He attended the rural Metcalf School, and graduated from Cando High School in 1952. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army. He spent the majority of his time in service as a Radio Repairman in Germany and was able to enjoy travel within Germany and the rest of Europe, with Rome being a major highlight. One of his favorite stories of the time he spent in service occurred during a trip home on leave, when his seat on a flight from Chicago to Fargo was next to then-U.S. Senator Bill Langer. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home to farm with his parents. He married Betty Freund, also of Cando, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on June 4, 1957, and they had 5 children. Dale had many interests and was involved in several community organizations.
