 Abe Toews, 81, of Walhalla, passed away on October 31, 2022, after a long battle with cancer and renal failure, at Valley Senior Living in Grand Forks, ND. Funeral service will be held Friday, November 11, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Assembly of God Church in Walhalla, ND. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.
Abe was born May 26, 1941, to Aganetha (Goertzen) and Jacob Toews of Altona, Manitoba. He grew up in the middle of a loving, hardworking, and faithful Mennonite family along with his 12 brothers and sisters. Working on the farm, being surrounded by family, and studying his Bible became an integral part of who he was. On October 6th, 1967, Abe married Ellen (Goulet) Toews and together they raised four kids here in Walhalla: Sheila, James, Darla & Jonathan. During his lifetime he spent most days farming or trucking, which is when he said he always felt the best. When he was home, he enjoyed spending time with his family, cooking, watching wrestling, and studying his Bible. Abe would say that he worked hard his whole life and had a good family, thanks be to God. His health issues started several years ago, but with the help of his family and some wonderful friends, Joe Mostad, Lance Jerome, & Tom Cook, he was able to stay independent. He was very proud to be able to continue working, driving himself to treatment and then going to work at Johnson Farms. This wouldn’t have been possible without Al and Sam Johnson, Duane Cluchie, Kip Jonasson, and several others, who accommodated his health restrictions. He was proud to say he had logged seven million miles during his career, and he stopped counting two years ago! When he wasn’t working, he was writing a book, which he was very excited about. He was very generous with his knowledge and acted as a mentor to those who needed guidance. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ellen, parents and siblings, Annie Bergen, Henry Toews, Trudy Toews, and Nettie Wheeler. He is survived by his siblings: Helen Wiebe, Elizabeth Brown, Maria Nord, Susan Dueck, Sarah Thiessen, Esther Ginter, Jake Toews, and Ben Toews, and his children: Sheila Forrey, James (Cathy) Jerome, Darla (Shawn) Jerome, and Jonathan Toews, and also his grandchildren: Jeff (Kim) Jerome, Suzanne (Jeff) Johnsen, Kasandra (Charles) Forrey, Robert (Alexa) Ducioame, Jesse (Laenee) Jerome, Nikki (Eric) Burt, Christopher (Emily) Storey, Brady (Jackie) Jerome, Jacob (Yancy) Toews, Piper and Gavyn Toews, and also his 21 great-grandchildren.

 Floyd R. McLeod, age 91, of Cavalier, ND, passed away Friday, October 28, 2022, at Wedgewood Manor in Cavalier. Funeral service will be held Saturday, November 5, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Lutheran Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held Friday, November 4th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Askew Funeral Home in Cavalier.
Floyd, son of Donald and Martha McLeod, was born in 1930 at Milton. He spent his early childhood on a farm in East Alma Township where he attended a rural school. The family moved to Milton in 1942. Floyd attended the Milton School and graduated in 1948. In the fall of 1948, he began teaching at the Tongue River School in the South Olga Township. He enrolled at Mayville Teachers College that summer and continued teaching during the winter and attending college during the summer. During the summer of 1951 he taught summer school in the Perry School District south of Langdon. In November of 1951 Floyd joined the United States Air Force. While in the Air Force he served as a tactical instructor in Texas and Florida. After his discharge from the Air Force, he returned to teaching at the Tongue River School and Easby. He continued his education at Valley City State College. Floyd graduated in 1958 and he accepted a teaching position in Fargo at Washington Elementary. In June of 1960, Floyd married Doreen Thomasson. While they lived in Fargo, three daughters were born: Michelle, Jolyn, and Kristi. In 1976, the family moved back to Milton, ND. Floyd taught fifth and sixth grades and was the elementary principal. He was an active member of the Eagleson-Meling Post 179. After retirement Floyd and Doreen moved to Cavalier, ND. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Doreen; daughers: Michelle (Bill) Waslaski, Jolyn (Wayne) Bergstrom, and Kristi Hertz; grandchildren: Matthew (Amanda) Savageau, Erin (Kevin) Koch, Tara (Matthew) Grams, Cassidy King, Nathan (Jessica) Waslaski, Morgan (Trevor) Smith, Mason Hertz, Floyd Althoff, and Miranda Hertz; great-grandchildren: Carson, Cayden, and Hazel Savageau; Logan, Eli, and Ivy Grams; Stella Koch; and Harrison Smith; sister, Jean Peebles; in-laws: Susan Thomasson, Robert (Denise) Thomasson, Irene McLeod King. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Fern and Elmer Schill, Dean and Doris McLeod, Robert McLeod; infant brothers: Kenneth and Gerald; son-in-law, Brent Hertz; grandson, Christopher Savageau; brothers-in-law: Fred Thomasson and Albert Peebles; and mother and father-in-law, Johann and Dorothy Thomasson.  Claudia Lorraine Contreras, age 35, of Ardoch, ND, passed away on Saturday, October 22, 2022 in Grand Forks, ND.
Claudia Lorraine was born on May 18, 1987 to Joann (Contreras) Sanchez. A happy and bubbly person, she moved from Ardoch to Grand Forks and Fargo and found her way back home to Ardoch. She worked a variety of jobs and was always attending school to better herself. Claudia was blessed with a large family. She was always willing to help out, cook food or just show up and show her support. She loved music and to demonstrate her dancing skills whenever she could. She will be missed dearly by her loved ones. Claudia is survived by her mother and stepfather: Joann (Contreras) and Ricardo Sanchez, sister Blossom Contreras, brother Felix Contreras, her aunts and uncles: Mary Grable, Linda Burnett, Gloria (John) Mozinski, Angie (Robert) Robledo, David (Christine) Contreras, and Melissa (Crystal) Nesdahl, as well as, many cousins. She is preceded in death by grandparents Pete and Eva Contreras, uncle Peter Contreras, and cousins Marcus Contreras and Barbara Burnett. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 at 2:00 P.M. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Minto. Kouba, age 88, resident of Michigan, ND, died Friday, October 21, 2022 at the Good Samaritan Society in Larimore, ND.
Daniel Edward Kouba was born December 20, 1933 on his mother’s family farm, in Sauter Township of Walsh County, ND, the son of Edward and Geneva (Bina) Kouba. He joined the U.S. Army in 1953 and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged and returned to operate the family farm. Daniel married Marjorie Elton on June 2, 1960 at St. Catherine Catholic Church, Lomice, rural Lawton, ND. Daniel was a lifelong farmer; farming was not just a job, it was his passion. The couple lived on the family farm for 40 years, where he and Margie worked side by side. Daniel loved to dance, play cards, and he enjoyed many trips to Las Vegas with Margie. They were excellent polka dancers and attended many dancing events. Daniel also owned and operated the Kouba Insurance Agency for 51 years. Margie died March 26, 2020, they would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary that year. After his retirement, Daniel enjoyed helping his son and grandsons on their farms. In addition to his passion for farming, Daniel was very civic minded. He served on several boards, including the Walsh County Mutual Insurance Company for 47 years, 37 of which he served as President. He also served as a Walsh County Commissioner, was a member of the American Legion, the Knights of Columbus, Perth School Board, Lankin Livestock Association, Harvest States Elevator in Whitman, NE Grain in Petersburg, ND State Association of Farm Mutual Insurance Companies, and he was a lifelong member of the WFLA/Kosobud Lodge. He served as President/Chairman on most boards. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Daniel will be missed by his 3 children, Lynn Kouba of Adams, ND, Kristi (Gary) Brintnell of Fordville, ND, and Cory (Patti) Kouba of Lankin, ND; grandchildren, Brian (girlfriend, Kelsey) Brintnell, Nathan (Breanna) Brintnell, Kaitlyn Brintnell, Madysen (fiancé, Spencer) Kouba, and McKenzie Kouba; great grandchildren, Levi Brintnell and Lauren Brintnell; step-grandchildren, Kayla, Courtney (Dan), and Derek (fiancé, Brittany); step-great grandchildren, Kinnley, Mila, and Everett; a brother, Edward (Janice) Kouba of Bismarck, ND; and a sister-in-law, Betty (Leroy) Stensland of Cavalier, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Marjorie. Robinson, 64, of Cavalier, ND passed away Thursday, October 20, 2022, at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital in Cavalier. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at the Walhalla Lutheran Church, Walhalla, ND. Visitation will be held Monday, October 24th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Askew Funeral Home, Walhalla, ND.
Nancy was born July 12, 1958, at Cavalier, ND, to Camden and Teola (Venne) Saylor. She grew up in Walhalla, ND, and attended Walhalla Public School. On July 15, 1974, Nancy married Dennis Robinson at the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Walhalla. Together Nancy and Dennis had two children, Jodi in 1974 and Kevin in 1978. Nancy enjoyed traveling in the US and Canada to watch her family chariot and chuckwagon race, fishing, 4-H, and watching her grandkids through the years at the Pembina County Fair. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and shopping with her sisters. She is survived by her husband, Dennis; daughter, Jodi Robinson, Cavalier, ND; son, Kevin (Tiffany) Robinson, Cavalier, ND; grandchildren: Jeffery, Jordan, Krista, Faith, Gracee, Ty, Kassidee, and Johnny; great-granddaughters, Sienna and Harley; siblings: Kathy (Bob) Hines, Margaret (Dean) Cudmore, Susan Saylor, Mary Lafferty, and twin sister, Tully (Stanley) Schweitzer; several nieces and nephews; and special great-nephews, Chase and Ryder. She was preceded in death by her parents; mother and father-in-law, Albert and Aurlie Robinson; sister-in-law, Thersea Robinson; brother-in-law, Terry Lafferty; and nephew, Daniel Schweitzer.  LaVoy R. Olson, age 90 of Hoople, ND passed away on Thursday, October 20, 2022 at the Park River Good Samaritan Center.
Orlann Ray LaVoy Olson was born to Oliver and Ruby (Almen) Olson on July 11, 1932, at the Deaconess Hospital in Grafton, ND. LaVoy was the eldest child and was raised with his sister and two brothers in Hoople. LaVoy graduated from Hoople High School in 1950. On November 1, 1953, he married Joyce (Fedje) Olson at First Lutheran Church of Hoople. LaVoy held various jobs after graduation including a school bus driver. He purchased and operated Hoople Standard with Raymond Johnson, during which time he was the local Standard Oil Company agent. He went on to open Olson Fuel and Fertilizer Company in 1962. In the 1970s he started farming with his brother, Jerry. He and his sons formed GLD farms in 1980. LaVoy had a love of being in the field; a passion he continued while driving tractor well into his 80s. LaVoy’s greatest joy was his family and friends. He loved spending time at the lake and winters in Arizona. The best part about being LaVoy’s family is that everyone who knew him has a story to share about his kindness. And as LaVoy would say, that’s pretty special. We celebrate a life well lived in the same church LaVoy was confirmed and married. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; his children: Doug (Alyson) Olson, Hoople, ND; Mark (Jill) Olson, Grafton, ND; daughter-in-law, Cindy Olson; 7 grandchildren: Laura (Brett) Brudvik, Jeff (Nicole) Olson, Jayme (Brady) Trenbeath, Bryan (Hali) Olson, Livia, Reese, and Elias Olson; 12 great-grandchildren; siblings: Jerry (Nadine) Olson and Joel (Peggy) Olson. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Gene Olson; sister, Echo (Ben) Bjertness; grandson, Kurt Olson; and an infant brother. Interment will be at the Hoople City Cemetery.  Arthur Wagner, 94, of Neche, ND, passed away October 19, 2022, at Pembilier Nursing Center in Walhalla, ND.
Art was born October 22, 1927, west of Neche, ND, at the home of his parents, Michael and Minna Wagner (Schmidtke). He received his education at the Duprey country school where he completed the eighth grade. On October 22, 1949, he was united in marriage to Virginia Hintz in Neche. For 72 years, they shared their life together on the original Wagner farm, working the land and raising livestock. Art loved the life of a farmer, working side by side with the love of his life, raising their four children, and growing the farm as the years passed until he retired in 2004. He is survived by his children: Richard, Louisville, KY, Randall (Marion), Neche, RaNelle Clow, Rapid City, SD, Roger (Linda), Neche. Grandchildren: Angela, Richard, Jr., and Jody; Stephanie, William, and Lisa; Jason and Denise; Ryan and Dustin. Step-grandchildren: Ron, Jr., Cindee, and Craig; 23 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, his parents, his sisters, Emma, Elsie, and Erna, his daughter-in-law, Betty Ann Wagner and son-in-law, Ron Clow. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 29, at 10:30 am at Cavalier Evangelical Free Church with burial at the Neche Lutheran Cemetery. Askew Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.  Ivan C. Goodoien was born on October 24th, 1931 near Devils Lake, ND to Pete and Mena
(Bakken) Goodoien. He attended school in Devils Lake, ND, Goodrich, MN and Hoople, ND into his teens. Following school he enlisted in the Air Force and spent time in a welding shop and working on the flight lines in Japan and Korea from 1951-1953. Over the years he worked at various shops and automobile dealerships in the region, including Skjerven’s Dodge dealership in Park River, ND and Solberg’s in Lakota. He married Gladys Evenson on May 19th, 1957 in Park River, ND. Ivan’s calm and easy-going personality was a perfect balance for his spunky wife Gladys; they made a wonderful pair. They originally made their home in Lakota and later moved to the Cavalier area, where Ivan operated a mechanic shop with his brother Herman. The I & H shop was built in 1965 and has long been the place to go if you needed any sort of mechanical work, or if you simply wanted to share a beverage and friendly visit about old cars or tractors. In 2020 Ivan moved out of his home and into the home of his great nephew Ryan Goodoien; however, he was still most at home sitting within the familiar walls and grease-covered floors of his shop. He continued to spend most of his days there until the day he passed. Ivan was peacefully called to his heavenly home on October 18th, 2022; just one week shy of his 91st birthday. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Gladys, brothers John, Tony, Herman and Parnell, and sister Phyllis. He is survived by several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews, notably his great nephew Ryan Goodoien (Shelbie) and his great-great nephew Oliver, whose home he shared for the past 2 years. Funeral service will be held Monday, October 24, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at the Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held Sunday, October 23rd from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Askew Funeral Home.  Dale was born on May 28, 1938, at North Carlisle Township to Cleora (Stratton) and John O’Hara. He grew up in Hamilton, ND and graduated from Hamilton High School in 1956. After high school he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served 4 years. Following his service in the Navy, Dale returned to Hamilton, ND where he married Sharon Keena. Dale and Sharon raised their 4 children in Cavalier, ND. Dale was employed by Gregory Ford, the Leonard Schwartz Farm, and eventually at Pembina County Memorial Hospital and Wedgewood Manor, where he was employed 32 years before his retirement in 2001. Following retirement, he worked for American Crystal Sugar Company and North Star Coop.
Dale served many years on the Pembina County Fair Board, Northern Valley Homes Board, and Pembina County Memorial Hospital and Foundation Board. He was also a volunteer with the Cavalier Ambulance service. Dale enjoyed curling, fishing, golfing, traveling and any sort of sporting events where he could cheer on his grandchildren. Dale is survived by his wife, Sharon (Keena); son, Jeffrey (Patricia); daughters, Lori (Terry), Janet (Scott), and Joan (Jarrett); and grandchildren Paige (Colby), Abbie (Dustin), Taylor (Dustin), Maggie, Maris, and Emmitt; and great-grandsons Cooper and Stratton. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Maxine (Marvin) McIntyre and Shirley Keena. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Preceding him in death were his parents, brother Thomas, sister Helen, sister and brother-in-law Audrey and Dale Rowe, brothers-in-law, Rodney Keena and Ray Keena, and sons-in-law, Ian Miller, and Stuart Swartz. Dale Stratton O’Hara, 84, passed away on October 17, 2022, at Maple Manor Care Center in Langdon, ND. Memorial service will be held Friday, October 21, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at United Lutheran Church, Cavalier, ND. Gloria Briese, 92, of Cavalier, ND, passed away Sunday, October 16, 2022, at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier, ND. Gloria was born February 7, 1930, at International Falls, MN, to Samuel and Gudrun (Johannesson) Samuelson. She grew up in Cavalier, ND and graduated from Cavalier High School. On July 9, 1949, she married Stanley Briese. After their marriage, they lived in rural St. Thomas and Hamilton, ND. She worked as a bank teller, a secretary at the Pembina County Extension Office, ran Granny’s Pantry Café, and was active in supporting the family farm. In 2018, Gloria moved to Country Estates in Cavalier. Gloria belonged to many organizations and held offices in all of them. She also served as the Mayor of Hamilton. She enjoyed sewing and quilting. She made a special jean quilt for each of her grandchildren. She is survived by her children: Pamela (Michael) Hollis, Green Cove Springs, FL; Susan (Bradley) Nelson, Cavalier, ND; Rochelle (Robert) DeFoe, Pembina, ND; Mark (Tami) Briese, St. Thomas, ND; Marilyn (Keith) Sagert, Neche, ND; and Danielle (Douglas) Olason, Hensel, ND; 20 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson; siblings: Robert (Diane) Samuelson, Marlene Teel, Jewell Matsuura, Richard (Sharon) Samuelson; and brother-in-law, Charles Watterson.
