 Derek J. Mondor, 32, formerly of Cavalier, ND, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2023 at his residence in Grafton, ND. A Vigil Service will be held on Friday, February 3, 2023, at 2:30 p.m. at the St. Brigid’s Catholic Church, in Cavalier, ND. Visitation at the church for one hour before the time of services.
Derek J. Mondor was born August 5, 1990 in Robbinsdale, MN to Kenneth and Jodie (Jerome) Mondor. In 1996, he moved with his family from Fridley, MN to Cavalier, ND. He attended school in Cavalier and later worked at Wieler Construction, Kelly Bean, with his brother at CM Construction Services, and then at Marvin Windows in Grafton, a job he enjoyed. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and he had an ability to make people laugh, especially his nieces and nephew, to whom he told many jokes. Derek was a very giving person and liked to help others out. Other things he enjoyed were playing pool and cards, the outdoors, camping, and singing especially to tunes on the radio. Survivors include his dad, Kenneth Mondor (Janet Johnson), Cavalier, ND, siblings: Dustin Mondor (Jayme), East Grand Forks, MN, Chad Mondor, Cavalier, Taylor Pearson-Mondor (David), Champlin, MN, stepsisters: Krista Johnson and Sarah Johnson, nieces and nephew: Zadie, Kinzie, Louke, Emma, Elowyn, and Bella, fiancé, Julie Peltier, and her family Brandon, Kailin, Summer, Ethan and granddaughter, Zyah, maternal grandparents, Lawrence and Rita Jerome. Also surviving are several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Preceding him in death are his mother, Jodie, paternal grandparents, George and Leona Mondor, sister, Korina Mondor, Uncle Doug Mondor, and nephew, Tyler Pickard.

 Gordon D. Askew, 89, of Cavalier, ND, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2023, at Essentia Hospital in Fargo, ND. A funeral service will be held Monday, January 30, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at United Lutheran Church in Cavalier. A visitation will be held Sunday, January 29, 2023, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Askew Funeral Home in Cavalier. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to United Lutheran Church, Faith in Action, or the Cavalier Ambulance Service.
Gordon Dale Askew was born January 11, 1934, to Leslie and Edna (Horsley) Askew at Neche, ND. He attended grade school at East Leroy and graduated from Cavalier High School, where he participated in football and track. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1954, serving two years. He was employed by Nodak Rural Electric for thirty-six years as a lineman and later became foreman for the Cavalier and Edinburg crews. Upon retiring from Nodak, he started a hobby of making projects out of stained glass which he especially enjoyed. He was very fond of his grandchildren and enjoyed attending their sporting events. Gordon liked to tease and had a quick wit. He was a member of the United Lutheran Church, where he formerly served on the church council. On September 6, 1959, Gordon and Norma Jean Claughton were married at Mountain, ND. He is survived by his wife, Norma Jean, son, Tom Askew (Kristy Voecks), grandchildren: Patrick (Sadie) Askew, Anthony (Alyssa) Askew, and Nicole Askew. Also survived by his great-grandchildren: Niam, Vaya, and Acen Askew, Parker and Eli Askew, sister, Grace Robbie. Preceding him in death were his parents, siblings: Melvin, Russell, and Adrian Askew, Doreen Bahr, and Ivadele Rogers.  Evelyn Peterson, age 91 of Grafton, North Dakota passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at the Altru Hospital of Grand Forks, North Dakota.
Evelyn Karlstad was born on October 9, 1931, in Falun Township, Roseau County, Minnesota, the daughter of the late Nem and Inga (Thorstenson) Karlstad. Along with her 12 siblings, she was raised on the Karlstad farm and attended District 112 School in Falun Township. Evelyn was united in marriage to Walter Lyle Peterson on November 8, 1952 in Roseau, Minnesota. Following Walter’s “Buddy’s” discharge from the Army, the couple moved to Grafton, which was their lifelong home. She worked at Borden’s in Grafton, in the potatoes, and cared for many children at her home daycare. After Walter passed away in 1988, she continued to live in their home until 2016, when health conditions required her to move to Lutheran Sunset Home in Grafton. She loved spending time with family and friends and always had coffee for anyone who would visit. She enjoyed caring for pets and her birds, collecting dolls and stuffed animals. She also enjoyed traveling with her daughter, Kathy, the Heritage Doll Club and her nieces. Evelyn is survived by her son, Kevin (Nada) Peterson, Oak Grove, MN; son-in-law, Jason Vasichek, Manvel, ND; grandchildren: Lindsey Peterson, Tucker Vasichek and Logan Peterson; brother-in-law, Kenny (Karen) Peterson, Ellsworth, WI; sister-in-law, Janet (Peterson) Dailey, Grand Forks, ND. Along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Walter, daughter Kathy, brothers: Alfred, Duane, Clarence, Clifford, Eddie, Marvin, Norman and Raymond (Mava) Karlstad, sisters: Agnes (Clifford) Williamson, Clara (Raymond) Thompson, Ida (George) Olson, Mamie (Herman) Johnson and brother-in-law Duane Peterson. She will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends. Funeral services will be Friday, February 24, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at Grafton City Cemetery in the spring.  Shawn Dale Jerome, 51, of Grand Forks, ND and formerly of Walhalla, ND passed away Sunday, January 22nd, peacefully surrounded by his loving family at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND.
Shawn was born on January 18th, 1972, to Robert and Gloria Jerome in Grafton, ND. He grew up in Walhalla. He attended Walhalla Public School and graduated in 1991. On December 17th, 1992, he married the love of his life, Darla and they built their life together with their three children in Walhalla. He worked as a maintenance mechanic for ADM as well as volunteering with the Walhalla Ambulance Service for twelve years. After the kids graduated, they moved to Grand Forks where he worked for IRET properties as the head of maintenance, and as a tattoo artist for 15-plus years. Shawn was a kind-hearted man, who enjoyed hunting, singing, drawing, and long rides through the hills. It was very evident that his grandchildren were his number one pride and joy although everyone knew it, he made sure most importantly, they knew it. It was true he and Darla would argue over who was the bigger baby hog (he was) and he loved cuddling up with a baby on his shoulder. His pride and joy were his grandchildren whom he loved wholeheartedly. He also stepped up as a godfather for several kids, all of whom he watched over with love and pride. He was sentimental and humble, welcoming people into his home and his heart with no boundaries. His laughter and warm nature will be missed among his family and many friends. He is survived by the love of his life of 32 years, Darla of Grand Forks, ND, children, Nikki (Eric) Burt of Cavalier, ND, Christopher (Emily) Storey of Langdon, ND, Brady (Jackie) Jerome of Grand Forks, ND, 10 beautiful grandchildren, Logan, Cameron, Ethan, Keira, Hazel, Eli, Kayanna, Branch (Patrick), Ellena, and Jadah, brothers, Clay (Michelle) Jerome of Salol, MN, Lance Jerome of Walhalla, ND, and Brad (Paula) Jerome of Bismarck, ND, brothers-in-law, James (Cathy) Jerome, Jonathan Toews, both of Walhalla, ND, and sisters-in-law, Sheila Forrey of Grand Forks, ND, Robyn Jerome of Walhalla, ND, and Robin Counts of New Town, ND; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and two honorary grandchildren, Braxlee and Andrew, that have been adopted into the family.  Leona L. Czapiewski, 94, Grand Forks, ND passed away Saturday, January 21, 2023, in 4000 Valley Square, Woodside Village in Grand Forks.
Leona Lucille Dauksavage was born September 26, 1928, to Alexander and Rose (Knapkiewicz) Dauksavage in Pulaski Township, Walsh County, ND. She was united in marriage to Florian F. Czapiewski on November 6, 1950, in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Warsaw, ND. They lived in Grand Forks. Leona was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will be remembered for sharing her God-given gift of hospitality by welcoming family and friends to her home and table. She found much pleasure in taking a genuine interest in everyone she knew. She was a volunteer, a servant leader, and selflessly gave with a humble heart. When her children were young, she was involved with youth groups and school organizations. She always found time to dedicate to serving others. She was a devoted member of St. Mary’s and loved the parish community. Throughout the years she was a CCD coordinator and teacher. Additionally, she was always active in the Altar Society and served on the wedding committee preparing receptions for many years. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Marquette #677 and was a Third Order Secular Franciscan. Those who volunteered with her cherished her warm personality and heart for serving. She was renowned for her cooking and baking skills. Friends and family knew when they walked in the door that Leona had something delicious cooking in the oven. When she wasn’t in the kitchen, she could be found crocheting or sewing on her rocking chair in the living room, happy to share stories about her life on the farm. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, taking pride in how big her tomatoes were each year or how her tulips and peonies filled up her flower beds with color. She was a woman of great faith, courage, and compassion. Leona is survived by a son, Robert Czapiewski; daughters, Suzanne (Joel) Flom and Karen (Kevin) Paschke; six grandchildren, Christopher (Missy), Matthew and Patrick Flom and Logan, Cody and Lauren Paschke; two great grandchildren; a brother, Eugene Dauksavage and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Rev. Jacob Czapiewski, her parents, her sister Rose Marie Schumacher, and her brother Ernest Dauksavage. Burial: In the spring, at Calvary North Cemetery, Grand Forks, ND.  Phylis Ann Gratton was born the first child to Dwayne and Annette (Roberge) Gratton on Mother’s Day, May 9, 1954, in Cavalier, ND
As a toddler of two, Phylis was put down for a nap while her mother was busy cooking in the kitchen when she toddled into the kitchen pulling the cord to an electric skillet with hot grease pouring it over her head. This traumatic injury plagued her throughout her whole life. She was a trooper and learned to walk and talk again, but her injuries manifested later in life. She graduated from Walhalla High School in 1973 and went on to receive her CNA working her first job at the nursing home in Langdon in 1974. That same year, she met and married William Thomasson in Olga, ND. To this union, two children were born, Sarah in 1976 and Michael in 1981. Phylis worked in the kitchen at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital for a time in the ‘80s. Later, she and Billy parted ways. Phylis lived alone in Cavalier until it was evident that she was unable to care for herself and became a resident of the Borg Pioneer Memorial Home in Mountain, ND where she resided until her death. Phylis’ faith and love for God was her treasure as she practiced it always in confidence knowing she belonged to Him. Her humor was as sharp and sweet as divinity! She will be missed. She was preceded in death by her parents Dwayne and Annette Gratton, maternal grandparents Ralph and Agnes (Gendreau) Roberge, paternal grandparents Harvey and Eugenia (Brusseau) Gratton, and great nephew Jakob Byron. Phylis is survived by her two children, Sarah Thomasson of Grand Forks, ND and Michael Thomasson of Cavalier, ND, brothers and sisters Roger Gratton, Drayton, ND, Evelyn McKay (Willie) Mountain, ND, Del Gratton (Candy) Grand Forks, ND, Sylvia Moore (Tim) Mountain, ND and Anita (Daniel) Fernandez, Dove Creek, Colorado as well as her loving Borg family, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation at the church for one hour before the time of services.  Alfred W. Lindell, age 94 of Fairdale, ND passed away on Monday, January 16, 2023 at First Care Heath Center of Park River.
Alfred Walter Lindell was born March 11, 1928 in Golden Township, Walsh County, North Dakota, the son of the late Peter Arthur and Anetta (Stenerson) Lindell. He grew up in Golden Township and graduated from the Walsh County Agricultural School in Park River. Alfred was united in marriage to Mary Ann Mielke on December 4, 1949 at Grafton Lutheran Church. The couple lived in Grafton for three years. In the fall of 1955 the couple purchased a farm between Adams and Fairdale. They moved to that farm in the spring of 1956 and have lived there since. He was a member of the Adams Mountain Lutheran Church and the Gideon Society. He enjoyed spending time with children and grandchildren. He enjoyed going to the lake in his later years with his family. He liked hunting and fishing. Alfred is survived by his children: Paige (James) Buckeye, Montpelier, ND; Tamara (John “Buzz”) Lunde, St. Thomas, ND; Suzanne (Garlen) Haroldson, Woodbury, MN; Grant (Sandra) Lindell, Adams, ND; Jana (Allan) Berube, Perham, MN; Tena (Glen) Scharmer, Grafton, ND; daughter-in-law, Nancy (Loren) Kadlec, Grand Forks, ND; 27 grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, brother George Lindell, Edinburg, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Mary Ann Lindell, son, A. Gray Lindell and great granddaughter, Elle Nicole Scott. Riske, age 75 of Forest River, ND passed away Wednesday, January 11, 2023 at the Lutheran Sunset Home of Grafton, surrounded by his loving family. Donnie was born on October 5, 1947 in Grafton, ND, the son of the late Hilary and Leona (Korynta) Riske.
Donnie graduated from Midway School in 1965, he joined the U.S. Army serving in the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1970 and worked for the BNSF RR Building and Bridges Department. He was united in marriage to Bonnie Wosick on June 30, 1978 in Ardoch, ND. He is a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Minto and the Forest River American Legion. Donnie enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and playing cards with his family. He enjoyed being outdoors, especially fishing with his buddies: George, Gary, Jack and Cokey. He started his day with having coffee at the café with his friends and cousin Jim. Donnie is survived by his wife, Bonnie Riske, Forest River, ND; sons: Michael (Carrie) Riske, Grand Forks, ND; Luke Riske, Grand Forks, ND; three grandchildren: Jersey Riske, Jack Riske, Ian Riske; siblings: Patty (David) Willson, East Grand Forks, MN; Mary Ann Bayne, Belpre, OH; Kathy (Rodger) Common, Mesa, AZ; Butch (Julie) Riske, Grand Forks, ND; Chris (Vernon) Langowski, Grand Forks, ND; sister-in-law, Merrie Dunlop; siblings-in-law: Wayne Olson, Williams, MN; Gail Babinski, Grand Forks, ND; Ed Olson, Drayton, ND; Shelly (Don) Reynolds, Edmore, ND and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
Anne was born on July 23, 1934, in Winkler, MB, the daughter of John and Katherine (Harder) Dyck. She was raised and attended school in Ontario. Anne married Lee E. Hartje in Hallock, MN on May 30, 1953. After their marriage, they lived in Cavalier until 2000 when they moved to Hamilton, ND and for the last two years Anne resided at Wedgewood Manor in Cavalier. Anne worked various jobs in her life including working in restaurants, the East Grand Forks School lunch program, and working with disabled individuals for 13 years in Grand Forks, ND, retiring in 1999. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the LWML at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Cavalier. She also enjoyed crocheting, knitting, quilting and baking in her spare time. Anne is survived by her daughters, Ruth (Lee) Russell, Vacaville, CA and Deb Hartje, Grand Forks, ND; sons, Mike (Tammie) Hartje, Cresswell, OR and Rick (Brenda) Hartje, Grand Forks, ND; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Morton and brother Alvin Dyck. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lee; children, Gail Dobson, Lorraine Hartje, and Steve Hartje. |
