![]() Douglas Keith Carlson, age 65, passed away peacefully on January 16th, 2021 at Sanford Health Center in Fargo, ND with family by his side. Doug was born on December 29th, 1955 to Reuben and Shirley (Moe) Carlson in Grafton, ND. He was raised in rural Lankin, ND with his five brothers and sisters. After graduating from Lankin High School in 1974, he attended LRTC in Devils Lake, ND where his carpentry skills were established. He was united in marriage to Susan Madson on September 21st, 1979 at Elk Valley Lutheran Church. Doug was a carpenter by trade and worked for Robertson Lumber and Adamson Construction in Grafton, ND in the late '70s. From 1980-1984, he worked on the oil rigs for True Drilling which took Doug and his family to western ND and Colorado. In 1984, Doug and Sue returned to Lankin, ND to raise their three children. Doug worked for Farmers Union Oil/Cenex of Adams, ND for 25 years where he spent many hours bouncing around the fields in the TerraGator. Doug and Susan decided to move from their Lankin farm in 2013 and make their home in Grafton, ND where Doug currently worked for Marvin Windows and Doors. Throughout Doug's working life, he also used his carpentry skills to take on small side-jobs, remodel both of his homes, and help out family with projects over the years. Doug loved hunting, fishing, and spending his spare time back at the family farm working in his large garden or tending to his chickens. He also loved a good round at the poker table, even winning a time or two. On summer nights, Doug could often be found with Sue at their camper by Stump Lake. Most important to Doug was his family. He always enjoyed spending time with all of his children and grandchildren. He would often tell stories of days gone by, which usually included a funny scenario and a little teasing. Doug loved to make people laugh and used his wit on a daily basis to get in a good old-fashioned joke and provoke the well-known "DOUGLAS!!" from his loving wife and snickers from the kids. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife: Susan of Grafton, ND; children: Kimberly (Ryan Johnston) Rost, Grafton, ND; Daniel (Stephanie) Carlson, Park River, ND; Amie (Jim) Vasichek, Lakota, ND; grandchildren: Bevan, Chloe, and Aidan Rost; Hunter, SiddaLee, Amaryllis, and Raelynn Carlson; Lauren, James, and Claire Vasichek; mother, Shirley Carlson, Park River, ND; siblings: Darrell (Sherry) Carlson; Elaine (Brad) Dahl; Mark Carlson; and Mitch (Paulette) Carlson; mother-in-law: Avis Madson; Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his father Reuben Carlson; sister Rebecca Carlson; grandparents: Emil & Selma Moe and Chris & Bessie Carlson; father-in-law, Ronald Madson; cousin and friend, Glenn "Shorty" Johnson. The family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses, and staff at First Care Health Center, Sanford Health Center, and The Cancer Center of ND who have provided wonderful care to Doug over the past five years. A walk-through visitation will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2021 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Adams Mountain Lutheran Church. A private family funeral will be held following the visitation. ![]() Joseph (Joe) Theodore Holm, age 95 of rural Hoople, ND, passed away at his home on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 with family by his side. Joe was born on February 20, 1925 in Edinburg, ND, the son of the late Ole & Matilda "Tillie" (Halvorson) Holm. Joe was the 5th of 6 children. He completed his education in the Dundee Township District 35 School in the rural Edinburg/Hoople area. He went on to work on his family’s farm. Joe served in the United States Army from 1945 to 1946, spending time in the Philippines and Korea. Following his military service, he returned to North Dakota to farm. Joe was united in marriage to Mae Monson on October 25, 1953 and had three children. He farmed until his retirement in 1989 but continued to assist on the farm for many years afterwards. Joe was a proud military veteran and active member of the American Legion Post 156 in Edinburg, ND for over 70 years. He was also a member of the Edinburg Fire Department, Dundee Township Board, Hvideso Lutheran Church of rural Hoople, and Trinity Lutheran Church of Edinburg. He was incredibly prideful of his Norwegian heritage and cooked lutefisk at the Park River Bible Camp for many years. Joe was an accomplished self-made carpenter, mechanic, welder, and engineer. He always looked for ways to support his community and neighbors, including dowsing wells and repairing furnaces. Joe enjoyed fishing and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by his three children: Jane (Camburn) Shephard Crystal, ND; John (Lea) Holm Park River, ND; Tom (Kristi) Holm Hoople, ND; four grandchildren: Catherine (Richard) Booth Cavalier, ND; Tyson (Kenzie) Holm Omaha, NE; Rachel (Cody) Johansen Hoople, ND; and Jacob Holm Grand Forks ND; five step grandchildren, four great grandchildren, four step great grandchildren, and a special niece, Loretta (David) Schmidt of Colorado. Several other nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his wife Mae, parents, and siblings: Bernice, Raymond, Gilman, Leonard, and Fred. A walk-through visitation will be held on Monday, January 18, 2021 from 12:30-2:00 PM at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Edinburg, ND. A private funeral service will follow the visitation. Interment will be at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in the spring. A celebration of Joe’s life will be held later following the pandemic restrictions. ![]() Dorothy N. Kannas, 95, formerly of Cando, ND died Monday, January 11, 2021 at Bethel Lutheran and Rehab in Williston, ND, where she had lived for the last 5 years. Her beloved niece, Peggy Miller Evenson was by her side. Funeral services will be held at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home on Sunday, January 24, 2021 at 2:00pm with Pastor Rick Craig officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Pallbearers will be Jamie Jacksen, Calvin Nass, Riley Nass, Jerod Nass, Zach Meyer, Justin Marsh and Zach Bergrud. Honorary pallbearers will be Randal Nass and Tery Kannas. Music will be provided by Catherine Anfinson. Burial will take place at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Cando. Dorothy N. Henke was born November 3, 1925 in Churchs Ferry, ND, to Ewald and Martha (Schach) Henke. Dorothy was the second of three close-knit children, all growing up together in the house their grandfather built. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Penn, ND and attended country school near her home. She later attended high school in Penn, ND, where she graduated valedictorian of her class in 1943. After high school, Dorothy worked at JC Penney in Cando, ND when she met Lynn Nass, who was home on leave from the service. They were married October 20, 1945 and both went to where Lynn was stationed until his discharge. They then returned to Cando where they farmed for many years, however, they did manage to take advantage of the early years of marriage by traveling around the United States before filling their home with three dearly loved children. Dorothy’s faith was important to her and she taught both Sunday school and Bible school when her children were young, often bringing extra children along the way. After Lynn passed away in 1969, Dorothy moved into Cando and worked for the Towner County State Bank for fifteen years before retiring. On February 15, 1985, Dorothy married Carl Kannas and they resided in Great Falls, Montana until Carl passed away on February 5, 1990. She then lived with her sister, Nadine Miller, in Crookston, MN. They loved passing the time by singing and doing crossword puzzles together, a hobby Dorothy continued until her eyesight would no longer allow it. After about a year, Dorothy again made Cando her home for over twenty years. After a fall in her home, Dorothy moved to Devils Lake for rehab, eventually getting her own apartment. In Devils Lake she was close to her son, Jerry, and enjoyed visits from many of her grandchildren. In 2015, she moved to Williston to live with her son, Danny and his wife, until moving into Bethel Lutheran in 2016 where she lived until her passing. Even up to her last hours, her mind was still sharp as ever! Dorothy is survived by her son Danny (Lori), Williston, ND; son-in-law Larry Orvedal, Cando, ND; step-children: Tery Kannas, Kelso, WA; Vicki Wagner, Minneapolis, MN; and Patti Taylor, Great Falls, MT; grandchildren: Jamie (Vicki) Jacksen, Egeland, ND; Valerie Jacksen, Starkweather, ND; Randal (Grace) Nass, Eden Prairie, MN; Calvin (Shari) Nass, Williston, ND; Alyssa (Zach) Meyer, Williston, ND; Stacy (Louis) Nass-Bruskin, Seattle, WA; Misty (Justin) Marsh, Devils Lake, ND; Lyndi (Zack) Nass, New Rockford, ND; Riley Nass, Williston, ND; Roxy Nass, Devils Lake, ND and Jerod (Hayley) Nass, Devils Lake, ND; 28 great grandchildren and 10 great, great grandchildren. She is also survived by several nephews and nieces. She was especially close to and dearly loved by her two nieces, Patty (TJ) Sabie, Embarrass, MN and Peggy (Jeff) Evenson, Mentor, MN. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, sister, Nadine Miller and her husband, Earl, Crookston, MN; nephew, Mike Miller; brother, Art Henke; daughter, Linda Orvedal in 2019; son, Jerry Nass in 2014 and her daughter-in-law, Trudy Nass in 1989. We would like to especially thank all the wonderful caregivers she had at Bethel Lutheran while she resided there. They all loved her so much too!! Rest in peace, Mom! We will always love you! ![]() Lyle Gunvald Christofferson, loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 9, 2021 at the age of 79. Services will be held at the Bisbee Lutheran Cemetery on July 1, 2021 at 11:00 am with Pastor Bonnie Weaver officiating. Lyle was born on May 6, 1941. His parents Arthur and Nettie Christofferson raised him on the family farm near Bisbee, North Dakota, along with his siblings Gary, Marilyn, and Lee. He attended high school in Bisbee and college in Minot, ND. Lyle and his first wife Peggy LaFrance of Perth married in March of 1961. Together they had four children, Gary (Roseville, CA), Terry (Oroville, CA), Sonja (Elk Grove, CA), and Shelly (Forest Ranch, CA). Lyle worked for Northland Sporting Goods before opening his own sporting goods store with Peggy in Rolla, ND. After living in Rolla, his family decided to relocate to Northern California in 1979. Lyle worked in the landscaping business before returning to his passion in sporting goods. He worked in Fresno, CA for Herb Bauer for 15 years before retiring. Lyle met his second wife, Pamela, in Fresno, CA. They married on June 4, 1988. Pamela worked for Fresno Unified School District. Pamela has two sons, Charlie (Sanger, CA) and Cody (Fresno, CA), which Lyle played an active role in their lives. Lyle cared for Pamela for years when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease until it progressed to where she had to be provided with a higher level of care. Unable to spend time with Pam due to Covid, Lyle made the difficult decision to move to Oroville, CA in September 2020 to be closer to family. Lyle loved spending time outdoors. He rode snowmobiles, motorcycles, and horses. He was a hunter and fisherman. He loved his trips on horseback to the high country in California. Lyle was an encyclopedia of knowledge when it came to guns. He loved and adored his 19 grandchildren and his 5 great grandchildren. Lyle is preceded in death by his parents, brother Gary, sister Marilyn and step grandson Tyler. On January 21, 2021, just 12 days after Lyle’s passing, Pamela passed away and was reunited with Lyle. Lyle is survived by his brother Lee, his four children, 2 stepsons, 18 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. All who knew him will dearly miss Lyle. He will be forever in our hearts and memories. ![]() Verna L Thompson born April 25, 1935 went to be with the Lord January 2, 2021. Verna was predeceased by her parents Alvin and Rachel Thompson of LeRoy, SASK, her husband of 24 years Allen Thompson, son: Elden Thompson, sisters: Mary Lou (George) Braitenbach, Aletha (Roy) Stein and Ramona (Charlie) Boseke.Verna is survived by children: Lea Beach (husband Randy Krohn), Omaha, NE; David Thompson Mounds View, MN; and Daniel (Jann) Thompson Adams, ND; siblings: Fern (Ed) Wagner Saskatoon, SASK; and Johnny (Sandra) Thompson of LeRoy, SASK; friend: Ron Boseke, Adams, ND, grandchildren: Carla Grossman Ardoch, ND; Connor Slasson Duluth, MN; Brigit (Tony) Pagenkopf, Rosesemount/Apple Valley, MN; great grandchildren: Evra Grossman, Evan Rohrik, Ryder Llanes and many cousins, nieces and nephews in Canada and the United States. Although Verna was a permanent resident and expert on the United States-including each state’s capital- she remained a Canadian citizen. After coming to the United States in the 1950’s she met and married Allen Thompson. They had four children. The family moved around quite a bit but spent all of their lives in North Dakota and Minnesota. Verna was a wonderful homemaker and mother to her four children. She loved games, puzzles, dolls, butterflies, and birds. She never knew what boredom was and stayed busy baking her famous chocolate chip cookies, sweet buns, lefse and many other delights that we will all miss. Her days were spent watching her favorite shows including a soap opera or two and of course the news. She kept up on world events and always let us know when bad weather was headed our way-whether we were in the same state as her or not. A private family service will be Friday, January 8, 2021 at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Park River. A walk through visitation will be held from 12:00 -1:00 PM on Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be at the St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery of rural Park River, ND, in the spring. A video of the service will be posted on the Tollefson Funeral Home website following the service. |
