Arthur J. Gapp, 91, of Walhalla, ND, passed away Saturday, September 30, 2023, at the Pembilier Nursing Center, Walhalla, ND. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, October 5, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Boniface Catholic Church, Walhalla, ND. Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 4, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. vigil service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Pembilier Nursing Center, Walhalla Ambulance Service, or the Pregnancy Help Center, Park River, ND. Arthur Jacob Gapp was born October 19, 1931, to Albert and Ottilia (Stidel) Gapp in the Fremont Township at Walhalla where he attended grade school. He was baptized and confirmed at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Walhalla. He graduated from St. Aloysius in Oakwood, North Dakota in 1950. In the fall of 1952, Arthur joined the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1954, after serving in Germany during the Korean Conflict. On October 19, 1955, Arthur married Marilyn Metzger at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Langdon, ND. They lived and farmed in the Fremont Township until 1994 when Art retired and moved to Walhalla in 1996. Art was a past board member of the Farmers Elevator Walhalla Coop, St. Boniface Parish Council and the St. Boniface Cemetery Board. He was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus and Langdon Eagle Club. Art enjoyed spending time with his grandkids, hunting, fishing, playing cards, and visiting. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; daughters: Constance, Colleen (Ralph) Manley, Dianne (Wade) Pearson, Marlys Johansen, Janelle (Randy) Rust; sons: Wayne (Roxanne) Gapp, Glenn (Julianne) Gapp, and Lyle (Kim) Gapp; grandchildren: Rachel (Kevin) Johnson, Curt and Breanna Manley, Courtney (Dustin) Krump, Chantelle (Brady) Barth, Colton (Megan) Gapp, Cristen (Jacob) Schultz, Lyola, Christian, Karley Pearson, Luke (Randi) Johansen, Olivia (Brock) Taylor, Matthew, Ryan, Madison (Josh) Reiner, Scott, Mykia, Aly, TJ Gapp, Raquel (Michael) Meuller, Jared (Brielle) Rust, Shelby Rust, Paul, Nadine, Samuel, Michael Gapp; great-grandchildren: Dominic Ressler, Lenyx, Layven, and Londyn Krump, Hudson and Hannah Barth, Quinn and Cameron Taylor, Isla and Ellis Rust, Niko Johnson, Asher Gapp, Smith Mueller, and Briella Schultz; brother, Clarence; sister, Cecelia Kryzsko; sister-in-law, Velma Gapp, and brother-in-law, Ron Tellinghusen. Jeffrey L. Stark, 67, of Cavalier, ND passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at his childhood home in rural Cavalier, after a brief but courageous battle with esophageal cancer, surrounded by his loving family. Houser, age 98 of Park River, North Dakota passed away Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at the Good Samaritan Center of Park River. Margaret M. Pic was born April 10, 1925 on the family farm in Sauter Township, Walsh County, North Dakota, the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Pesek) Pic. She attended rural school in Sauter Township. After her schooling she worked on the family farm and for the local neighbors. Margaret was united in marriage to Frank Houser on July 10, 1947 on the family farm. The couple made their home in Park River where they raised their family. She worked for the Park River Potato Company and Danny Larson. Frank passed away on October 15, 1998. Margaret continued to make her home in Park River until the time of her death. She was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Park River, North Dakota. She loved to be with her family and visit with people. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, canning, baking, taking yearly vacations with Frank and bus trips to the casino. Margaret is survived by her son, Ronnie Houser, Aneta, North Dakota; grandsons: Kelly (Kathy) Houser, Park River, ND; Dion (Miyako) Carlson, Park River, ND; great grandchildren: Samantha, Brandon, Madison, Cordell, Trent and Shantel; sister-in-law, Angie Pic, Park River, ND. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Frank, daughter Darlene (Cledith) Carlson; daughter-in-law Lynda Houser; grandchildren: Priscilla Carlson and Tracy Houser; two brothers and four sisters. (Rutherford) Dubourt, 89, of Grand Forks, ND and formerly of Walhalla, ND, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, September 18, 2023. Joyce was born January 3, 1934 and was the daughter of M.C. “Meff” and May (Soeby) Rutherford. She grew up in Walhalla, ND and attended school at Walhalla Public Schools. After graduating, she married Leon F. Dubourt, on June 26, 1952. Together they had seven children: Dawn, Babette, Douglas, Jocelyn, Renee, Wendy, and Jaime. Joyce worked outside the home as a bookkeeper at the Corps of Engineer Par Site, Walhalla Grain Elevator, Pembina County Soil Conservation District, and the Pembina County Historical Museum in Cavalier. She enjoyed music, was an avid reader, crossword puzzle solver, jigsaw puzzler, and looked forward to watching Jeopardy each day. She is survived by her children: Dawn Schurman, Grand Forks, ND, Babette (Brian) Jones, Eugene, OR, Jocelyn (Brad) Sherwood and Renee Barry both of Grand Forks, ND, Wendy (Jeffery) Herman, Bismarck, ND, Jamie (Joe) Deck, Grand Forks, ND, 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren. Lopez, Sr., age 76 of Grafton, ND passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2023 at his home surrounded by family. Alberto Lopez Sr. was born July 1, 1947 in Grafton, ND, the oldest of 10 children born to Maximilliano and Manuela (Ramirez) Lopez. He began working as a farm laborer at the age of 12. He was united in marriage to Patricia Ramirez in 1968. The couple migrated from Carrizo Springs, TX where he was employed as a butcher to Glasston, ND, then St. Thomas, ND where they raised their 5 children. They later moved to Grafton. Alberto enjoyed spending time with his kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. He enjoyed hunting and attending various local car shows and grilling. He is survived by his wife Patricia Lopez; chidren: Alberto Lopez Jr. (Connie), Roberto Lopez Sr. (Robin), Gilberto Lopez, Irma Moran (Paul) and Delicia Glaze. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren with one on the way; along with numerous members of his extended family-the ones that chose to adopt him and Patricia as a parent or grandparent. Nord, 80, of Cavalier, ND, passed away Friday, September 8, 2023, at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier, ND. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Cavalier. Gary was born January 24th, 1943, in Devils Lake ND to Oscar Nord & Dorothy (Weiss) Nord. He graduated from high school at Churchs Ferry, ND in 1960 and attended two years at North Dakota State University before enlisting in the US Navy on October 18th, 1963. Gary served four years as an aviation electronics technician at U.S. Naval Air Station Cubi Point, located at the edge of Naval Base Subic Bay in Bataan, Philippines. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on October 17th, 1967. Gary met Maria Toews during the summer of 1969 at Bible Camp on Lake St Martin, Manitoba, and they were married July 11th, 1970. They recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary. They were blessed with three daughters, Maureen, Teresa, and Kristina. Gary and Maria started their married life in North Platte, Nebraska, where Gary worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as an electrician. He continued his railroad career in Seattle, Washington, as a brakeman and later as an engineer. They returned to North Dakota in 1979 where he worked on the Northern Pacific Railroad for two years. In 1981 Gary returned to life as a college student, and in November 1984 earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Minot State University with a major in Computer Programming and a minor degree in Mathematics. In February 1985 Gary accepted a position as Computer Programmer Analyst and became a civilian employee of the US Army at Tooele Army Depot, Tooele UT. He retired from Tooele Army Depot in May 2008 after faithfully serving the US Government for 27 years, including his time in the Navy. They stayed in Tooele for several years after retirement, then moved to Cavalier ND in 2016 to be closer to their brothers and sisters. Gary loved music, especially Bluegrass and church Hymns. He could often be found with a guitar, banjo, or mandolin in hand, picking, strumming, humming, and singing along with the radio or his treasured collection of vinyl records and cassette tapes. He was a voracious reader of anything he could get his hands on: books, newspapers, magazines, pamphlets, and especially his Bible. He attended Bible studies faithfully, always eager to learn more about God, Jesus, and his own faith. He liked to putter in the garden, tinkered at building birdhouses, and collected model trains, especially electric ones. He was passionate about supporting underprivileged children through ministries all over the world, including several close to home. Gary enjoyed traveling to visit his children and grandchildren. Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Dorothy Nord, his Father- and Mother-in-Law Jacob and Aganetha Toews, and his precious daughter Teresa (Nord) Slaughter. He is survived by his beloved wife, Maria, their children Maureen (Garret) Karels and Kristina (Marshall) Keeling, son-in-law Jason Slaughter, his siblings Mark (Judy) Nord, Patricia (Dan) Vickerman, Nancy (Larry) Arendt, Allan (Cathy) Nord, grandchildren Cecelia, Emily, Beau, Van, Gavin, Vivian, Chloe, Meredith, Carson, and great granddaughter Lainey. A memorial service will be held Thursday, September 21, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the United Lutheran Church in Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 20th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Askew Funeral Home in Cavalier. Greg was born in Monango, ND to Frances and Richard Struma on June 11, 1940. After graduating from Fullerton High School in May of 1958, Greg enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served on the USS Southerland until his honorable discharge in May of 1962. He married Judith Ulmer on December 15, 1962. He worked for the Soo Line Railroad based out of Fullerton, ND until 1969, when he became a salesman for Schwans. In 1975, Greg and Judy moved to Cavalier where they resided until moving to Grand Forks in 2023. During Greg and Judy’s craft business years, he enjoyed visiting with the many people he met, making friends everywhere they went. He also loved taking pictures mainly of his grandchildren and Judy’s flowers. Greg will be forever remembered by his daughter, Jodi (Craig) Drengson, Reiles Acres, ND; grandchildren: Cassandra (Casey) Hobus, East Grand Forks, MN, Christopher (Vanessa) Lawonn, Cavalier, ND, Nicholas Lawonn (Larissa Kurpius-Brock), Grand Forks, ND, Rowan and Isabella Drengson, great-grandchildren: Masen, Rylee, Asher, Hallie, Sawyer, Aiden, Layla, and Henley. Gregory Richard Sturma, passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND, to be reunited with the love of his life, Judy. Edwin J. Heuchert passed away September 5, 2023 after a nine-month battle with cancer. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at United Lutheran Church in Cavalier, North Dakota. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 8, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the church, and one hour before the time of the service at the church. Edwin was born March 9, 1934, to John G. and Mathilda (Pfeifer) Heuchert at rural St. Thomas, ND. Edwin moved to the Cavalier area with his family in 1942. He attended country school and graduated from Cavalier High School in 1951. On June 22, 1957, he married Dolores Karel at the Neche Methodist Church. To this union, three daughters, Kathy, Karen, and Kristi, were born. Edwin farmed his entire life and worked for carpenters during the winter. After retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, helping others with field work, and especially spending holidays and birthdays with family. Edwin is survived by his wife, Dolores, of 66 years and daughters Kathy Guidinger of West Fargo, ND, Karen Heuchert of Eden Prairie, MN and Kristi (Ivan) Maas of Wahpeton, ND; grandchildren Marie (Dr. Brett) Milbrandt, Colin (fiancé Jana Beattie) Guidinger, Dexter (fiancé Nicole Crummy) Guidinger, Harrison (Lana) Maas, and Preston Maas; brother Larry (Ida) Heuchert; sister-in-law Donna Karel and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Lenora Sommer, brothers-in-law Laverne Sommer, and Richard Karel, and nephew David Heuchert.
