 Rene P. Arnold, 70, of Cavalier, ND passed away Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at the Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND. surrounded by his loving family. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, November 4, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Brigid of Ireland Catholic Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held Sunday, November 3rd from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a 5:00 vigil service at the church. Burial will be held in the Hillside Cemetery, Walhalla, ND. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Faith in Action or the Pembina County Memorials Hospital Foundation.
Rene P. Arnold was born May 20, 1949 in Grafton, ND. to Raymond and Delima Arnold. He grew up and attended school in Cavalier, ND with his four siblings, Jeannie, Joe, Bob, and twin brother, Romaine. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1968, serving his country with valor for four years. He was trained both as a fireman and boiler operator at Fort Lee, Virginia. On April 22, 1978 he married Mildred Arnold in St. Paul, MN. They lived in Champlain, MN until 1983, when they moved back to Cavalier, ND. They lived in rural Backoo, ND where they had many adventures and made lasting memories with family and friends. Rene was employed by the Pembina County Memorial Hospital in Cavalier as a boiler operator for 30 plus years. Rene was a kind, gentle hearted person who enjoyed hunting, the great outdoors, muzzleloader hunting, making knives, leather working, old movies especially Westerns, old music and spending time with family celebrating birthdays and holidays. His kind smile and sense of humor were just a few of his many gifts. Rene is survived by a daughter, Sue (Clair) Longtin, Cavalier, ND; daughter-in-law, Joanne Hughes, Grand Forks, ND; son-in-law, Dick LeTexier, Cavalier, ND; sisters-in-law: Ellen Arnold, Grafton, ND and Linda Arnold, Minneapolis, MN; grandchildren: Marvin (Angela) Longtin, Cavalier, ND, Mike (Candis) Longtin, Devils Lake, ND, John (Lisa) Longtin, Umatilla, FL; Rick (Jill) Amundson, Baudette, MN, Pam Amundson LeTexier, East Grand Forks, MN. Cindy (Dave) Oldakowski, Ham Lake, MN, Jason (Stacy) Amundson, East Grand Forks, MN, Patty Amundson, Baudette, MN; James Hughes and Jeremy Hughes both of Roseau, MN and Jeanette (Nate) Wald, East Grand Forks, MN; 23 great-grandchildren; 12 great great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife of 35 years, who passed away October 22, 2013, Mildred Arnold; son, Jim Hughes; daughter, Patty Amundson LeTexier; son-in-law, Jerry Amundson; grandsons: Mark and Marty Longtin; sister, Jeannie; brothers: Joe, Bob, and twin brother, Romaine.

 Shirley R. Erickson, age 80 of Grafton and formerly of Hoople, ND passed away on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at the Lutheran Sunset Home of Grafton, ND.
Shirley R. Gehrls was born July 13, 1939 in Warren, MN the daughter of the late John and Clarice (Lean) Gehrls. She grew up and attended school there. Following her education she worked at Tillie’s Drive-Inn. Shirley married Gale Erickson on July 11, 1959 in Warren, MN. Shortly after their marriage Gale was called into military service. Shirley moved to Washington when Gale got assigned there. Following his discharge the couple moved back to Warren. They lived in Minnesota until 1973 when they moved to Cavalier, ND. In 1985 the couple moved to Hoople where they resided until Shirley moved to the Lutheran Sunset Home. She is survived by her husband, Gale of Grafton, ND; sons: Dale (Carol) Erickson, Manitoba, David (Teresa) Erickson, Grafton, ND; Danny (Julie) Erickson, Mandan, ND; Don Erickson, Alaska, Dennis (Violet) Erickson, Grand Forks, ND; 14 grandchildren, six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Shirley was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 2, 2019 at 2:30 PM at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton, ND. Visitation will be Saturday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Hoople City Cemetery, Hoople, ND.  Levina J. Meyers, age 65 of Grand Forks, ND passed away on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at her home in Grand Forks.
Levina Janice Hagen was born Feb. 25, 1954 in Grafton, ND the daughter of the late Clifford and Verna (Pettis) Hagen. She attended elementary school in Fordville. Her family moved to Freeport, IL when she was a small child and she graduated from High School there. She worked in café’s and as a sales clerk at K-Mart until her health forced her to retire. She moved to Grand Forks in May of 2019. Levina is survived by a half sister and half brother and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral Services will be Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at 2:00 PM at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Park River, ND. Visitation will be Wednesday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery, Rural Park River, ND.  G. Edward Karel, 83, of Walhalla, ND passed away Saturday, October 26, 2019 at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier, ND. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, October 31, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Boniface Catholic Church, Walhalla, ND. Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 30th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church. Burial will be held in the St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery.
George Edward Karel was born November 6, 1935 at Grafton, ND to John J. and Mary (O’Toole) Karel. He grew up in Walhalla and graduated from Walhalla High School. Edward then attended St. Thomas Academy and the University of North Dakota. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corp, he returned to U.N. D. where he received his Master Degree. Ed then returned to Walhalla where he worked in the family business. He owned and operated Karel’s Sales and Service. Edward’s military background promoted him to lead, serving as an Alderman and Mayor of Walhalla. He served on the board of directors for the Pembilier Nursing Center. Ed also served on numerous telephone boards at both regional and national levels. Many knew Edward for his passion of collecting guns and interest in hunting. On August 4, 1958, he married Rose Neldon at Groton, SD. He is survived by his wife, Rose; children: Stacie (Jim) Metelmann, Walhalla, ND, Terrie (Daniel) Johnson, Cooperstown, ND, Michael (Susan) Karel, Walhalla, ND; grandchildren: Ashley Crosby and Brittaney Metelmann; Shannon (Andy) Tvrdik and Darren Johnson; Reed, Rhett, and Dane Karel; great-grandson, Asher Crosby; and brother, Jack (Connie) Karel. Preceding him in death were his parents; infant daughter, Stephanie; twin granddaughters, Heidi and Holli Johnson; and sister-in-law, Lou Ann Karel.  Curtis S. Rose, age 53 of Grafton, ND passed away on Friday, October 25, 2019 at his home in Grafton.
Curtis Shawn Rose was born May 30, 1966 in Seattle, WA the son of Edward and Patti (Peterson) Rose. The family moved to Grafton where he attended school, graduating in 1984. He attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, MN. Following his education he worked as a foreman at Alchem, LTD; Reimer Welding, Granatus Consulting and was currently working as a boiler operator at the Life Skills and Transition Center. He was united in marriage to Jean Vejtasa in August of 1992. Curtis was known for his off the wall sense of humor. He loved to spend time with his daughters. He enjoyed playing softball, watching the MN Vikings, MN Twins and loved hockey. Curtis is survived by his daughters: Breanna (Cole) Haugland, Brocket, ND; Alexandra Rose, Grand Forks, ND; Jaden Rose, Park River, ND; his mother, Patti Rose, Grafton, ND; his sister, Tracey (Cory) Burns, Grafton, ND; the love of his life, Cherie Gage, Grafton, ND along with several aunts, uncles, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father Ed and maternal and paternal grandparents. Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at 1:00 PM at Grafton Lutheran Church. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery.  Alice Isabel Monson Carlson
Alice passed away on October 25, 2019 in her home in Park River, ND. She was born to Oswald and Esther (Hogfoss) Monson on February 28, 1936 in a sod house on the Monson family farmstead in Norton Township. Alice married Norman Carlson on June 19, 1953 at Hoff Lutheran church; they farmed until 2008 when they moved to Park River. Norman passed away on Jan. 29, 2011. Alice attended a one-room schoolhouse in the Hoff coulee with her siblings and earned her high school diploma as a Park River Aggie in 1953, and as an adult took classes at UND. Alice was a lifelong member of Hoff Lutheran, American Legion Auxiliary member and officer, a 4-H leader and loved dancing with Dad, bowling, bingo and traveling. Alice was so proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved making hot cross buns at Easter, Yulekake at Christmas, popcorn balls for Halloween and communion bread. Over the years Alice had a variety of jobs as farm wife, potato and beet truck driver, store and office jobs. Surviving Alice are her four children, Kaye (Gary Dub) Carlson, Grand Forks, Beth (Richard) Carlson, Grand Forks, Russel (Candace) Carlson, Lankin, Noreen (Jeff) Sievertson, Kingston, WA; grandchildren Eryn Hagadone, BryAnn Colquitt (DJ), Lucas Bina (Amber Flath), Brooke Bina (Brian Soderholm), Chris Carlson, Jared Carlson (Crissy), Jennifer Carlson, Wade Carlson (Lara), Jacob Carlson (Mykal), Katherine Olson (Ryan), Cassandra Broadwater (Josh), and Marcus Hagness; great-grandchildren Nikko Hagadone, Bowie Bina-Soderholm, Marcus Jay Carlson, Elle and Romann Carlson, Wyatt, Ryder and Cheyenne Carlson, Conrad Carlson, Noah and Jocelyn Olson, Owen, Charlotte and Nora Broadwater. Survivors also include sister, Jeanne Monson, Grafton, brother David (Lois) Monson, West Fargo; in-laws Judy Bondy, Fargo, Clair Kroke, Fargo, Shirley Carlson, Park River, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, three infant daughters Kari, Sylvia and Susan, brother, Ronnie Monson, sisters Mary Ann Daley and Ellen Carlson. Visitation will be held Friday from 5 to 7pm at the Tollefson Funeral Home in Park River, with the prayer service at 7:00pm. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 2nd at 10:30 A.M. at Hoff Lutheran Church in rural Adams. Friends may also call at the church on Saturday one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Hoff Lutheran Cemetery. Lunch will be served at the Lankin Legion following interment.  Dale Eugene Gemmill, age 96 of Edinburg, ND passed away on Thursday, October 24, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Care Center of Park River.
Dale was born October 3, 1923 in Edinburg, ND, the son of the late Herbert W. and Opal I. (Jensen) Gemmill. He married Leona Mae Odegard on March 26, 1951 in Hoople, ND. Dale and Leona established their household in rural Edinburg, ND where they resided until they sold their farmstead in 2005 and moved into Edinburg. They enjoyed 52 years of marriage until Leona passed on September 30, 2008. Dale continued to reside in Edinburg until 2018 when he moved into an independent living apartment at the Good Samaritan Center in Park River, ND. He moved into the Good Samaritan nursing home in October, 2019. Dale farmed with his brother Gene until he retired in 1988. He was active on many boards including the Edinburg Farmers Elevator, the Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department, the Good Samaritan Center, Odalen Lutheran Church, and Grace Free Lutheran Church. He volunteered for many years at the Park River Bible Camp and the Good Samaritan Center. Dale is survived by his sons: Larry (Nancy) Gemmill, Cohasset, MN; Randy (Susan) Gemmill, Edinburg, ND; Jeff (Debbie) Gemmill, Grand Rapids, MN; his daughter: Lynae (Mike) Nielsen, Mahtomedi, MN; five grandchildren: Nicole (Gemmill) Jehoich, Nathan Gemmill, Alicia (Gemmill) Gilbert, Eric Gemmill, and Kelly Gemmill; nine great grandchildren, and his only remaining sibling, Helen (Harold) Sundvor. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, his parents, brothers: Herbert Jr., Floyd, Gene, and Gordon; sisters: Suzanne and Rebecca (Gemmill) Ruud and grandson: Jay Dale Gemmill. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 28, 2019 at 10:00 AM at the Grace Free Lutheran Church of Edinburg. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Edinburg. Friends may also call at the church on Monday for one hour prior to the service. Robert “Baker Bob” Paulson, age 90 of Grafton, ND passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at his home. Bob was born May 28, 1929 to Paul and Julia (Rude) Paulson on the farm at Ada, MN. When he was 5 years of age, Paul sold the farm and moved to Fargo. Bob grew up there and went through school. He was drafted into the Army in 1948 in the 231st Engineers at Ft. Lewis WA and also Leaders Course School at Camp Roberts CA. He served two years in the US and two years overseas in the Army Engineers. Upon returning home, he attended the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton for Business Management. Following his education he went into the bakery business which he did for the rest of his life. He worked for Sweetheart, Red Owl, Hornbacher’s, Blacks Bakery and Wally’s Bakery in Grafton where he worked for 44 years. He was president of the North Dakota Baker Association for two years and had a Master Baker Degree. He was united in marriage to Betty Rinerson on June 6, 1954. They were married for 43 years and had two children: Janise (Ron) Dorman and Randy. He was united in marriage to Leona Wicks on October 24, 1998. He was a member of Grafton Lutheran Church and served on several committees. He liked fishing, bowling, playing golf, woodworking and his trains. He loved his wives, children and grandkids; whom he had a lot of good times with. Bob is survived by his wife Leona, Grafton, ND, daughter Janise (Ron) Dorman, stepchildren: Curtis Schiebe, Sandy Wilson, and Steve (Susan) Schiebe, brothers: Earl and Rudy Paulson, sister Patty Sall as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty, son Randy, step-son Dennis, sisters: Mildred and Lorraine and brothers: Vernon, Lester, and Merlyn. Funeral services will be Friday, October 25, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at the Grafton Lutheran Church of Grafton. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Military rites will be provided by the Grafton American Legion Post #41 and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard. Interment will be at the Grafton Lutheran Cemetery of Grafton.  Eleanor Wosick, age 95, of Grand Forks, ND died Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at Valley Senior Living in Grand Forks, surrounded by her six loving children and her sister, Mary Ann.
Eleanor Passa was born on April 26, 1924 on a farm in Ardoch Township in Walsh County, ND, the daughter of John and Agnes (Miller) Passa. She graduated from Oslo High School as valedictorian of her class in 1943 and then worked in California for a year making airplane parts for the war. Upon returning to North Dakota, she attended St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Grand Forks. On July 28, 1947 she was united in marriage to Richard John Wosick at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Warsaw, ND. After their marriage, they lived on a farm near Warsaw and in 1958 moved to Eleanor’s family farm in Walshville Township, ND where they continued to farm and raise their family. Eleanor resided in Grand Forks since Richard’s death in 1988. Eleanor was a great seamstress, cook, baker and always had a large garden and canned many vegetables for her family to enjoy. She also enjoyed crocheting afghans and, later, playing bingo on Sunday afternoons with her friends. Eleanor volunteered at Altru for more than 2,000 hours after moving to Grand Forks. She valued spending time with her grandchildren, always having homemade cookies ready for them and especially having the candy dish filled with her Candy Kisses! Eleanor is survived by sons, Arthur (Joane) Wosick, George (Dawn) Wosick, both of Warsaw, ND, Richard (Peggy) Wosick of Oslo, MN; daughters, JoAnn (Larry) Lessard of Grand Forks, ND, Judy (Thomas) Cochran of Las Vegas, NV and Mary Lou (Michael) Sweet of St. Paul, MN; 17 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. Also surviving are her sisters, Isabel Barrett of Long Beach, CA and Mary Ann Bushaw, who resides at Valley Senior Living in Grand Forks; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents John and Agnes Passa, husband Richard, sister Gertrude Gerszewski and husband Henry, brother Edward, three older siblings who died in early childhood, and brothers-in-law Douglas Barrett and Arthur Bushaw. The family would like to thank Eleanor’s caregivers at Valley Senior Living for the patient and loving kindness and care they always provided to their mother. Larson, age 93 of Park River, ND passed away on Sunday, October 20, 2019 at First Care Health Center of Park River.
Gene Lloyd Larson was born September 4, 1926 on the home farmstead in Kensington Township, Walsh County, ND the son of the late Enoch and Pauline (Kjos) Larson. He attended rural Kensington Township schools and graduated from the Walsh County Agricultural School in Park River. Gene served in the Armed Forces from 1946-1947. He was united in marriage to Ruth Loftsgard on June 29, 1949 in Bagley, MN. After their marriage, they farmed the family farm near Warren, MN and later Park River, ND. Gene was also in partnership with his brother, Neil, operating E. Larson & Sons Trucking and a potato wash plant until the 1980's. He was a member of Park Center Lutheran Church of rural Hoople and later Victory Free Lutheran Church in Park River. Gene enjoyed visiting with friends and strangers alike sharing stories of life especially trucking stories. He was proud of the fact that he managed to convince many of his nephews to give trucking a try at one point or another. Faith and family were very important to Gene. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, and attending their many school and sporting events. He was a kind and caring grandpa especially so to his special needs grandson, Jesse. Gene is survived by his brother, Neil Larson, Park River, ND; sons: Stephen (Dena) Larson, Park River, ND; Dwight (Shane) Larson, Park River, ND; grandchildren: Christian (Ashley) Larson, Andrea Larson, Shannon (Jon) Markusen, Joshua Larson, Jacob (Savannah) Larson; great grandchildren: Josie, Elias, Emma, Sophia, Hadley, Beau, Brody, and Brooke; sister-in-law, Eleanore Alexander; several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, parents, grandson, Jesse Larson and several brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-laws. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 26, 2019 at 10:30 A.M. at the Victory Free Lutheran Church of Park River.
