 Valerian F. Schanilec, age 93 of Grafton, ND, passed away on Thursday, November 12, 2020 at his home.
Valerian Schanilec was born April 19, 1927 on the family farm near Veseleyville, ND, the son of the late Anton and Elizabeth (Dusek) Schanilec. He attended country school near there. Following his education, he began farming. He was drafted into the US Army and served from 1951-1953, stationed at Osaka Hospital in Japan. Upon his discharge, he returned home to continue farming. He moved into Grafton in 1969. He was united marriage to Elaine Ganyo on June 6, 1980 in Grafton, ND. The couple made their home in Grafton following their marriage. He retired from farming in 1989 and continued to live at their home in Grafton. He was a former member of the St. Luke’s Catholic Church of Veseleyville and currently a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Grafton. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, a 57 year member of the VFW and a 59 year member of the American Legion. He enjoyed gardening, casino trips and farming. Val is survived by his wife Elaine and son Anthony, both of Grafton, as well as sisters Frances Kiedrowski, Minneapolis, MN and Alexia (Leo) Klava, Walker, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers-in-law: James Kiedrowski, James Ganyo, Richard Ganyo, and Jerome Ganyo; and sister-in-law Lois Ann Melland. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, April 30, 2021 at 10:30 A.M. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Grafton, ND. Visitation will be Friday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at St. John's Catholic Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the Grafton American Legion and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard. The family would prefer that those attending please wear face masks.

P.O. Box 104, Cando, ND 58324. Babe Eleonore Jolliffe was born March 9, 1933 to Lee and Edna (Baarstad) in Rolla, North Dakota. She graduated from Bisbee High School with the class of 1951. On June 3, 1951 she was united in marriage to Dick Benson in the Mylo Lutheran Church. They made their home in the rural Wolford area on a farm and to this union four children were born; Carla, Rick, Randy, and Dean. Babe was board secretary and business manager for Wolford School district for 27 years as she helped on the farm and raised their family. She enjoyed spending summers at her lake cabin on Belcourt Lake where her family would visit and enjoy pontoon rides, water skiing and fishing. She was an active member of the Mylo Lutheran Church and spent many hours quilting with the ladies’ group which continued on for many years after the church closed. She then became a member of the Wolford Lutheran Church. For over fifteen years Babe chaired the Ice Cream Parlor during the Annual Antique Show at the Dale & Martha Hawk Museum. Bowling was her passion; she bowled regularly in Rolla and later Cando. She, at times, bowled three times a week in mixed, coffee cup, and women’s leagues. In 2013 she participated in the North Dakota State Woman’s Senior Bowling Tournament which awarded her a trip in 2014 to the National Woman’s Senior Bowling Tournament in Reno, Nevada. For this special event she was presented a vest to wear with “North Dakota Babe” embroidered, which earned her a new nickname among her fellow bowlers. Babe had many blue heeler dogs over the years and leaves behind her red heeler, Rusty. She has been a resident of the Towner County Living Center since April of 2019. Babe is survived by Dick, her husband of nearly 70 years, sons Rick of Wolford, Randy (Kathryn) of Bisbee, Dean (Klang) of Wolford; son-in-law Don Lee of Minot ND; grandchildren Rebecca (Tracy Tarr) Lee and Emily Lee of Minneapolis, MN; Jarrin Benson with great-granddaughter Lennon of Portland OR; and Sara (Kyle) McClammer with great-grand sons Maxwell and George of Indianapolis, IN; sisters Peggy (Dell) Melton/Jaha and Bonnie Bertsch both of Boise ID and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter Carla Lee, daughter-in-law Lavonna; brothers Neil and Jim Jolliffe; sister Terry Stegrey and grandson Jay Essen. Babe will be remembered for her laugh and generosity and will missed by everyone who knew her.  Carol Monson, 83, of Park River, formerly of Fairdale, ND passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on April 24th, 2021.
Carol was born on June 3, 1937 in Boulder Junction, WI, daughter of the late Milton and Margaret Tice. She grew up with four brothers, and attended high school in Presque Isle, WI. She moved to California after high school and married Leroy Monson on April 5th, 1958. They moved to Fairdale, ND and started farming in the spring of 1960 in the surrounding Fairdale area. She worked as a bookkeeper at the Fairdale Farmers Union Oil Station and Fairdale International Harvest. She was a waitress at the Stables Supper Club and also the Fairdale Café. She was a census taker and very active working on the farm. Carol was a very talented and artistic person with painting, ceramics, hardanger embroidery, quilting, knitting, sewing, and making jewelry. She was a great baker, cook, gardener, and enjoyed working her beautiful flower gardens. She was a member of the Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Fairdale, Alter Guild, Fairdale School Board, St. Olaf Church, Ladies Aid Treasurer, Church council, Community club secretary/treasurer, Sunday school teacher, and Upper Valley Riding Club Secretary. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Leroy of 60 years, and brothers Allen and Gene Tice. She was very proud of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is survived by her 3 children and spouses: Teresa (Doug) Pipal of Buffalo, MN, Karen (Charlie) Chyle of Lankin, ND, Jeff (Kim) Monson of Northwood, ND. Seven grandchildren: Travis Goodrie of Fargo, ND, Ryan Goodrie of Grand Forks, ND, Alyssa (Brian) Dietrich of Lankin, ND, Adam and Adison Pipal of Buffalo, MN, Ben and Grace Monson of Northwood, ND. Three great children: Morgan, Mason, and Gyda Dietrich of Lankin, ND. Two Brothers: Mike Tice of Marenisco, MI and David Tice of Two Rivers, WI. Plus many nieces and nephews. Masks are required for those attending the service.  Robert L. Dearinger, 77, of Walhalla, ND, passed away Friday, April 23, 2021 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks of complications from heart surgery. Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, April 28, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at the Walhalla Lutheran Church, Walhalla, ND. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Walhalla Ambulance Service or Faith in Action.
Robert was born to Oscar and Carolina (Thomasson) Dearinger on January 14, 1944. He was the sixth out of ten children. On March 22, 1966, Robert married his beautiful bride, Linda Pitcher. They made their home in Walhalla, ND. He worked for area farmers until he started his own salvage yard. He will be remembered for his generosity and his honesty. He had a huge heart for children and being a foster parent for 25 years. He and Linda were foster parents of the year in 2002. Robert could always be found at an auction sale, making friends wherever he went. He was always joking around. We are so grateful God gave us this wonderful man, that he is no longer in pain and that he’s with his momma. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Linda; children: Daniel (Terise) Dearinger, of Cummings; Jennifer (Tim) Danielson, of New Salem; Krisite (Trevor) Baumer, James Dearinger, Randy (Ashley) Dearinger, all of Grand Forks; Alex Dearinger, Walhalla; Summer (Perrin) Goetzfridt of New Salem; and Kim Dearinger, of Grafton; grandchildren: Christopher, Tovah, Isaac, Sistene, Ean, Shea, Johnathan, Tyrion, and Abel; brother, Gary (Patty) Dearinger; sisters: Eileen Ducioame, Dorothy Denault, Leona (Ron) Fuller, and Margie (Billie) LeTexier; brother-in-law, Wally Melsted; and sisters-in-law, Susie and Doris; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alvin and Elmer; sisters, Ruby and Ida; and children: Michael, Shiela, Jason, and Randy.  John Schnellbach, age 86 of Grafton, ND passed away on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at his home near Grafton, ND.
John Schnellbach was born July 3, 1934 in McHenry County, ND the son of the late Joe and Regina (Wagner) Schenllbach. He attended rural school there. Following his education he worked as farm labor and mechanic in the area. John was united in marriage to Agnes Degenstein on September 30, 1957 in Anamoose, ND. He worked construction in several areas before moving to Grafton in 1974. John had started working as a mechanic for Hanson’s Implement in 1973. He retired in 1991. He enjoyed restoring old tractors in his spare time and over the years had restored many. He is survived by his wife, Agnes of Grafton, ND his children: Joe (Patricia) Schnellbach, Gerald (Mary) Schnellbach, Viola (Brian) Hildebrandt all of Grafton, ND; Bridget (Brian) Legg, Grand Forks, ND; John Jr. (Marissa) Schnellbach, Mentor, MN; ten grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; his sister, Rose Kohler, Bismarck, ND; and brothers: Albert of Fargo, ND and George (Shirley) of Anamoose, ND. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Jacob, Edward and Walter and sister, Loretta. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, April 26, 2021 at 10:30 AM at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Grafton, ND. Visitation will be Monday for one hour prior to the service at the church. Kenneth Cordell Schmidt, 74, of Wise River, MT passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday April 21st, 2021 at Bethany in Fargo, ND.
Kenneth was born on May 15, 1946 in Grafton, ND to Raymond and Annette (Keene) Schmidt. He grew up and attended school in Grafton. He enjoyed participating in Boy Scouts, playing hockey and working at his family’s chicken hatchery. Kenneth married Catherine (Cathy) Warner in October 1964. While married to Cathy, they had two daughters, Trina and Priscilla. Kenneth enlisted in the United States Army on March 14, 1969 at Salt Lake City, UT and served in the 8th Army in communications as a Radio Operator. He was honorably discharged from active military service with the rank of Sergeant on March 6, 1971 at Fort Lewis, WA. Upon return from the Army, Ken settled in Breckenridge, CO and started his career in construction. When he was not working, he loved skiing the CO mountains, always in search of the perfect powder, which was frequently off the trails. Ken continued his construction career in the Minneapolis, MN, area where he worked on such projects as the IDS Center and the Metro Dome, giving him a reputable status in and around the Twin Cities. In the late 80’s early 90s, he headed a project bringing American carpenters to Japan to build Americanized homes. Shortly after, he’d had enough of the city life and headed West to the mountains of Montana. It was there that his contracting company, KC Schmidt Builders, spent several years on a project for the engineer who developed the technology that was used to locate the Titanic. Ken resided in MT, which he affectionately referred to as God’s country, for almost 30 years. Ken was happiest when he was one with nature and active outdoors. He loved snow skiing, water skiing, white water rafting, hunting, fishing, golf and RVing in AZ during the winters. Kenneth is survived by his two daughters, Trina (Ken) Mikula, Grand Forks, ND and Priscilla Wagner, New Hope, MN. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren: Marquise (Patrick) LaDouceur; Bryan (Kelsey) Scholler; Justine (Conner Collins) Scholler; Callie Hjemstad; Keaton Hjelmstad; Jason (Kim Son) Mikula; Jesse (Shannon) Mikula; and Haley (Justin) Moody; 9 great grandchildren: Hayden Johnson; Kross and Luca LaDouceur, Quinn and Madelyn Scholler, Cove Collins, Finlay and Eleanor Mikula, and Zane Mikula. He is also survived by a nephew, Bradley Schmidt and a niece, Jennifer (Josh) de la Fuente; great niece, Luna de la Fuente and great nephews, Patrick and Henry Schmidt. Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Annette Schmidt; by his brother, Philip Schmidt and by his great granddaughter, Penelope Moody. Celebration of Life: 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 30, 2021 in the Historic Norman Funeral Home Chapel. Interment: Later this summer at Montana State Veterans Cemetery, Helena, MT. Military Honors: Accorded at the time of the interment.  Joel D. Midgarden, age 78 of Park River, ND passed away on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at the Park River Good Samaritan Center.
Joel David Midgarden was born February 14, 1943 in Grafton, ND the son of the late Christopher and Evelyn (Jamieson) Midgarden. He attended school in rural Hoople and graduated from the Walsh County Agricultural School in Park River. He later attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. Following his education he returned home and farmed with his cousins at the Midgarden Potato Company. Joel was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Janet Hall on April 12, 1964 in Park River, ND. The couple made their home in rural Hoople. Joel retired from Midgarden Potato Company after 32 years. Shortly after retiring from farming, he began work at Harriston Industries, promoting agricultural equipment. The career at Harriston embraced his love of agriculture, travel, ingenuity and fostering friendships all around the world. He retired from there in 2005. In 2006 the couple moved to Park River, ND where he took care of his wife and enjoyed retirement as best as he could. Janet passed away on July 13, 2011. Joel suffered a massive stroke in 2012 and moved into the Park River Good Samaritan Center where he lived until his death. Joel was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, rural Hoople, the Hillcrest Golf County Club in Park River, and the Walsh County Curling Club. He served on the Board of Directors for several organizations. He was one of the founding investors in the Alexander House and Park River Good Samaritan Center. He was known for his fast wit, kindness and generosity. Although in his final years Joel required care from others, he spent a great deal of his lifetime caring for people including his brother, sister, parents, mother-in-law and his beloved wife, Janet. Joel is survived by his daughters: Nicole (Randy) Dub, Horace, ND; Barbara (Brian) Marks, Olivia, MN; grandchildren: Elizabeth Dub (Trevor Sundquist), Alexandra Dub (fiancé Andrew Sather), Samuel Marks and Maxwell Marks; his sisters: Marjorie Kitzrow, Evanston, IL and Kim (Art) McGinnis, Manhattan, NY. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and siblings: baby Guy, Doris and Neil. Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at 2:00 PM at the Zion Lutheran Church, Rural Hoople, ND. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-6 PM with a prayer service at 6:00 PM at the Church. The family requests that all those attending wear a mask. The service will be live streamed on the Tollefson Funeral Home, Inc. Facebook page and a video of the service will be posted on the funeral home website following the service. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Zion Lutheran Church, Park River Good Samaritan Center and Hillcrest Country Club.  Richard Dwight Winkler, 64, of Neche, ND, passed away Thursday, April 8, 2021, at the Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, April 16, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Nereus and Achilleus Catholic Church, Neche, ND. Visitation will be held Thursday, April 15, 2021 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church. Masks are recommended.
Dwight was born May 7, 1956, in Altona, Manitoba, to Lawrence and Marlene (Renaud) Winkler. He grew up in the Neche area and graduated from Neche High School in 1974. After high school Dwight joined the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1977. On August 21, 1981, Dwight married Anna Sloan in Cavalier, ND. He was a jack of all trades and worked various jobs in the area. He was currently working as a mechanic at Motorcoach Industries in Pembina. Dwight enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. He also enjoyed cars and riding his motorcycle. He is survived by his children: Misty Carriere; Douglas (Jennifer) Winkler; and Tiffany (Matthew) Nord, all of Neche, ND; grandchildren: Brianna Carriere, Jayme Beltran, Diesel and Dominic Winkler, and Christian and Brooklynn Nord; siblings: Darnell (Mary) Winkler, DaVonne (Jamie) Sloan, Duane Winkler, and DesaRae (Tom) Zaharia; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna; parents, Lawrence and Marlene; and brother, Darwin Winkler. |
