 Marilyn J. Hovde, age 93 of Grafton, ND passed away on Friday, October 29, 2021 at the Lutheran Sunset Home of Grafton.
Marilyn Elshaug was born June 23, 1928 in Grafton, North Dakota, the daughter of the late John and Johanna (Anderson) Elshaug. Marilyn attended school in Grafton. She was united in marriage to Hans Clayton Hovde on December 16, 1947 in Grafton. They made their home in Grafton where they raised their six children. Hans passed away on April 7, 1984. While raising her family, Marilyn worked at Williamson Creamery, Grafton American Legion, and later at JC Penney where she was employed for several years. Marilyn enjoyed cooking for her family and making lefse. She was also noted for her quick wit and one-liners. She is survived by her children: Michael (Bea) Hovde, Forest River, ND; Gail (Willy) Stoltman, Dazey, ND; Cheryl (Bernie) Davidson, Ridgefield, WA; Marlene Hagarty, Chandler, AZ; Guy Hovde, Grafton, ND; 14 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, and several great-great grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews, also survive. Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Steven Eugene Hovde, and great-grandson, Zachary Wayne Osowski, sisters: Emily (Clarence) Viger, Mabel (Martin) Kennelly, Helen (Millard) Torkelson, Ruth (Roland) Riopelle, Ruby (Ernest) Skjerven, June (Harvey) Skjerven and brothers: Roy (Irene), Edward, Leonard (Martha), and Willard. Private family service will take place at a later date.

 Neil David Kiemele, aged 18, passed away Friday, October 22, 2021. Though he will no longer be here to hug tightly, his light will forever shine down on those he loved.
Neil came into the world March 26, 2003, on a blustery North Dakota spring morning. From the moment Neil was born, his inner joy gleamed so brightly, and as he grew older that very spark inspired each person he encountered. From his contagious smile and his signature “Big Dawg” moves to those high fives that challenged all he greeted to reach for the sky, he will forever leave an impression on our hearts. School was Neil’s happy place. It was here he thrived alongside his classmates and peers, nurtured by his earthly angels Vik, Cori, Robyn, and Nancy. It was here he took flight and soared as an eagle. It was here that not a moment was ever taken for granted or wasted. Neil loved to be on the move. He looked forward to his daily trips to Bjornsons with his dad to get chocolate milk and M&Ms. With his mom, he spent numerous miles simply driving around the block, jamming out to his favorite rap music. If Neil was not out and about cruising with those he loved, he was likely to be found walking with his dog or riding his horse alongside his sister Shelby. It was his love for animals that led him to become an active member in the Northern Explorers 4H club. If there is one life rule Neil imparts, it is to go forward as a perpetual beacon of light, living life to the fullest and making each moment count...even if it might be in one’s own sweet time. He always loved dressing up at Halloween and liked to scare his mom. Neil had an everyday routine to uncover the birds, get ready for school, feed the horses and watch TV before Vik would come to pick him up for school. He loved everything and everybody no matter what their age or gender. He is survived by his parents, Harlan and Etty Kiemele, Cavalier, ND, sister, Shelby (Jesse) Bjornstad, Walhalla, ND, uncles and aunts: Rodney Kiemele, Arthur and Mary Rosenberg, Rick and DeeDee Helgoe, Dara and Nick Jezierny, Heather Knutson, great-grandmother, Inga McDonald, cousins: Rachel Berger, Travis George, Michael Kiemele, Alexis Rosenberg, Kristina (Mark) Halvorson, Sophie (Derrick) Herman, Sarah (Justin) Price, and the three Helgoe girls he adored: Tiffany (Chase) Furstenau, Vanessa (Chris) Lawonn and Ronica Helgoe. Also his cat, Squeaky and horse, Romey. Preceding him in death were his grandparents: Herman and Helen Kiemele, Max and Sarah Rosenberg, and Jackie Eider, aunt, Patty Kiemele, and uncle, Loren Kiemele. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the Walhalla School Gymnasium, in Walhalla, ND. Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 26th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the United Lutheran Church in Cavalier, ND.  Butch (Harold Edward) Cox, 77, lifelong resident of Grafton, ND died on Monday, October 18, 2021 in the comfort of his home under the care of his loving staff at the Friendship Group Home of Grafton and the Red River Valley Hospice due to complications from Dementia.
Butch was born July 25, 1944 in Drayton, ND, to Edward and Dorothy (Long) Cox. He was baptized at the Methodist Church of Grafton. He attended the Assembly of God Church with his mom and later attended church with family friends. Butch spent the majority of his life with the loving care of his parents in Grafton. In 1987 he started attending Friendship of Grafton, later moving into a Friendship Group Home. In his younger years he enjoyed playing baseball at the Grafton Park, the score was always 2 to 2. He also enjoyed the local swimming pool and making friends wherever he went. He was well known in the Grafton area and never forgot a person he met. Later in life he enjoyed county/polka music, western movies and watching baseball. He is survived by his sister Marjorie Harlow; niece Renae (Elton) Heuchert; nephews: Rodney (Judy) Harlow and William (Tammy) Harlow; great nieces and nephews: Tyler (Jamie) Harlow, Troy Harlow, Mikayla (Tyler) Tingwald, Stephanie (Jason) Peterson, Carissa (Justin) Aberle, Heidi (Craig) Schaefbauer and Susie (Austin) Simons; as well as several great-great nieces/nephews and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Gerald Harlow. The family would like to thank his Friendship Family for the amazing care and all the fun he enjoyed with you. He enjoyed Park River Bible Camp, the trip to Nashville, fishing, camping, Twins games, visiting horse ranches, train rides and eating chicken. His family appreciates the wonderful acts of kindness shown to Butch through the years from the people of Grafton and neighboring communities. A memorial service will be Saturday, October 23, 2021 at 10:30 AM at the Grafton Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will follow the service at the Drayton City Cemetery at 1:30 PM.  Bruce W. Lee, 63, of Walhalla, ND, passed away Monday, October 18, 2021, at his home. Funeral service will be held Friday, October 22, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. at the Walhalla- Park Center Presbyterian Church, Walhalla, ND. Visitation will be held Thursday, October 21, 2021, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the church.
Bruce Wayne Lee was born December 6, 1957, in Langdon, ND, to Oliver Sr. and Bernice (Williams) Lee. He grew up in the Walhalla area and graduated from Walhalla High School in 1976. On July 1, 1978, Bruce married Susan Grant and together they had three sons: Thomas, Taylor, and Terence. Bruce worked at Otter Tail Power in Beulah, ND, for a number of years. In 2007, Bruce moved back to the family farm near Walhalla. He served on the Freemont Township Board and was a member of the Hazen and Walhalla Masonic Lodges and El Zagal Shrine. Some of the things he enjoyed were working on vehicles, welding, hunting, reloading ammo and going to gun shows. He is survived by his sons: Thomas (Rhonda) Lee, Hazen, ND; Taylor Lee, Phoenix, AZ; and Terence Lee, Hazen, ND; grandchildren, Abby and Wyatt Lee; siblings: Donna (Glenn) McGlynn, Phyllis Tongen, and Oliver, Jr. (Debra) Lee and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Gary Romfo.  Bradley Gendron, 69, of Walhalla, ND passed away Saturday, October 16, 2021, at Sanford Medical Center, Fargo, ND. Funeral service will be held Friday, October 22, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. at the Walhalla Lutheran Church, Walhalla, ND. Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday, October 21st from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Bradley Gendron was born February 21, 1952, at Altona, Manitoba to Dalton and Elaine (Beaudoin) Gendron. He grew up in Walhalla and graduated from Walhalla High School. Brad then served In the U.S. Navy for four years. On January 18, 1975, he married Gayle Bennett at the Walhalla Lutheran Church. He then reenlisted in the Navy for another 17 years. After his discharge in 1992, he went to work at Motor Coach Industries for 26 years until his retirement. Things Bradley enjoyed were collecting coins, building models, old radio talk shows, his 1960 Impala, and he was an avid reader. He is survived by his wife, Gayle, sons: Damon (Lisa) Gendron, Anchorage, AK, and Jon Gendron, Alamogordo, NM, granddaughters: Genevieve and Elsie Gendron, sisters: Susan Gendron, Walhalla, ND and Ellen (George) Pickerign, Gulf Port, MS, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents and sister, Marlo Gendron.  Betty J. Bjelde, 91, of Cavalier, ND, passed away Thursday, October 14, 2021, at Wedgewood Manor in Cavalier, ND. Betty Jane Johnson was born February 9, 1930 to Jonina (Jo) Johnson and Marvin Gilley. Her grandparents, Rannveig and Gudmundur (Goodman) Johnson raised her from 3 years of age. Betty grew up in Grafton, ND and as a young girl she sang with a church group which traveled to different events to perform. She loved all animals, country & gospel music, hardanger, crocheting and knitting. She survived a severe case of diphtheria as a freshman in high school and never returned to school but, received her GED as an adult. Betty married Duane Bjelde of Hensel ND on July 2, 1949, where they lived for 20 years and she began her working career at Borg Nursing Home. In 1970, they moved to Cavalier where she worked at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital for 20 years as a technician in Central supply, ER, and OR. After retiring Betty and Duane wintered in Mission, TX for 15 years and remained in Cavalier after that. Survived by her husband Duane, 2 daughters Darlene Kihne(Michael) of Sioux Falls SD; Lyndis Jaster (Lee Brown) of Fargo ND; three grandchildren Todd Kihne, Bryan Kihne and Katie Jaster Sayler; nine great grandchildren. Preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, 12 siblings, and twin granddaughters. .  Dwayne Arthur Gratton 88 of Olga, ND passed away Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at the Pembilier Nursing Center in Walhalla, ND.
Dwayne was born the first of seven children to Harvey & Eugenia (Brusseau) Gratton on May 14, 1933 in North Olga Township. He spent his first five years in North Olga beginning his school days with his Aunt Adeline Gratton as his first teacher. He moved with his family to the farm west of Olga and attended school in Olga. Dwayne attended the Agricultural School in Park River but did not like being off the farm. He married Annette E. Roberge on June 18th, 1953 and made their home in Olga. Their first two children Phylis and Roger were born while in Olga. They moved to Washington in 1956 where Dwayne found work at Boeing. Evelyn was born while they were there. Dwayne then moved his family to California where he worked for a tile company for two years, and returned to Olga where three more children were born, Delbert, Sylvia, and Anita. Dwayne enjoyed working as a heavy equipment operator working for Mike Austfjord, Joe Mayo, and a few other contractors throughout his lifetime. He took pride in his work and mastered it. Following his retirement, Dwayne continued his love for the great outdoors by driving around throughout the region as he knew every backroad, nook and cranny in the land. He was an avid hunter known for his “dead-eye shooting skills.” In his older age, he became known for shooting thousands of gophers to pass his time. Following an illness, and severe arthritis in his knees, Dwayne entered Pembilier Nursing Center in Walhalla, ND on April, 2021, becoming his new, temporary home. God called Dwayne home unexpectant in his sleep. Dwayne is survived by his six children. Paulson, age 15 of Hoople, ND passed away on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at the First Care Health Center of Park River.
Mya Paulson was born September 21, 2006 in Olympia, WA, the daughter of Robert and Michelle (Nickel) Paulson. The family moved to Hoople, ND in 2010 and she attended school in Hoople, Crystal and Edinburg where she was currently in her freshman year. She was a girl scout and enjoyed playing basketball and volleyball. She loved to hang out with her friends and her brothers. Mya is survived by her parents Robert (Michelle), Hoople, ND, brothers: Anthony, Grafton, ND and Cylus, Hoople, ND, maternal grandmother Laura Nickel, Hoople, ND, paternal grandparents Debbie Willms, CO and Keith Paulson, Bellevue, NE, uncles: Eddy Crook, CO and Thomas Robinson, Olympia, WA. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather Dave Nickel and uncle Shawn Nickel. A visitation will be held Saturday, October 9, 2021 from 3-5 PM at the First Lutheran Church of Hoople. Rose Compeau was born March 12, 1947 at Walhalla, ND to George and Mary (Bartlette) Compeau. She grew up in Walhalla where she attended school. Rose then lived in Grand Forks before moving back to Walhalla. On November 2, 1968, she married George Kalis at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Walhalla. After their marriage they lived in Walhalla where she was the bookkeeper for Kalis Masonry Construction. Things she enjoyed were painting, sculpturing, crocheting, and being outdoors gardening. Most of all she loved spending time with her family, fur baby and grand fur babies. She is survived by her husband, George, daughter, Tammy (Jed) Sullivan, Walhalla, ND, Autumn Forschen, who she treated and related to as a daughter, and grandson, Kieran Sullivan. Also survived by her sisters: Lila Baker and Lou Ann Dauphanis, and by her nieces, nephews, and numerous cousins. Preceding her in death were her parents, sisters: Elizabeth Anderson and Mary Compeau, and her beloved fur babies. |
