LaVerna H. Knuth, 95, formerly of Cavalier, passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at Valley Senior Living on Columbia in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Tim J. Samuelson, age 64 of Langdon, ND passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at Altru Hospital of Grand Forks. Timothy Jay Samuelson was born on January 13, 1960 in Grafton, ND to the late Loren and Joanne (Sukstrof) Samuelson. Tim was raised on the family farm in rural Adams, ND. He attended school in Adams and graduated from Adams High School. After graduation, he attended AVTI in East Grand Forks, MN. He began working on oil rigs in Western North Dakota, which took him to Greenland and Alaska. In 2020, Tim retired due to his health. On July 25, 1998 he married Cindy Keney and they made their home in Hamiliton, ND. They also lived in Roseau, MN before settling in Langdon, ND. Tim cherished his family and friends. He enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren’s sporting events and activities. He loved camping, hunting, and fishing, especially on Stump Lake and at Lake of the Woods. Tim had a kind heart and a beautiful smile. Tim will be missed by his wife, Cindy Samuelson, Langdon, ND; his son: Tanner (Mandi) Samuelson, Hallock, MN step-children: Joshua (Jessica) Kirchoffner, Manning, ND, and Jamie (Steven) Olson, Langdon, ND; grandchildren: Wyatt, Evie, Luella, and Oliver Samuelson, Logan Kirchoffner, Lexie Olson, Brenna Kirchoffner, Karli Wensloff, Isabella Olson, and; siblings: Lori Bender, Dickinson, ND, Kristi (Curt) Samuelson, Grand Forks, ND, and Kari (Victor) Samuelson, Adams, ND; nieces and nephews: Mallory (Ryan) Lene, Kyle Frier, Jayse Bender, Shae (Justin) Carlson, Amanda (Zach) Lake, and Nikki Graves. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother, Chad. Funeral Services will be on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at Adams Mountain Lutheran Church of Adams, ND. Gendron, 95, of Walhalla, North Dakota, passed away Monday, July 29, 2024 at the Pembilier Nursing Center in Walhalla, ND. A memorial service will be on Saturday, August 3. 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Walhalla Lutheran Church in Walhalla, ND. Visitation at the church for one hour before the time of services. Doris L. Cook, 92, of Neche, ND, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2024, at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier, ND. Memorial service will be held Friday, August 2, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Trinity Methodist Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held for one hour before the time of the service at the church. Doris L. Taylor was born March 2, 1932, at Neche, ND, to John and Rose Mae (Vosper) Taylor. She grew up in the Neche area and graduated from Neche High School. On August 20, 1950, Doris married L.W. “John” Cook at the Neche United Methodist Church. To this union, one son was born, D. Paul Cook on August 4, 1952. Doris worked at Citizens State Bank in Neche retiring in 1999. Doris was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed bird watching. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; son, Paul; and several siblings. Marlin John “Spike” Lothspeich, age 92 of Park River, North Dakota passed away Saturday, July 27, 2024 at First Care Health Center of Park River. Marlin John Lothspeich was born July 24, 1932 in Wales, North Dakota, the son of the late Edward and Rose (Dirkes) Lothspeich. He attended and graduated from Wales High School. Marlin was drafted into the U.S. Air Force, serving as a medic during the Korean Conflict. He returned home after his honorable discharge. Marlin was united in marriage to Patricia Lindsay on June 18, 1956 in Langdon, North Dakota. The couple made their home in Park River where they raised their four daughters. Education was important to Spike and he was proud that all his daughters completed their college educations. Spike worked a majority of his career in the agricultural industry, later becoming the manager/owner/operator of Valley Sprayers, a crop-spraying business in Park River. During this time he formed many lasting relationships with area farmers and people in the surrounding communities. His beloved wife, Pat, passed away June 5, 2004. Spike was her main caregiver during her battle with cancer and did so selflessly. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Paul Farup American Legion Post #147 where he served as Commander from 1978 to 1979. Spike was also one of the longest standing members of the Park River Volunteer Fire Department. Spike was a gardener at heart. It fed his soul and he gladly shared his vegetables, gladiolas and vast knowledge with others. He also spent many hours fishing both locally and in Canada and knew all the best places to wet a line. He also wasn’t one to stay idle. Whether it was the next field to check, season to hunt, or card game at the bakery; Spike was always thinking of what was next. Marlin is survived by his daughters: Cheri Lothspeich, Park River, ND; Lori Kalgard, Fargo, ND; Jodi (Robert) Onstad, Denver, CO; Kari (Brad) Novak, West Fargo, ND; his grandchildren: Kory Kalgard, Lindsay Jelinek, Kiley Dusek, Laken Novak, Jaden Novak and Morgen Novak; seven great grandchildren and sister, Ann (Larry) Hagen, Bismarck, ND. He was preceded in death by his wife Pat, his parents and eight brothers. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Park River. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00-7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Tollefson Funeral Home of Park River. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday for one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Park River. Military Rites will be provided by Paul Farup American Legion Post #147 and the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard. Houston, 72, of Bathgate, ND, passed away Friday, July 26, 2024, at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier, ND. Memorial service will be held Thursday, August 1, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at the Bathgate Presbyterian Church, Bathgate, ND. Visitation will be held from noon until the time of the service at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Cavalier Ambulance Service or a charity of your choice. Leslie Duane Houston was born November 14, 1951, in Grafton, ND, to Vernon “Dick” and Marguerite “Marge” (Gladue) Houston. He grew up the Bathgate area and graduated from Neche High School in 1969. He attended Bottineau State School of Forestry from 1969-70. On December 7, 1970, Leslie enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served as an Electrical Intelligence Air Crew Member, flying over 100 missions and close to 2000 flight hours. After his discharge from the Air Force, he joined his father and brother in the construction business. On September 6, 1980, Leslie married Delores Unke at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, rural St. Thomas, ND. Leslie joined the North Dakota Army National Guard in 1980, where he served for 16 years in the Cavalier unit. He was a platoon sergeant during Desert Storm and retired with 20 years of total military service in 1996. Leslie was the mayor of Bathgate for some time and was instrumental in obtaining the lots and starting the city park. He often commented on how nice the park is now and about the people that made it what it is today. He was also proud to help the city purchase their firetruck. Leslie also worked at Motorcoach Industries in Pembina, ND, for over 22 years, retiring in 2014. Leslie was a lifelong New York Yankees fan, and also enjoyed carpentry, hunting, fishing, and archery. He was especially proud of his once in a lifetime moose hunting experience. He is survived by his wife, Delores; daughter, Stefanie Lyn (Ryan) Klapperich, Grand Forks, ND; son, Steven Houston, Bathgate, ND; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Rick Houston. Rosalie A. Kalal, 87, of Grand Forks, ND passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at Valley Senior Living on Columbia, Grand Forks, ND.

Mary Ann (Darling) Ryan, 95, of Inkster, ND, passed away peacefully at home on the family farm surrounded by the love of her family. Born on July 12th, 1929 in Inkster to Nora (Hunking) Darling and Oscar Darling, Mary Ann was raised and educated in Strathcona, MN. She met the love of her life, Con Ryan, and they married on January 11th, 1947. Together, they moved their home from Inkster to their new farmstead west of town where they raised their eight children and ran a Grade A dairy. Mary Ann’s heart for service led her to caring for children at the Grafton State School, serving as the President of the Altar Society at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Conway, and as President of the Inkster Homemakers for many years. Countless meals and memories were shared around her table, as everyone gathered to enjoy her delicious cooking and warm hospitality. For over 30 years, Mary Ann and Con were loyal UND basketball fans, as well as enjoying football and hockey. They loved to dance, attend their grandchildren’s activities, and host family and friends at the farm. We rejoice that they are together again, dancing and celebrating in heaven. The family would like to thank their brother Dean for his wonderful, dedicated care and love of mom and the farm for so many years. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Con, their infant son Jack, and daughter Colleen. She is survived by her children Patty (Kregg) Foltz, Theresa (Wayne) Devine, Mike (Ann) Ryan, Merry Lynn Ohlheiser and partner Dave Wacker, Jay (Joy) Ryan, Dean Ryan, and Shanna (Matt) Foerster, as well as 22 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren. David A. Roy, 56, of Langdon, ND, passed away July 10, 2024, after an almost two-year courageous battle with glioblastoma brain cancer, surrounded by family at Langdon Prairie Health. David Alan Roy was born on September 17, 1967, in Cavalier, ND, to William and Kathleen (Carlson) Roy. He grew up in the Langdon area and attended Langdon Area Schools. On September 24, 1988, he married the love of his life, Stacey (Gjesdal) Roy. They made their home in Langdon, where they raised their three children. In 1989, David and his father, Bill, purchased Christie Motors where he worked as owner and operator until the time of his death. David enjoyed many hobbies such as dirt track racing where he had many loyal fans, hunting, grilling, and especially fishing with his family and friends. David also spent many hours working on the family farm in Fairdale and attending numerous sporting activities with his kids. For the last almost five years of David’s life, he wore the title of Papa Dave proudly. Nothing put a smile on his face faster than spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving David are his wife, Stacey, of Langdon; children: Jace (Lindsey) Roy, Nicholas (Kami Kay) Roy, and Matthew (Reanna) Roy – all of Langdon; grandchildren: Kynlee (4), Brooks (1.5), and Sonny (10 months); father William Roy of Langdon; siblings: Kevin (Lori) Roy, Lori (Chalmer) Dettler, and Billy Roy Jr. – all of Langdon; father-in-law Orris Gjesdal; sisters-in-law: Tamera Gjesdal (Shawn O’Brien), Kerna Gjesdal (Brian Wirth), Sherri (Mark) Romfo, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Breah Roy; mother Kathy Roy; mother-in-law Karen Haraseth; and mother-in-law Lorretta Gjesdal. A memorial service will be held on July 16, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at the United Lutheran Church in Langdon, ND. Visitation will be held one hour before the time of service. David will be missed by all who had known him. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Cavalier County Cancer Crusaders or Langdon Prairie Health. Katherine S. Daniels (“Kathy”), age 83, passed away peacefully in Florida with family by her side on July 7, 2024. Kathy was born on October 19, 1940 to Herman and Louise Daniels in Grafton, North Dakota. She graduated from St. Thomas High School in 1958 and the College of St. Catherine in 1962. Kathy grew up on her family’s farm, where she helped and learned the business of farming from an early age. Even in retirement from Florida, Kathy was keenly aware of farming conditions in the northern Red River Valley, maintaining lifetime friends and business contacts in the area. Kathy began her career in education as a home economics instructor, primarily in Minnesota and then briefly in Indiana and Illinois. Following her father’s first heart attack in 1975, Kathy moved her family to St. Thomas to help maintain her family’s farming operations. After her father passed away from a second heart attack, Kathy managed the farm, worked as a substitute teacher and raised her two children, Krista and Erik. When her children attended college and began their adult lives, Kathy transitioned to KXPO in Grafton, where she managed the radio station for many years and even appeared on the air. After Kathy’s first two grandchildren were born, Kathy lived in Fargo for several years to be closer to them. In Fargo, Kathy managed volunteers at MeritCare hospital. The work location was significant because when it was formerly known as St. Luke’s Hospital, it was the same location where her father had passed away many years earlier. After her youngest two grandchildren were born, Kathy moved to The Villages, Florida to be closer to them. She enjoyed performing with Off Broadway Players, playing card games and working as a volunteer for hospice thrift stores. Kathy was a lifelong patriot and member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Before moving to Florida, she held three statewide offices for the Department of North Dakota: Treasurer, Secretary and then finally, President. Kathy was predeceased by her father, Herman Daniels, her mother, Louise (Nelson) Daniels, her daughter, Krista Daniels and her brother, Louis Daniels. She is survived by her son, Erik Johnson, her daughter-in-law Cynthia Johnson, five grandchildren, Chance Beranek, Shane Beranek, Ryan Beemer, Noah Johnson and Alexa Johnson, and two great-grandchildren, Penny Beemer and Elowen Beemer. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Grafton, ND. Interment will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery of St. Thomas, ND. |
