 Richard N. Brown, 89, of Crystal, ND passed away Friday, July 31, 2020 at Aneta Parkview Health Center, Aneta, ND. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, August 4, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. the First Lutheran Church, Hoople, ND. Social distancing and the use of masks are encouraged.
Richard was born December 6, 1930 at Long Beach, California to Nathan and Mable (Johnson) Brown. He grew up in Long Beach and graduated from St. Anthony’s High School. Richard then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served in the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1953. After his discharge from the service, he became an electrician and worked in the greater Los Angeles area. He married Marietta Rostello and together they had eight children: Shirley, Carol, Richard, David, Kevin, Nathan, Timothy, and Susan. Marietta passed away in 1973. Richard then married Alva Axvig Luithle on May 16, 1974 in Long Beach. Alva had two sons: Jerry Lee Luithle and Jay Luithle. In 2005, Richard and Alva moved to Crystal, ND. Things Richard enjoyed were gardening, playing the piano, his grandchildren, and the Pacific Ocean. He is survived by his wife, Alva; children: Shirley, Carol, Richard, Nathan, Timothy, and Susan; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also survived by stepsons: Jerry Lee and Jay Luithle. Preceding him in death were his parents; first wife, Marietta; sons: David and Kevin.

 Rory J. Schulz, Jr., of Grand Forks, ND, formerly of Hoople, ND, passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at his home in Grand Forks. Private family funeral service will be held Monday, August, 3, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Hoople. A public visitation will be held in the Hoople Park following the funeral and burial.
Rory Joel Schulz, Jr. was born on January 7, 1987. He graduated from Valley High School in 2006. He was employed by Elkhorn Farms of Grand Forks. Growing up, Rory’s tough guy exterior couldn’t shadow his love of all things living: snakes, iguanas, dogs, and even his adopted kitten, Killer. That tough guy grew into a tough man—tough to sometimes deal with, tough to stay mad at, tough to not love, tough to forget. Often times short with his words, Rory demonstrated his love through his actions. Never could a person resist his smile, his quick hugs, or his shoulder rubs. Rory loved fiercely and protected endlessly. No matter his personal battles, he never let anything slide that hurt those he loved—whether on the playground or out in the world. Rory was a classmate, a friend, a son, a brother, an uncle, and he was loved. Rory was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Raymond and May Schulz; and his maternal grandmother, Rozella McKay. Rory is survived by his parents, Rory Schulz Sr. and Joan Buckholz; his siblings, Tony Buckholz and Alisha Schulz; his niece and nephew, Mallory and Calvin Latozke; and his significant other, Michelle Smith.  Richard Duane McConnell, 87, passed away in his home in Mesa, AZ, surrounded by his loving family and devoted wife, Gayle, who selflessly cared for him during his courageous battle with numerous illnesses.
Richard was born on December 13, 1932, to Leonard and Gudrun (Matthiasson) McConnell. At a very young age, Richard earned the nickname "Buster" which stayed with him throughout his life. Richard grew up on the family farm and graduated from Bowesmont High School. On October 25, 1953, he married the love of his life, Gayle Franks. In 1954, Richard volunteered for enlistment in the United States Army and served for two years as a tank commander. Richard was very proud of his military service and loved his country. While continuing to operate the family farm, Richard attended the University of North Dakota and graduated with his bachelor's degree and masters degree in accounting. He earned his Certified Public Accountant certificate and maintained a CPA practice in Drayton, ND. Richard also shared his accounting knowledge with his students over the years as a professor at Bemidji State College, the University of North Dakota, and as on off-campus professor for the University of Northern Colorado. Not only was Richard a farmer, CPA, and teacher, he was a musician. He found great joy in music (especially Dixieland) and played multiple instruments including the trombone, bugle, piano, and saxophone. He was a member of several bands, played at many memorial services, and was asked to play live "Taps" at several military services. Richard's additional accomplishments include: Pembina County Farm Bureau Director, ND Farm Bureau Director, Koda Bank Director, Kem Temple Shriner, member of the Masons, President of the Bowesmont Heritage Preservation, and the Bowesmont Cemetary Board. Richard is survived by his wife of 66 years Gayle; Children: Richard (Sharon) McConnell, Kris (Bennet) Tucker, and Rachel (Michael) Wittrock; Grandchildren: Brandon (Chasity) Drees, Kelly (Casey) McWilliams, Christian McConnell, Emily McConnell, and Ava Wittrock; 4 great-grandchildren: Ella and Porter McWilliams and Norah and Aubrey Drees; 3 brothers: James (Frances) McConnell, Bill (Ruth) McConnell, and Allen (Carol) McConnell; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceeded in death by his parents: Leonard and Gudrun McConnell and nephew Matt McConnell. A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 31, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bowesmont Cemetery, Bowesmont, ND. Please bring your lawn chairs. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Shriners Hospital. Lunch will be served at the McConnell Family Farm following the service.  Richard (Rick) Ernest Sveen, age 71 died July 23rd, 2020. He was born on June 22nd, 1949, in Grafton, ND, the son of Ernest Sveen and Gudrun (Runa) Eastman Sveen. Rick attended Edinburg Schools until turning his efforts to helping on the family farm. Rick has born with a learning disability and worked hard through his life to manage it. He enjoyed working with the land as well as with both the dairy cattle and the beef cattle until he moved to Fergus Falls, MN for training in life skills and trade skills. Following the successful completion of his training he moved to the Fargo area where he lived and worked from the1980’s through 2010.
Richard spent many years living in Fargo within the group home system of Fraser Ltd from which he continued his involvement with work as well as various social and sport activities. This continued until a hip replacement surgery sidelined him and necessitated a move to a nursing level care home within the Fraser system. After Rick improved post-surgery, he again transferred within Fraser to another group home. Rick enjoyed his time at Fraser until he was hospitalized in Jan of 2019. This hospitalization proved to be the 1st of many in 2019 and 2020. Rick struggled with recurring infections until his death on July 23rd, 2020. Rick’s favorite pastimes included Bison football, Twins baseball and The Indianapolis Colts and the MN Vikings. He loved to attend in person or watch on TV and would banter with whoever was willing about why those teams might not be the “best team built”. Rick enjoyed visits to the farm in Edinburg and time with family. Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Sveen and Gudrun (Runa) Eastman Sveen. He is survived by his siblings Judy (Dennis) Lunde, Boca Raton, FL., Randell Sveen, Edinburg, ND and Russell (Susan) Sveen of Carmel, IN., nephews Darrin Lunde (Boca Raton, FL) and James (Stacey) Lundy (Boca Raton, FL), Erik Sveen (Carmel, IN) and niece Madison Sveen (Carmel, IN) and one grandnephew Devin Lunde. Rick also enjoyed his familial bond with all his extended family and friends. He truly loved people. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM, Weds. July 29th at the Edinburg Trinity Lutheran Cemetery where Richard will rest next to his parents.  Joseph F. Campbell, age 71 of Warsaw, ND passed away of natural causes on Friday, June 5, 2020 at his home in Warsaw, ND.
Joe was born July 4, 1948 in Grafton, ND the son of Shanley Campbell and Ruth Shoults-Gornowich. He was a graduate of Minto High School and attended Mayville State University. Joe worked as a truck driver most of his adult life and had driven in all 50 states. He flew to Hawaii just so he could drive there and accomplish this feat. Joe enjoyed fishing, watching sports on TV, watching the History channel and listening to all types of music. He enjoyed playing cards and competing in the family football pool. Joe is survived by his siblings: Marge (Warren) McFall, Bill (Diane) Campbell, Peg (Roger) Shaver, Beth (Lory) Bylin, and Dan Shoults. Joe is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Barb Campbell and Lisa Shoults. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Joe was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and brothers: Jim Campbell, Bob Campbell and Paul Shoults. Memorial services will be Monday, July 27, 2020 at 10:00 AM at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton, ND. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Minto, ND. A luncheon will be served at the Minto Community Center following the interment.  William (Bill) Louis Grandy, Jr., age 70 died of natural causes, on July 18, 2020, after a long fight against ALS (Lou Gerhig's Disease). He was born on March 13, 1950, in Grafton, ND, the son of William (Bill) Grandy and Mary Daniels Grandy.
Bill graduated from St. Thomas High School in 1968. He attended the University of North Dakota for one year before following in his father's footsteps and running the family farm. Bill married Diane Redmann at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in St. Thomas, ND. They celebrated 49 years of marriage on July 3, 2020. Bill spent many years serving the community children on the St. Thomas School Board as a member and President, and also on the Pembina County Special Ed Board. Bill enjoyed working alongside his fellow sugar beet farmers, promoting and improving the community while serving on the American Crystal Sugar Coop Board. One of Bills favorite past times was to talk and tell stories. He loved to be around people and had an incredible memory for details, dates, and names. Traveling with his family, water skiing, and sitting around the campfire exchanging stories were some of his favorite hobbies. Bill and Diane spent their summers enjoying the lake and visiting with friends and family in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. He was fond of spending his winters with friends and family in Yuma, Arizona and traveling to spend the day in Mexico. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William (Bill) Grandy and Mary Daniels Grandy. Bill is survived by his wife of 49 years, Diane, daughters, Margo (Troy) Spilde, Springfield, Missouri, Sarah Hansson, Ramsey, New Jersey; six grandchildren Liam Hansson (18), Kirsten Spilde (16), Mekenzie Hansson (15), Scarlett Hansson (13), Bret Spilde (13), Alexa Spilde (11). He is also survived by his sister Beth (Bill) Landrigan and his niece Katie (Jeff) Ragland, and nephew Charlie (Beth) Landrigan. Visitation will be held on Monday, July 27, 2020 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Tollefson Funeral Home, 154 W 12th Street, Grafton, ND. Services will be on Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at 10:00 am at the St. Thomas High School Gymnasium. Bertrand “Bert” Warner, 97, of Pembina, ND passed away Thursday, July 16, 2020 at the Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Lutheran Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 21st from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church. Social distancing will be observed, thus limiting the number in attendance. Also, masks are recommended. The service on Wednesday will be live streamed on the Askew Funeral Homes Facebook Page. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Pembina Cemetery or the Pembina Ambulance Service.
Bertrand Dean Warner was born January 3, 1923 in Pembina County to Minnie and Lewis Warner. He grew up on a farm with his family near Hamilton, ND, until 1938, when they moved to Pembina, ND. He attended school at McArthur, ND. In 1941, he moved to Pasadena, CA and worked at Lockheed Martin. Bert was married to Donna Hartje in 1943. That same year he joined the U.S. Navy and served his country during World War II. It was during his time in California, that Bert realized his heart belonged in North Dakota. Upon his discharge from the Navy they moved back to Pembina and he pursued his passion farming. He enjoyed nothing more than driving the tractor. Bert farmed for many years with his two brothers, Alvin and Leo. In later years he farmed with this nephew, Gary Warner. Bert and Donna had three daughters. Donna passed away in 1989. Bert then married Judith Hughes in 1990. They enjoyed winter years in Mesa, AZ. Bert did retire but no one could figure out when, since he continued to stay engaged and worked on the farm until his last couple of years. He is survived by his wife, Judy; daughters: Linda Warner, Plymouth, MN and Gaye (Ron) Fritz, Pembina, ND; step-children: Jeff Hughes, Neche, ND, Jackie (Steve) Johnson, Reiles Acres, ND, Laurie (Allen) Williams, Montrose, CO, Jeremy (Beth) Hughes, Thompson, ND; grandchildren: Curtis (Tracy) Margerum, Stafford, VA, Christi (John) Newell, Maple Grove, MN, Chad Margerum, Maple Grove, MN, Erica Fritz and Kayla Fritz, both of Pembina, ND; and five great-grandchildren: Karly and Kristopher Margerum; Logan and Jace Newell; River Fritz and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, five sisters, two brothers, wife, Donna, daughter and son-in-law, Charlene and Charlie Margerum; grandson, Cory Margerum; stepson, Jon Hughes.  Bernice Svercl, age 86, of Fordville, ND, passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2020 in the Good Samaritan Society-Park River, ND.
Bernice was born April 21, 1934, the daughter of Anton and Agnes (Trenda) Machovsky, near Pisek, ND. She grew up in Vernon Township, Walsh County, ND. While growing up she worked hard helping out her father on the farm. She married Donald Svercl on September 30, 1957 in Grafton, ND. They continued to live in the area and settled down on the family farm near Fordville. In 1970, they moved into Fordville where Bernice started working as a cook for the Fordville Public School. She retired in 1995 and continued to live in Fordville. In September of 2013, she moved into the Good Samaritan Center in Park River. Surviving members of her family include her sons: David, Syracuse, NY and Douglas (Mona), Maple Grove, MN; three grandchildren: Adam (Laura), Erin, and Kara Svercl; three great-grandchildren: Addison, Harrison and Coleson. She was preceded in death by her husband Donald on March 5, 1998, her parents, sisters; LeAnn (Ray) Dahlen and Shirley (Jim) Mulbrecht; brothers-in-law: Gordon Svercl, Ervin Svercl, Leo Kirchoffner; sister-in-law: Grace Kirchoffner and niece: Shelly Dahlen. GRAVESIDE SERVICES will be held Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. in the W.F.L.A. Lodge-Kosobud Cemetery of rural Lankin, ND, with Larry Omdahl officiating. From Lankin, on Walsh County Road 15, drive 8 miles west, then turn south on Walsh County 16 and go 3 miles to the cemetery.  Irene Rosalie Lindgren, age 80, passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at Park Manor in The Woodlands, TX. Irene was born November 21, 1939 in Grafton, ND the daughter of Steve and Elizabeth (LeClerc) Silewski. She attended Grafton elementary and high school. She went to college at NDSU in Fargo, ND.
In her twenties Irene moved to Milwaukee, WI where she worked as an administrator and did some modeling for the Green Bay Packers and Vince Lombardi. While in Milwaukee she met and married Robert S. Lindgren. Irene enjoyed being a mom and homemaker. After their first daughter Maria was born they moved to Flint, MI where they had two sons, Marc and Matthew. They moved to Pennsylvania then to Washington, IL where their second daughter Machelle was born in 1971. In 1972 they relocated to Newton, IA for 11 years then to Houston, TX where she stayed until 1989 when she divorced Robert and moved back to North Dakota to help take care of her parents before they passed. In 2017 Irene’s kids moved her back to The Woodlands, TX to take care and be close to her in her later years. Irene enjoyed her garden, cooking, canning, sewing and being a mom. She loved planning yearly trips to see the country and share these adventures with her family. She said that these were her favorite years of her life. She was a devoted Catholic and donated to Mary Knoll Fathers since she got her first job as a teenager. She instilled this faith in her family. Irene was proceeded in death by her father Steve Silewski, mother Elizabeth(LeClerc) Silewski, brothers Chester and Stephen Silewski. Irene is survived by her sister Joyce (Mike) Gierszewski, her children Maria Linza, Marc Lindgren, Matthew (Amiee) Lindgren, and Machelle (Tom) Piazza and 9 grandchildren. Graveside services will be held on Friday, July 17, 2020 at 3:00 P.M. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery of Oakwood. Visitation will be for one hour prior at the cemetery.
