![]() Rowena Jean Markel, 78, of St. Thomas, ND passed away Saturday, February 18, 2023, at Pembina County Memorial Hospital. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Askew Funeral Home in Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held one hour before the time of the service at the funeral home. Jean (Skaro) Markel was born January 17, 1945 in Osnabrock, ND, the daughter of Martin and Rowena Skaro. She grew up in Inkster, ND where she attended school. On September 3, 1963, she married Albert Markel in Hoople, ND. After their marriage, Albert and Jean lived and farmed in the St. Thomas area. Jean worked at Wedgewood Manor, Pembina County Memorial Hospital, and Motor Coach Industries throughout the years. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, sewing, and playing Skip-Bo. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy. Jean is survived by her husband, Albert; sons, Chad Markel of Crystal, ND, Andy Markel and Douglas Markel, both of St. Thomas, ND; grandchildren, Sheiana and Tayden; siblings, Betty Riske, of Bismarck, ND, and Donna Slotto, of Cavalier, ND; half-sister, Debbie Knutson; half-brothers, Loren and Larry Erickson; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Thomas, Harvey, Kenny, Floyd, and Ronald; sisters, Dorothy, Ellen, Joyce, and Roberta; half-brother, Gary Erickson, and birth mother, Alice.

![]() Thomas Joseph Hermann was born October 9, 1961 to Andrew and Rose (Brunelle) Hermann in Georgetown, MN. Tom was committed to helping their family farm while he was growing up. This continued throughout his life, as he was always willing to lend a helping hand. Tom graduated from Moorhead High School in 1980. After graduation he went to Moorhead Tech for 2 years, then decided to go to NDSU where he graduated with and agricultural degree. Following his graduation he moved North and took a job with American Crystal Sugar. Tom loved working with sugar beets and all of his coworkers and growers. After working for 30 years with Crystal Sugar he retired in 2020. Tom was a member of the St. Thomas Catholic Church and was very active with the St. Thomas Fire Department. He was well known for his cooking and great sense of humor. Tom enjoyed fishing, hunting, and cooking for his daughter, granddaughter, or any other family and friends. Tom also loved holding and talking about his new granddaughter Maizy. Tom passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at the Altru Hospital in Grand Forks at the age of 61. Although Tom’s time here on earth was not nearly long enough, our lives are richer and more blessed because he shared his love and friendship with all. Tom is survived by his daughter Janessa (Wade) Halvorson, Oakwood, ND; granddaughter Maizy Halvorson; his beloved granddog Izzy; siblings: Jerome (Linda) Hermann, Michael (Sheila) Hermann, Charlie (Sherry) Hermann, Bill (Mary) Hermann, Richard (Lisa) Hermann, Mary (Ernest) Normandin, Barb (Mark) Thompson, Patricia Audette, Jean (Deon) Walton; along with many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. ![]() John Kenneth Skaro, 91, long-time Hoople resident, passed away peacefully Tuesday February 14, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Center in Park River. Memorial service will be held Friday, February 17, 2023, at 11:30 a.m. at the Askew Funeral Home in Cavalier. Visitation will be held for one hour before the time of the service at the funeral home. An inurnment will be later this summer at the Vidalin Lutheran Church, rural Hensel. Any memorials should be directed to Hoople Ambulance Service John was born on August 1, 1931, near Elfros, Saskatchewan to Emily Horgdal Skaro and Oscar Skaro. The family moved to the Hensel area and then to a farm outside Hoople when John was in fourth grade. John graduated from Hoople High School in 1950 and went on to graduate with a teaching degree from Moorhead College in 1958. John married Lois Neilson of Hoople on July 4th, 1954. They had two children, Toni and Tom, while living in Arthur and eventually back on the farm near Hoople. They divorced in 1972. John later married Louise Ross in July 1975, moving to Cavalier at that time. They had a daughter, Kris. John and Louise later divorced but remained close friends through the years. John spent a few years farming before returning to his calling of teaching and coaching. He worked in schools in Arthur, Hoople and Cavalier, teaching history and current events while coaching most every sport. He was an avid Twins and Vikings fan, and always loved class B and NCAA basketball. John was a proud grandpa and loved bragging about his six grandchildren. He was also excited to become a great-grandfather, decorating his room with family pictures. He liked to talk about his Icelandic heritage, and thoroughly enjoyed teasing and joking with people around him. John was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Fred and Alfreda Shrader, first wife, Lois Neilson Olson. He will be missed by his children: Toni (Richard) Powell; Tom (Barb) Skaro; and Kris (Jason) Specht; ex-wife Louise Ross, six grandchildren: Anna, Matthew, Abby, Zachary, Sydney and Oscar; One great granddaughter, Penelope. Dunnigan, 97, of Walhalla, ND, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at the Pembilier Nursing Center in Walhalla. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, February 20, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Boniface Catholic Church, Walhalla, ND. Visitation will be held Sunday, February 19, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with a 6:00 p.m. vigil service at the church. Rita was born August 31, 1925, to Joseph and Mae (Schneider) Fischer near Mount Carmel, ND. Growing up as the oldest of nine children, she developed her mothering skills at an early age. She attended school at Maida, ND. On June 18, 1951, Rita married Raymond E. Dunnigan at Mt. Carmel. They lived and farmed in the Beaulieu area, where they raised seven children, fully testing her mothering skills. Rita helped establish and was a leader for the area 4-H club. She was also a member of the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church in Olga where she served on the Altar Society and taught religious education. She was a woman of strong faith, and after moving into Walhalla in 1992, was able to attend daily Mass. Rita always had a rosary handy, and in her later years was often seen holding her rosary while walking the halls at Pembilier Nursing Center. She also enjoyed baking, gardening, and sewing. She is survived by her children: Debbie Hudson, Rolla, ND; Nancy Dunnigan (Dave Koehser) Minneapolis, MN; Mary Saxowsky, West Fargo, ND; Shirley Breimeier, Beulah, ND; Edgar (Deanne) Dunnigan, Mcville, ND; daughters-in-law: Linda Dunnigan, Minto, ND; and Bev Dunnigan, Walhalla, ND; 19 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; siblings: Dorothy Soeby, Joe (Sharron) Fischer, Mary Werner, and Randy (Penny) Fischer. Stegman, 89, of Breckenridge, MN, formerly of Cavalier, ND, passed away Monday, February 13, 2023, at Twin Town Villa in Breckenridge. Mabel was born March 11, 1933, to Norris and Elva (Dalzell) Berg in Walhalla, ND. She grew up in Walhalla and graduated from Walhalla High School. On July 27, 1951, Mabel married Russell Stegman in Walhalla. After their marriage they lived and farmed in the Cavalier area, and for the past six years Mabel resided at Twin Town Villa in Breckenridge, MN. Mabel was involved in many community and church activities. She enjoyed gardening and flowers. Mabel is survived by her children: Gwen Tagliabue, Susan Spiedel, Mark Stegman, and Gary (Kris) Stegman; son-in-law, Curtis Hartje; grandchildren: Coy (Rachal) and Jedediah (Erin); Jennifer (Jeremy); Trisha (Kent) and Rachael (Steve); Joel (Julie), Erin (Matthew), Katelyn, and Kyle; great-grandchildren: Devin and Ella; Roman, Atticus, and Emmaline; Kadence, Gryffen, and Gracelynn; Aiden and Cole; and Joie. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Russell; children: David and Audrey; son-in-law, Dale Spiedel; brothers, Ivan and Glen Berg; and sister, Vivian Carpenter. ![]() Apalona T. Kiser, age 102 of Park River, North Dakota, formerly of Hoople, ND passed away peacefully Friday February 10, 2023 at the Park River Good Samaritan Center. Apalona was born on April 24, 1920 in Wimbledon, ND, the daughter of William and Elinor (Hurtt) Schaetzel. She moved with her family to a farm near Hoople in 1924. She was confirmed in the Hoople Methodist Church and graduated from Hoople High School in 1938. She worked at home on the farm for a year before attending Fletcher College in University Park, Iowa for one year. She attended the Bismarck Evangelical Hospital School of Nursing, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1943. She was a nurse in Los Angeles, California for a time but heard nurses were needed for the World War II effort. She volunteered and became an army nurse with the rank of Second Lieutenant, and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre for the rest of the war and following period. In Korea, she met her future husband, Donald L. Kiser from Urbana, Ohio. After the war she worked in Denver, Colorado, Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Connecticut. She married Donald on December 29, 1948 in the family farmhouse near Hoople. Donald and Apalona worked part time in Ohio and part time on the farm until 1956, when they settled in North Dakota to farm full time. The couple had two children, Michael and Susan. Donald passed away in 2006 and Apalona moved to Park River. She entered the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Park River in 2015 and remained there for the rest of her life. She was blessed that her sister was also a resident of the Good Sam Home for many years, and her daughter, Susan, was a nurse there. Apalona very much loved flowers, trees, and the beautifying and maintaining of outdoor spaces, especially the family farm. She was a quiet person who was devoted to her family with whom she remained very close over the years including frequent phones calls with her son, daughter, and grandson. She was a hard worker on the farm and possessed a lot of “old school” skills of her time. She was an avid reader of all things educational, and often got caught by her parents for reading under her bed covers so the light wouldn’t give her away when she was supposed to be sleeping. Apalona was ahead of her time with her knowledge and use of nutrition and healthy living. She was a wonderful cook and gardener and was always concocting healthy meals and snacks for her family, including sending regular care packages to her grandson. She was an expert on restoring and refinishing old furniture and also enjoyed other crafts such as China painting. She was active in the Hoople Methodist Church and various community clubs over the years. She was thought to be the oldest living WWII veteran in the area at the time of her death. Apalona is survived by her son Michael (Myrna) Kiser, Ada, Minnesota, grandson, Camden O’Toole (fiancée, Melissa Byone), Honolulu, Hawaii and son-in-law Tim Johnson, Park River. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald L. Kiser, daughter, Susan Johnson, parents, William and Elinor Schaetzel, brother, Phillip Schaetzel, sister, Dorothy Doktor, and brother-in-law Walter Doktor. Susan preceded her mother in death by only 13 days. A memorial service is planned for 2:00 PM at the Good Samaritan Center in Park River, ND on Thursday, Feb 16. Burial is planned for the spring in the Hoople City Cemetery. The family requests that any Memorials be made to the Good Samaritan Foundation located in Park River, ND. ![]() Mary M. Blair, 68, of Neche, ND passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital in Cavalier, ND. Memorial service will be held Saturday, February 11, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Bathgate Presbyterian Church, Bathgate, ND. Visitation at the church for one hour before the time of service on Saturday. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Faith in Action or the Pembina County Memorial Hospital Foundation. Mary was born July 27, 1954, at Red Lake Falls, Minnesota to Elroy and Mae (Lunak) Lien She spent her early years as well as some of her adult life in Grand Forks, ND. Mary and Elwood were united in Marriage on August 14th, 1993. Since that day, they had many adventures together that made life together both fun and exciting. Mary loved her family dearly, and especially adored her grandchildren. Mary enjoyed cooking for Elwood and entertaining her friends. She was very social and knew how to liven up any room she was in. She enjoyed listening to music and dancing any chance she had. Mary and Elwood loved to ride motorcycles and ventured to Sturgis a few times which Mary loved! Above all, Mary had a deep faith. She had a loving relationship with our Lord, and knew she was on to a better place after her life on earth was over. She will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her. Survivors include her husband, Elwood, son Robert III (Lynn) Housel, her grandchildren, and siblings: Ronald, Judy, Bruce, Jeannie, Caryol, and Richard. Also surviving are her brother and sisters-in-law, Robert (Jean) Blair and Dolores Blair. Preceding her in death were her parents, son, Thomas Housel, siblings: Rodney, Lynne, Sandra, Bradley, and Cheryl, brother-in-law, Terry Blair. ![]() Marlys Mary Miller, 89, of Minto, ND, passed away on the early morning of February 1, 2023, at Valley Senior Living, Grand Forks ND, where she resided since June 2021. Marlys was born on October 10th, 1933, in Grafton, ND. She was the oldest child of John C., Sr. and Agnes S. (Kadlec) Peterka. Marlys attended grade school at St. Alphonse Academy in Oakwood, ND and graduated from Grafton High School in 1951. At age 17, she was crowned Grafton Days Queen. Following high school, she moved to Fargo, ND where she worked as an operator at Bell Telephone Company. Marlys first laid eyes on her future husband of 57 years when he returned home from the Korean Conflict in 1954. Marlys and John D. Miller Sr. were married on September 1, 1956, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Grafton, ND. The couple lived on the Miller family farm near Forest River, ND, before moving to CA. Soon after, they moved back to North Dakota and called Minto “home”. Marlys was a devout Catholic, whose faith and devotion to the Blessed Mother was a part of her daily life. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Altar Society and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a leader of the local 4H Club for some time. Marlys loved spending time in her flower gardens, bird watching and baking. Her oatmeal cookies were often a family request along with her potato and shrimp salads. She enjoyed playing cards and working on puzzles, especially with her grandkids. She never passed up a Dairy Queen when the opportunity arose. She loved traveling to AZ with J.D. during the winter months. Marlys is survived by her children: Connie (Dan) Syrup, Grand Forks, ND; Kelly (Brian) Schanilec, Forest River, ND; John (Dawn) Miller, Jr., Minto, ND; Mary (Brian) Schuster, Minto, ND; Anthony (Kimberly) Miller, Grand Forks, ND; Katie (Gerard) Marino, Boston, MA; brother John (Bunnie) Peterka Jr., Veseleyville, ND; brothers-in-law Patrick Murphy, Springdale, AK and James (Jim) Miller of Ontario, CA., 32 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
