Jane Gertrude Jimenez, age 78 of Plymouth, Minnesota, formerly of Grafton, North Dakota passed away Friday, January 12, 2024 at the Methodist Hospital, St. Louis Park, MN.
Jane was born November 15, 1945 in Laredo, Texas, the daughter of the late Juan and Antonia (Sanchez) Jimenez. She worked on multiple farms throughout her childhood and younger years. At the age of ten, she was picking cotton with her family in northern Texas. In addition to that, she harvested cucumbers in Wisconsin, corn in Nebraska, and potatoes and beets in North Dakota. She continued working in the fields after graduating high school, but then took on the duties of cooking meals for her family and caring for her family’s home alongside her mother. She became an excellent cook, and her extended family always looked forward to her excellent holiday meals. Jane’s hobbies and interests included cooking, sewing, reading, writing, singing and listening to music, both English and Spanish, especially Tex-Mex, Rock ‘n’ Roll and country. She also loved dancing, telling jokes, and watching action movies throughout her entire life. Despite working hard from a very young age, Jane was a very positive person who loved to laugh, tell jokes, sing and dance. Jane is survived by her sister, Nickie Jimenez, brother, Joe Jimenez and her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Juan and Antonia Jimenez, sisters: Connie and Maria Jimenez and brother George Jimenez. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, April 27, 2024 at 10:30 A.M. at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Grafton, ND. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Grafton, ND.

Mary Kavli, age 74, of Dahlen, ND, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 23, 2024 in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks. Mary was born to Herbert and Edna Dahlen on December 17, 1949. On May 2, 1969, she married Richard Kavli. After spending many years, spending time on her new family, she finally graduated from Moorhead State University in 1990 with a degree in accounting. She was always crafting of some sort. Whether it was needle working, macramé, sewing clothing for her children, or in later years quilting many a quilt for people. She is preceded in death by both of her parents, brother James, and sister Barbara. She is survived by husband Richard, sisters, Janet Stock, Joanne (Ron) Kavli, Susan (John) Lapsitis, and brother Randy (Peggy) Dahlen, three daughters, Tammy (James) Wilds, Kathryn Merry (Lance Nielsen), and Alicia (Nathan) Grams, and many grandchildren. Services will be held Thursday, June 13, 2024 at 1 p.m. in the Dahlen Lutheran Church, Dahlen, ND. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Middle Forest River Cemetery, rural Dahlen. Joseph "Joe" Carik, 83, of Cavalier, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2024 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Brigid of Ireland Catholic Church in Cavalier. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Askew Funeral Home in Cavalier. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the St. Brigid of Ireland Catholic Church. Joseph Keith Carik, Jr. was born May 11, 1940 at Svold, ND to Joseph and Lena (Rousseau) Carik. Joe graduated from Cavalier High School in 1958. He worked at the Cavalier Elevator, Mayo Construction, Solar Gas, and the State of North Dakota and Pembina County Highway Departments. Joe also worked for Aaland and Robbins Farms, for Bill Lage and Carik Bros. Family and faith were a very important part of his life, especially the events his children and grandchildren were involved in. His grandchildren described him as their “Best Friend.” “Joe was a pied-piper” with animals, they all loved him. Other things he enjoyed were western music, sports, and antique farm equipment. Every meal had the Catholic Blessing followed by “We thank you Lord, for family and friends and neighbors” and he did this sincerely every day. On December 27, 1958, Joe married Deanna “DeeDee” Ault in Cavalier. He is survived by his children: Jodi and Scott Becker, Lori and Tim Sayler, Jay Carik and Sue Anderson, Robert “Bobby” and Marianne Carik, grandchildren: Amanda (Becker) and Daniel El-Dweek, David and Julia Sayler, Patrick Sayler, Ashlyn (Carik) and Colin Trottier, J.J. Carik, Christine Sayler, and Adam Sayler, Cadence Nantt, and Joshua Nantt, great-grandson, Sage Goodwin. Also surviving are his siblings: Alice Perpich, Walter Carik, Patrick Carik, Charlie (Lana) Carik, and his furry companion, Ella. Preceding him in death were his wife, DeeDee, parents, Joseph and Lena, stepfather, Edwin Nelson, sister, Mary Lehnert, brother-in-law, Robert Perpich and sister-in-law, Vicky Carik. Charles A. Bjerke, 87, of Cavalier, ND passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2024 at the Pembilier Nursing Center in Walhalla, ND. Funeral service will be Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the Trinity Methodist Church in Cavalier. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour before the time of services. Charles was born April 10, 1937 in Cavalier, ND to Carl and Olga (Stromstad) Bjerke. He grew up on a farm south of Cavalier with three sisters. At a young age he ran a tractor for the neighbor’s potato harvest. Charles graduated from Cavalier High School in 1955. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1960. After his discharge from the service, he returned home and farmed with his dad for many years, along with doing carpentry work. After he was done farming, he kept busy doing yard work for people for several years. Charles was so very kind and hardworking. He knew many people and enjoyed visiting with them. He was able to travel to Norway a few times to visit family, which was so important to him. Charles had several family gatherings over the years at his farm before moving to town. He was the best Uncle anyone could have. He was so good to his nieces and nephews and loved them very much. He is survived by his sister, Odella Dalzell, Walhalla, ND, brother-in-law, Wes Thomas, Ada, MN, 13 nieces and nephews, and many great nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, sisters: Clarice Dahl and Audrey Thomas, and brothers-in-law: Kenny Dahl and Clifford Dazell. Karl Julius Henschel, 89, of Bathgate, ND passed away Friday, April 12, 2024, at Pembina County Memorial Hospital in Cavalier, ND. Funeral service will be held Thursday, April 18, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Lutheran Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 17, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Askew Funeral Home in Cavalier. Karl Julius Henschel was born the last of 10 children to Julius and Juliane (Drager) Henschel on May 15,1934 in Hallson, ND. He attended country school there for several years. His family moved to Carlisle Township where his parents farmed, and he continued his education at Carlisle #9. Dad was awarded for his perfect attendance during his 7th grade year and graduated from 8th grade at the City Auditorium in Cavalier on June 15, 1948. Karl worked on the farm with his family until joining the U. S. Army in 1956. He served actively in Germany until 1961 as an engineer equipment repairman and was transferred to standby reserve in August of 1961. Dad was decorated with the Good Conduct Medal and presented with the Sharpshooter Badge (Carbine) and Sharpshooter Badge (Rifle) during his tenure. He was honorably discharged in April of 1964. Dad married Mom, Deloris Jean Saiger, on October 6th of 1961 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Grand Forks. They moved to the Bathgate area in 1962. Dad was farming, and they spent the winters in Grand Forks from 1964-1967. Dad worked at the potato house, various gas stations, and Rydell’s. In 1968, they built a house on Mom’s parents’ farm east of Bathgate that still stands today. They became members of Christ Lutheran Church in Neche. Dad started farming on his own in the Bathgate and Carlisle areas until 1992. In 1969, he began working winters at Motor Coach Industries until retiring in 1999. Dad spent a brief period of time working in the warehouse and truck at Happy Harry’s in Pembina, and enjoyed driving beet truck in Bathgate for McColl Farms. After Kelly, Karla, and Karmen were born, the folks stayed in the Bathgate area to live and work. Dad and Mom enjoyed playing cards with relatives in Cavalier and weekly games of Smear, the game of choice, were held at Reiny’s Bar in Bathgate. When Mom passed away in June of 2023, Dad was a resident at Wedgewood Manor in Cavalier until his death. Karl is survived by Kelly (Jayme) Henschel, Pembina, ND, Karla (Amy) Henschel, Bathgate, ND, Karmen Ruffatto, Columbus, MT, Deb Henschel, Vergas, MN, Jeff Ruffatto, Columbus, MT; his grandchildren Kassondra (Darren) Henschel, Vergas, MN, Megan (Justin) Tweeton, Perham, Joanna (Chandler) Wickham, Billings, MT, Kari Ruffatto, Columbus, MT, Laightyn Henschel, Mesa, AZ; great- grandchildren Charlie and Millie Graten; and sister Ruth Tully, Bismarck, ND, and sister-in-law Hattie Henschel, Grafton, ND. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Preceding Karl in death were his parents, wife Deloris, 5 brothers, and 4 sisters. Orville Jesse Aune, age 82 of Park River, ND passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at his home. In loving memory of Orville Jesse Aune of Park River, ND. Orville was born April 27, 1941 at the Aune homestead family farm home in rural Fairdale, ND to Edward and Wilma (Berntson) Aune. Orville attended Township School District #81 up till 6th Grade. He was the last class until the school closed. He then went to Fairdale Public School to finish elementary school. He later enrolled at Fairdale High School. He graduated from Fairdale High School in 1960. He attended the State School of Science in Wahpeton, ND graduating with a degree in General Mechanics and Welding in 1962. He married Judith Ann Kemp in Hamilton, ND on April 8, 1966. He farmed the homestead family farm for 20 years raising cattle, hogs, and small grains and sunflowers. After which he was employed at Farmers Shipping and Supply in Edmore, ND for 8 years. He then worked for Cenex Fertilizer plant, later called North Star Coop as a floater operator in Park River for 23 years until retiring. In later years he worked for Borgeson Farms in harvest, Mark and Charles Novak for fall tillage and Johnson Potato wash plant. He also drove school bus part time for 2 years, and then full time for 2 years until health issues required him to retire. He was active in his community which included: 4-H leader for several years, President of the Walsh County Crop Improvement Association, President of the Park River Aggies Boosters Club, which he was a member of until present, church councils at Hitterdal Lutheran Church of Rural Milton, ND, Mountain Lutheran Church of Adams, ND and later Victory Free Lutheran Church of Park River, ND. Orville was an avid sports fan, following his children and grandchildren when he could. The Park River Aggie football, basketball, and baseball were his pride and joy. He enjoyed supporting the Minnesota Vikings and UND Fighting Hawks. He also enjoyed having coffee with his friends and couples breakfast once a week. Orville is survived by his wife Judith of 58 years; children: Melanie (Johnny) Armstrong, Stamford, CT, Mark (Lynette) Aune, Thief River Falls, MN, Dale (Jen) Aune, Bellingham, WA, Danelle Aune, Stamford, CT; grandchildren: Jared Eng, Gunnar Aune, Alexis Armstrong, Megan Armstrong, Connor Armstrong, Aiden Aune, and Indigo Aune; siblings: Pearl Aune and Lorraine Aune; in-laws: Richard (Karen) Kemp, Pat Kemp, Rodger (Diane) Kemp, Daniel (Kaaren) Kemp, and Patty (Carson) Martin. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers in infancy: Orville Dennis and Jesse Arnold; brothers: Walter Aune, Melvin Aune, and Floyd Aune, two sisters: Elda Watt, LaVerne Stone and in-laws: Paul Aune, Ronald Watt, Edwin Stone and James Kemp. Gail Marie Kartes, age 66, passed away peacefully on April 4th, 2024. Gail M. Kartes, 66 of Edinburg, ND passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2024, at First Care Health Center in Park River, ND. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Walhalla Lutheran Church in Walhalla, ND. A visitation will be held on Friday, April 12, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Askew Funeral Home in Cavalier. Gail was born in Langdon, ND on June 6th,1957 to Carl and Ivy Kartes. She grew up on the farm loving what the country life has to offer. Gail's hands were rarely still unless holding one of her precious grandchildren. Some things she enjoyed staying busy with were spending time with loved ones, gardening, baking, canning, and quilting. Gail loved going to birthday parties, school events, and sporting events to support her grandchildren. She poured her heart into everything she did and you could taste it in every pie and feel it in every embrace. She worked at the Park River Vet Clinic for a number of years. Following that, she worked at the First Care Health Clinic in Park River, ND for over 20 years. It suited her servant's heart. At the clinic and within the community, she gained many friends and touched the lives of many people. There wasn't a place she could go to without running into "an old friend". Gail is survived and is whole-heartedly missed by her fiancé, Guy Johnson; sons, Jeremy (Kelly) Kartes, Tyrel (Kristan) Ellingson, Logan (Beth) Ellingson; stepdaughter Leah (Stacy) Staven; grandchildren, Chris, Steven, Caleb, Tripp, Rose, Josephine, Michael, Evan, Ben, Sierra, Selena, Andy, Nick, Jesse, Jackson, Jaxon, Landon, Zach, and great-grandchild; Max, mother, Ivy Kartes; siblings, Doris (Donn) Hancock, Chuck (Suzy) Kartes, Carla Kartes; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death and welcomed into heaven by her father, Carl Kartes; brother, Dan Kartes; and stepson, Travis Johnson. Betty Lesher, 96, of Cavalier, ND, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2024, at Lilac Homes Memory Care, Dilworth, MN. All are welcome to attend the Celebration of Life service on April 13, 2024, at 1:00 pm at the Trinity Methodist Church in Cavalier, ND. She will be laid to rest at Oaklawn Cemetery, Concrete, ND. She was a wonderful woman with a beautiful smile and was loved by all. Beatrice (Betty) Yvonne Carlson was born on October 2, 1927, to Harry and Alpha (Olson) Carlson in Walhalla, ND upstairs at Dr. Landry’s home. She grew up and attended a one-room country school in Concrete, ND. She babysat and worked for room and board while going to High School in Cavalier, ND. She worked in the Auditor’s office and the Register of Deeds in the Pembina County Courthouse. June 13, 1948, she married Harry Barclay Lesher Jr. at the Concrete Methodist Church. They had 4 children: Lee, Peggy, Ruth, and Tammy. Harry and Betty lived and farmed near Concrete for nearly 50 years where they raised their children. Betty taught Sunday school, was in Ladies Aid, and played the piano at the Concrete Methodist Church. She enjoyed puzzling in the winter months. She found a creative way to dry her hair in the summer months: you knew what she was doing when she climbed on the 3-wheeler in curlers. Betty and Harry both loved their family, friends, dancing, hosting summer parties, going to horse shows, the fair, sharing coffee and homemade goodies with family and friends. They traveled the world visiting family and friends. Betty frequently said, “Family is everything to me.” Betty and Harry moved from the farm to Cavalier in 2000. Betty was active in Dorcas Circle and LRE at the Cavalier Methodist church. After enjoying 55 years of marriage together, her dance partner passed in August of 2003. She is survived by her children: Lee (Gloria) Lesher, Peyton, CO; Peggy (Gary) Lepire, Walhalla, ND/Mesa, AZ; Ruth (Dan) Knoblich, Dent, MN; Tammy Lesher; grandchildren: Todd (Jess) Lesher, Scott Lesher, Tanya (Dan) Ehler, Cassandra (Tom) Kraus, Katie (Chris) Swailes, Justin Knoblich, Laura (Nathan) George, Brian Shetley; and 11 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her husband: Harry Lesher; parents: Harry and Alpha (Olson) Carlson; siblings: Alan Carlson, Don Carlson, and Doris Otto; son-in-law: Dan Shetley; and grandson: Christopher Lepire.
