 Anton L. “Tony” Korb, 56, of Cando, ND, passed away on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at The Towner County Medical Center in Cando. Honorary bearers will be Braxten Korb, Dakota Vetter, Brett Dilley Jr., and Nathan Conley.
A private family service will be held at a later date. Anton L. Korb was born February 12, 1966 in Cando, ND to Roger and Patricia (Baerwald) Korb. He attended school and graduated from Cando High School in 1984. After high school he worked as a supervisor at Noodles by Leonardo in the Press & Dryer department until 2019 when he left due to health reasons. Anton married Francine Dilley on February 9, 2021 in Cando, ND. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, carpentry and cooking. Anton is survived by his wife Francine of Cando; children Chris (Rachel) Houle of Egeland, ND, Kimberly Korb of Cando, ND, Steven Korb of Cando, ND and Kevin Korb (Heidi) of Cando, ND; step-children Shauna (Jeremy) Olson of Cando, ND, Brett (Cassie) Dilley of Cando, ND, Codi Vetter of Cando, ND and Kelsi Vetter of Deerwood, MN; brothers and sisters William Korb of Cando, ND, Marie Moen of Devils Lake, ND, Mike Korb of Rugby, ND, Sheri Korb of Antler, ND and Derrick Korb of Rock Lake, ND; and many grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Anton was preceded in death by his parents Roger and Patricia Korb.

 Hazel V. Bartron, 87, of Cavalier, ND, passed away Saturday, June 25, 2022, at her home in Cavalier. Funeral service will be held Friday, July 1, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at the Grafton Assembly of God Church, Grafton, ND. Visitation will be held Thursday, June 30, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the Askew Funeral Home in Cavalier.
Hazel was born August 13, 1934, in Grafton, ND, to Clarence and Ila (Rutherford) Evanson in Grafton, ND. She grew up on a farm near Drayton, ND and graduated from Drayton High School. She then attended Mayville State University and received her teaching degree. Her first teaching job was in the Neche, ND, area where she met the love of her life Kenneth Bartron. They were married on September 6, 1956, in Grafton, North Dakota. After their marriage she worked as a nurse’s aide at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital in Cavalier and as a medicine aide at the Pioneer Rest Home in Bathgate. Hazel enjoyed camping, bonfires, sewing, quilting, and making tie blankets. She loved spending time with her family especially with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly. She was a member of the Fargo and Moorhead Eastern Star, Gainer-McAndrews American Legion Auxiliary, and the Trinity United Methodist Church in Cavalier. She is survived by her children: Janis (Duane) Wileman, Neche, ND; Nancy (Robert) Maxwell, Hamilton, ND; and Lori Tozer, Grand Forks, ND; son-in-law, John Tozer, Cavalier, ND; grandchildren: Jesse Wileman, Laura (Kevin) Ault, Heather (Adam) Halvorson, Andrea (Matt) Daddino; Andrew Maxwell, Sarah (Brian) Fish, Brandi Veer (Andrew Anderson), Jennifer Maxwell (Chance Hartz); Ashley Tozer (Johnnie Simmons), Heidi (Kollin) Mundis, Morgan Tozer (D’Von Vanderbilt), Jay Tozer; great-grandchildren: Jade, Jordyn, Abby, Johnny, Aiden, Caleb, Joshua, Rylie, Norah, Mylo, Owen, Sawyer, Jeffrey, Emery, Izabella, Tyree, Zendaya, and Xyair; sister, Inez (Carl) Kujath; sister-in-law, Dorothy Evanson; and brother-in-law, Wesley (Harryette) Bartron. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Kenneth; son, Jay; parents; infant twin brothers; and brothers, Dennis and Erlan.  Christine Hughes, 93, of Cavalier (and lately of Scottsdale, AZ) passed away on June 25, 2022 at the Belmont Village Senior Living home with her daughter Cathy by her side.
Christine Bjornson was born on July 18, 1928, in Cavalier to Matthias and Gwen (Dinusson) Bjornson. She graduated from Cavalier High School in 1946 and attended the University of North Dakota, where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education. She also earned a Master’s degree in Music Education in 1969. Christine was very proud of her Icelandic heritage and composed choral music to Icelandic poetry as her thesis project. Christine taught music in Lancaster, MN and Manvel, ND before marrying Kenneth Hughes in 1952. They lived in Ishpeming, MI, where their children Matt (1955) and Cathy (1957) were born. In 1961 Christine and her children moved to Hillsboro, ND, where she taught music and 5 th grade for 5 years. In 1966 the vocal music position at Cavalier School opened, and she taught music in all grades until her retirement in 1988. After her retirement she taught private voice and piano for 10 more years. She touched countless lives in those years and was immensely proud of her students’ success. Christine was a member of United Lutheran Church, where she directed the choir and played the organ and piano. One of her great joys in school and church was playing to accompany group singing. She also served as music director/pianist for several Cavalier Community Theater productions and was the first director of the Cavalier Camerata Choir, which produced concerts of The Messiah and the 7 Last Words of Christ. Christine volunteered on the Cavalier Library Board and the Pembina County Historical Society. She was an accomplished seamstress and crafter and belonged to the quilting group at her church. After retirement Christine enjoyed travels to Iceland, Norway, Great Britain, Alaska, and around the United States. One of her greatest joys was visiting with family and friends over meals and coffee. Christine is survived by her children Matt Hughes, Fargo; and Cathy Hauan (Jim), Scottsdale, AZ; 1 grandson, Andrew, Los Angeles, 2 beloved sisters-in-law, June Bjornson and Gertrude Bjornson of Cavalier, brother-in-law Myron Bill, Escondido, CA, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Deane and Robert Bjornson, and sister Pauline Bill. A memorial service will be held at United Lutheran Church in Cavalier on July 18 at 1:00 p.m.  Doreen Guilbert Hendrickson, 86, of Cando, ND, passed away on Friday, June 24, 2022 at the Towner County Medical Center in Cando.

Box 903, Cando, ND 58324; or the Cando Senior Citizens, P.O. Box 64, Cando, ND 58324. Doreen was born May 3, 1936 to Louis and Margaret (Capon) Guilbert near Hansboro, ND. Doreen was raised in St. John, ND and graduated from St. John High School. She married William Hendrickson on January 19, 1956 in Monrovia, CA. They began their married life in Bisbee, ND and soon moved to Cando, ND where they raised their family In the early seventies they purchased farm land in Manitoba, Canada. Until the kids had all graduated from high school, they were long distance farmers. They then made the move to the Belmont, Manitoba area. She continued to manage the farm land until her death. Doreen was up for a game of cards at any time or any game for that matter. She was very proud of her garden and flowers and her efforts proved to be very successful. G’ma H was very happy to spend time with her grandchildren and they in turn loved going to “Camp Grandma”! Doreen is survived by her children Cyndi (James) Bennington of Churchs Ferry, ND and Wade Hendrickson of Cando; grandchildren Riley (Valerie) Bertsch, Laine Gordon, Lacie (Casey) Hansen, Kendal Hendrickson, Cordell (Katie) Hendrickson, Lindsey (Troy) Sigvaldason and Mandy Hendrickson and nine great grandchildren. Doreen was preceded in death by her parents, husband William, son Brian, brothers Derald and Danny Guilbert, daughter-in-law Paula Hendrickson and granddaughter Halie Hendrickson.  Brittany Kay Rasmussen, 27, of Grafton, ND, formerly of Thief River Falls, MN, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, June 20, 2022 in Thief River Falls.
Private Funeral Services will be held at 5:00 PM on Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN, with Father Rick Lambert presiding. Private burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Middle River, MN. Brittany Kay Rasmussen was born on July 16, 1994 in Grand Forks, ND, the daughter of Gary Lee and Stephanie Rasmussen. She attended school in Newfolden, MN, graduating in 2012. Following high school Brittany attended Northland Community and Technical College in Thief River Falls, for Auto Mechanics. The love of her life were her three children – Myriella, Lucious, and Loki who she loved with all her heart and spent as much time as she could with them. She enjoyed camping, fishing, cooking, and spending time with family and friends. Brittany could light up a room with her infectious smile and laugh. She was very adventurous, courageous, independent, and carefree. Brittany had a loving spirit, helping anyone in need. She was very talented and loved to draw, bringing her artistic value into tattooing. Brittany is survived by her children, Myriella, Lucious, and Loki; parents, Gary (Tammy) Lee of Grafton, ND, and Stephanie Rasmussen of Crookston, MN; siblings, Daniele Rasmussen of Crookston, MN, Jade Block of Pengilly, MN, Jordan Rudnik of Grand Forks, ND, Jonathan Rudnik of Neche, ND, Jackson Rudnik of Duluth, MN, and Jayden Lee of Grafton, ND; grandparents, Elmer (Fudd) and Dolly Rasmussen of Middle River, MN, and Lester and Patricia Lee of Grafton, ND; special motherly friend, Theresa Gaffaney of Thief River Falls, MN; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives, and friends. Karas, 98, of Pembina, ND passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 19, 2022 at Altru Hospital, in Grand Forks, ND. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 22nd from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Askew Funeral Home in Cavalier, ND. A chapel service with military rites will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan, ND on Thursday, June 23, 2022 at 2:00 p.m.
James was born August 24, 1923 at Bend, Oregon to Gust and Louisa (Walchli) Karas. He grew up in Pocatello, ID and graduated from Pocatello High School. Jim served in the US Army and was a World War II veteran. On July 23, 1945, he married the love of his life Esther Erickson. In 1946, they moved to Pembina, ND. He worked for the US Customs Service for 38 years, retiring as the Area Port Director. Jim was an active American Legion member of 81 years. Survivors include his children, Steven Karas, Wolfforth, TX, and Elizabeth Karas, Pembina, ND, sisters, Christina Stone, Boise, ID and Viola Jepson, Abilene, TX, sister-in-law, Bertha Karas, Camarillo, CA, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, Esther, brothers: George, Peter, and Leo Karas, and sister, Judy Siebert.  Raymond Lyle Van Camp, 92, of Drayton passed away at Altru Hospital on Friday, June 17, 2022. Raymond was born September 27, 1929 to Alton and Gladys (Jamieson) Van Camp, in rural Drayton, North Dakota.
Raymond grew up there and graduated from Drayton Public School in 1947. While attending high school he met Roberta Rae Newans. They were married in Moorhead, MN on October 13, 1947. They had four children, Mary Kathryn (Art) Reed of Carpinteria, CA, Michael Raymond (Rae Anne) of Grand Forks, ND, John Wesley (Patti) of Bemidji, MN, and Lyle Thomas (Lesa) of Drayton, ND. Raymond was a farmer and carpenter, and a lifelong member of the Drayton United Methodist Church where he served on the church board for many years. He also served on the Drayton Township Board, the Drayton Volunteer Ambulance Board, the Drayton Cemetery Association Board. He enjoyed gardening, mowing lawns, working on various projects in his garage, around the house, and around the farm, and also enjoyed being surrounded by his family. Raymond was an instrumental part of the founding of Valley News & Views. He served as the volunteer janitor and helped label many newspapers to be mailed over the decades. Raymond is survived by their four children, 11 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Roberta, sister Reva, brothers Lorne and Carl, and grandson Jeff Steenerson. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, June 23, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. in Drayton United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Drayton City Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Drayton Volunteer Ambulance Service or the Drayton Cemetery Association.  Terrence (Terry) Lee Carson, the first born child of William R. and Joyce, was born in May of 1953.
Terry first attended ‘country school’ in Loam Township, south of Vang, ND. Later, he attended ‘town school’ , graduating from Walhalla High School in 1971. Terry attended ND School of Science in Wahpeton and received an architectural drafting degree. He began his career life at a lumber yard in Park Rapids, MN, then at Grafton, ND. He moved to Walhalla in 1976 to manage the Robertson Lumber Company until it closed, then transferred to the lumber yard in Cavalier. Terry had a career change in 1987 when he became a carpenter/maintenance engineer at the Concrete PAR site, retiring after 28+ years. Terry always enjoyed being outdoors, especially at the Carson Family farm, with many ‘snowsheen’ and ATV runs thru the hills and coulee. He liked taking motorcycle rides to visit family, too. Terry was an avid hunter-deer, elk, turkey-and even squirrels, with his best buddy, Wrigley. He was always tinkering on things, from pickups to restoring vintage snowmobiles-for which he received ‘best of show’ awards. Woodworking projects also kept him busy, from little things like ‘shelf clutter’ to transforming a grain bin into a cabin. Terry married Violet in September of 1973 and they had two children, Amanda and Thomas. Terry married Ann in July of 2001. Terry is survived by his wife, Ann; mother, Joyce; children, Amanda (Kevin) and Thomas (Katherine); ‘bonus daughters’ Suzanne (Tom) and Nadine (Jonathan); grandchildren, Grace, William, Matthew, Andrew; ‘bonus grands and greats’, Shelby (Charlie),Ethan, Hayden, Brynn, Anne and Parker; siblings, Rhonda (Dean), Cheryl (Rodger), Carla (Brian), Jeff (Jana); best friend, Wrigley; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Preceding him in death was his father, William R. and grandparents, William C., Henrietta, Otenius and Sarah. Terrence L. Carson, 69, went to be with the Lord Friday, June 17, 2022 after a month long struggle with cancer at Essentia Health in Fargo. Terry wished to be cremated, with his ashes placed in a Ski-doo engine urn, placed at the family farm. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 24, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Walhalla Lutheran Church, Walhalla, ND,  Cheryl Ann Wherley, 56, died Tuesday, June 7, 2022, at her home in Cavalier with family. Memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at the Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held for one hour before the time of the service.
Cheryl was born June 6, 1966, in Williston, ND, to Niel and Elizabeth (Hopkins) Wherley, where she grew up. Cheryl worked as a CNA for many years, her kind heart and love for helping others made it a rewarding career for her. She had a contagious laugh that always brought a smile to anyone’s face that was with her. She was a free spirit and loved anything that involved adventure, her most favorite was skydiving. She also enjoyed camping, 4-wheeling, riding her bike and playing Bingo. On her days off she would relax to a good Lifetime movie or kick back with her favorite tv show Supernatural. She loved to shop, especially for purses and shoes. Boxes were always coming in the mail to greet her. She had a great love for animals; her dogs Storm and Buster would always be by her side. She adored her grandchildren and spent every moment she could with them. Cheryl is survived by her companion of 20 years, Stuart Gieger; four children: McCody Myhre, Corey Strauss (Christina Novak), Colby Strauss, and Cole Strauss; sisters: Donner Closser, Rose Wherley, Karen Hieb, and brother, Neil Wherley; three grandchildren: Samara, Asher, and Luka, along with several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her mother, Elizabeth Hopkins Wherley; her dad, Neil Wherley; stepfather, Jerry Hendrickson; aunt, Dolly Hopkins and uncle, Dru Hopkins; niece, Lauren Helt and her beloved dog, Stormy.  Daniel S. Sevigny, 97, of Grafton, ND and formerly Oakwood, ND passed away on June 6, 2022 at the Lutheran Sunset Home.
Daniel was born April 1, 1925 in Oakwood, ND on the family farm, the son of the late Edward and Emma (Demers) Sevigny. He attended and graduated from St. Aloysius Academy in Oakwood. Daniel served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953. Daniel married Louise Osowski on April 7, 1953 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Warsaw, ND. They settled near Oakwood where Daniel farmed and worked for area farmers. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Oakwood, the Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion. In 2018, Daniel and Louise moved to Lutheran Sunset Home in Grafton, where they enjoyed living with friends. He is survived by his wife, Louise and son Alan, Minto, ND; sister: Flora Pilon, Grafton, ND, and sister-in-law: Joanne Sevigny; many nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter Phyllis Marie, sisters: Rosalie Lessard and Alma Collette, and brothers: Victorian, Eugene and Orell. Due to Daniel’s generous gift of body donation to the University of North Dakota Medical School, Mass of Christian Burial will be at a later date, with inurnment at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Oakwood, ND. |
