 Garnett Eddington, 77, of Cavalier, ND, passed away Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND. Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 5, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND.
Garnett was born March 29, 1946, to Lester and Millicent (Webb) Eddington. He grew up in the Cavalier area and graduated from Cavalier High School. Garnett was drafted into the United States Army serving in Vietnam. On September 23, 1967, he married Nancy Moritz in Cavalier. After his discharge from the Army, Garnett went on to work for U.S. Border Patrol retiring in 2003. Garnett enjoyed traveling, especially spending the winter months down south and summers at the lake cabin. He also enjoyed water sports, four-wheeling, collecting antiques, and spending time with family. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; children: Gretta (Ron) Ohmann, Pembina, ND, and Jeremy Eddington, Custer, SD; grandchildren: McKenna (Nick) Grayson, Karisa Eddington; great-grandchildren: Carter and Carson Eddington; brother, Lester (Lyla) Eddington and sister, June Heneman. He was preceded in death by his parents, and mother and father-in-law, Wesley and Billie Moritz.

 Calvin H. Benneweis, 81, of Cavalier, ND, passed away Monday, August 28, 2023, at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital in Cavalier. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 2, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held for one hour before the time of the service at the church.
Calvin was born September 18, 1941, near Hensel, ND, to Henry and Grace (Rickbeil) Benneweis. He grew up near Hensel and graduated from Cavalier High School in 1960. On February 14, 1965, Cal married Diane Gebur at Rock Lake, ND. He farmed in the Hensel area, and also managed the Robertson Lumber Yard and worked at North Valley Equipment in Grafton until his retirement. He is survived by his children: Scot Benneweis, Big Lake, MN; Dynessa (Steve) Nordrum, Corpus Christi, TX; and Jonathan Benneweis, Cavalier, ND; sister-in-law, Alta Faye Benneweis; nephew, Darren Benneweis and niece, Teri Sharp. Thompson, 88, of Grafton, ND passed away Sunday August 27, 2023, in Unity Hospital, Grafton, ND.
Ann Marie Larson was born July 31,1935 in St. Thomas, ND, the daughter of Roy and Antoinette (Campeau) Larson. She graduated from St. Thomas High School in St. Thomas, ND in 1954. Ann was Salutatorian of her class, in spite of having to work the harvest in the fall and starting school late each year. Ann married Harlan Thompson on February 4,1961 in Grafton, ND. They made their home near Grafton and raised their 2 children, Carol and Michael. Early in their marriage Ann was employed as a telephone operator in Grafton. She was especially proud of a time in her career as an operator when she was given a special commendation for saving the life of a poisoned child when the mother called for help. Ann got the emergency personnel directed to the home (way before 911 was invented). Ann retired from the phone company when it moved operations and she became the quintessential farm wife. She always managed to keep an impeccably clean house while tending a large lawn and garden. All this while being on call to make the occasional run for parts or to chauffeur people from field to field. Ann was a great cook and baker and a superb hostess. Every fall she would be busy canning, freezing and baking for Christmas. In 1989, Harlan and Ann moved into town (Grafton, ND). Ann and Harlan spent over thirty years as “winter Texans” in the Alamo/Harlingen Texas area, gaining many friends from all over the United States and Canada. Ann also liked their occasional trips to the casino. She was a member of the Grafton Lutheran Church and involved in the Faith & Care ministry there. Ann was a wonderful grandma to her grandsons - Steven, Matthew, Jaime and Bryan; she enjoyed the time she spent with her two great-grandsons – Wyatt and Marshall Ebertowski. Ann was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Ann is survived by her husband Harlan, her daughter Carol (Duane) Ebertowski and her son Michael (Cindy) Thompson, all of Grafton; grandchildren Steven (Nicole) Ebertowski, Aurora, CO; Matthew Ebertowski, Grafton, ND; Jaime (Jasmine) Arroyo, Tacoma, WA; and Bryan (Megan Bramble) Arroyo, Boise, ID. Great-grandsons, Wyatt and Marshall Ebertowski, Aurora, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Francis, Roy, Dennis, Edward, Donald, Henry and Randy Larson; sisters, Joyce Mattson, Lois Chounard and Eileen Siewert. Also preceding her were her sister-in-law, Clarice Thompson, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Elaine Thompson, and brother-in-law Victor Johnson. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at 10:30 AM at Grafton Lutheran Church in Grafton, ND. Visitation will be Monday, September 4, 2023, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM with a 7:00 PM prayer service at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton. Friends may call at the church for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Grafton Lutheran Cemetery. Karen Rae Zak, 65 of Grand Forks, ND passed away Monday, August 7, 2023, at her home in Grand Forks. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 8, 2023 at Walhalla Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held an hour before the service at the church.
Karen was born October 9, 1957, in Grafton ND, the daughter of Hilton and Marjorie (Verville) Johnson, the oldest of four children. She grew up in Walhalla, her childhood was filled with playing with her siblings and cousins, and later graduated from Walhalla High School. On December 4, 1982, she married Gerald Zak and they made their home in Grand Forks, ND, where they raised two children. Karen worked at Hugo’s Grocery Store for several years, where she enjoyed her coworkers and many customers. She enjoyed her flower garden, her pets, spending time with her grandchildren and attending their activities. She is survived by her husband Gerald; children Kyle (Meghann) Zak and Amber (Jay) Hogfoss, all of Grand Forks, ND; Grandchildren: Nora, Owen and Ruby Zak; mother, Marjorie Johnson, Walhalla, ND; siblings: Kim Johnson, Walhalla, ND; Kenny Johnson, Walhalla, ND; and Konnie Murray, Chicago, IL. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Hilton. Jeanne Marie Silewski, 75, of Grafton, ND passed away on Tuesday, August
15, 2023 at the Lutheran Sunset Home in Grafton, ND. She died from health complications of her liver and kidneys with her brother by her side. Jeanne Marie Silewski was born July 29, 1948 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Drayton, ND. She grew up on the family farm next to the Red River where she enjoyed playing on the hills, helping her Mother bake and gardening. She graduated from Drayton High School in 1969. After graduation she moved to Grand Forks, ND and was a nanny for a family and lived with her Aunt and Uncle, Doris and Wallace Harris. After a few years she moved to Grafton to her own apartment and worked at the Lutheran Sunset Home for several years. She started her own Daycare in Grafton and was able to watch several children grow through the years. Upon retirement she remained in her apartment and enjoyed life and visits home with her Mom and Dad most every weekend. Jeanne enjoyed visiting on the phone with her many friends and family, collecting any kind of angels and cats, phone shopping, looking forward to the next Avon order and reading books about her Catholic religion and the saints. She entered the Lutheran Sunset Home in the fall of 2018. She loved and enjoyed living there with the wonderful staff and residents. She especially enjoyed playing bingo and collecting the tokens to shop in the Bingo Store. Jeanne especially enjoyed the wonderful staff at the Lutheran Sunset Home and the love and care she received. The staff shared with her brother many Jeanne stories and jokes she came up with which was appreciated. Jeanne is survived by her brother, Thomas Paul Silewski of Stephen, Minnesota, her brother-in-law, Christopher Loveless of Grand Forks, ND, nephews Brett (Alexandra) Loveless, South Orange, New Jersey; Travis (Desiree McGoven), Vancouver, Washington; and Cory (Katie) Loveless, West Fargo, ND; Great-nephews Noah Harvey Loveless and Wesley Christopher Loveless. She is preceded in death by her parents Thomas Joseph Silewski and Irene Bolduc Silewski, her infant sister Nancy and sister Linda Silewski Loveless. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. in St. John’s Catholic Church, Grafton. Interment will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Stephen, Minnesota. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to services on Saturday.  Stanley Votava, age 91 of Grafton, ND, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 14, 2023 at First Care Hospital in Park River, ND. He had been a resident at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Park River since February.
Stanley R. Votava was born May 26, 1932 in Grafton, ND. He is the son of the late Frank K. and Anna (Matejcek) Votava. He grew up on the family farm near Veseleyville, ND and attended school in Grafton Township. He was inducted into the United States Army on February 4, 1953 serving until he was honorably discharged on December 16, 1954. Stanley was united in marriage to Mary Jo Bina on June 17, 1958 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, Veseleyville, ND. They lived on the family farm near Veseleyville and had three sons. After his wife died, Stanley moved with his sons to Grafton, ND in the fall of 1970. Stanley worked at Gambles Hardware, Grafton Appliance and farmed for thirty-eight years before retiring in 1997. Stanley was a member of the St. John’s Catholic Church of Grafton, the Grafton American Legion Post #41 and the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #9367. He enjoyed dancing on the weekends, being around his family and rooting for his favorite baseball team, the Twins. Stanley is survived by his three sons: Wayne Votava, Grafton, ND; Dean Votava, Costa Mesa, CA; Kevin (Sara) Votava, Portland, OR; and grandchildren: Laura (Noah) Votava and Mary Votava. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary Jo on September 15, 1970, brothers Frank and Marcellin Votava and sister Dorothy Shereck. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, September 1, 2023 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Veseleyville, ND. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the St. Luke’s Catholic Cemetery, Veseleyville, ND. Military Rites will be provided by the Grafton American Legion Post #41 and North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard. Korynta, 68, of Grand Forks, North Dakota, formerly of Cavalier, North Dakota, passed away Monday, August 14, 2023 at his home in Grand Forks. Visitation will be held Friday, August 25, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND.
Glenn was born July 26, 1955, in Hazen, ND, to Frank and Helen (Chapiewski) Korynta. He moved to Cavalier when his father was transferred there with Nodak Electric. He attended Cavalier High School and after graduating he worked for Jeff Stevenson at the service station. Glenn married Sherry Becker and they had one son, Matthew. After moving to Grand Forks, Glenn went to work for Nodak Rural Electric, where he worked until his retirement. In his retirement years he enjoyed going to car shows and spending time with the “5 o’clock social group.” He will be missed by many friends. He is survived by his son, Matthew; ex-wife, Sherry; sisters: Gladys (Wayne) Trottier and Gwen Hartje; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Grace Stromli; and brother-in-law, Mark Hartje.  Floyd Lafferty, 70, of Walhalla, ND passed away Friday, August 11, 2023, at his home, peacefully among his family and friends. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Walhalla, ND. Visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of services.
Floyd Lafferty was born July 10, 1953, at home in Walhalla, ND to Laverne and Eva (Ducioame) Lafferty. He grew up and attended school in Walhalla. On February 14, 1981, he married Katherine Horgan in Cavalier, ND. Floyd worked for area farmers, including Johnson and Bjornstad Farms, Simplot, and Walhalla Farmers Grain. Floyd was well known for planting the straightest rows each year before GPS. Floyd spent his free time hunting, playing pool, bowling, playing card games, gardening, riding through the hills, and working in his garage. He enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings on TV and was a fan of many other sports including boxing, the NBA, and various hunting and fishing programs. Floyd and Kathy enjoyed each other and their family until her passing on February 13, 2012. Floyd later married Dana Braget on August 19, 2017 in Walhalla, ND. She survives him as does his children: Jason Lafferty and Dixie (Steven Ouellette) Lafferty, Michelle (Jeff) Manley, and Tera Thorsteinson, grandchildren: Ashley (Tom) Kellogg, Allison (Jordan) Mertens, Alea Manley, Addelyn Manley, Jeslyn Lafferty (Tristan Shepherd), Bradyn Lafferty, Brad Keckler, Brycen, Steven Jr., and Sadee Ouellette. His great-grandchildren: Grady, Hollynn, and Avvi, siblings: Lloyd (Debbie) Lafferty, Wanda (Scott) Sonderby, Travis (Roxanne) Lafferty, Denise Cook (Jacob Penner), Zachery (Theresa) Lafferty, Barbara (Steve) Mathias, stepchildren: Leah (Jason) McCloud, Anthony, Jessica (Kris), and Jimmy (Jennifer) Goulet. Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, Kathy Lafferty, brothers: Karl, Terry, and Jerry Lafferty, and granddaughter, Abby Jo Manley.  Dale A. Brown, 69, passed away Thursday, August 3, 2023. He grew up and lived in the Hoople area his entire life. Dale was born in Grafton on March 30,1954, to C. Henry and Deloris Brown.
Dale loved to hunt anything, attend gun shows and auctions with good friends and family. Mostly he loved to be around his grandchildren. He was always busy doing something around his farm after a hard day of work. Dale would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He was one of the good guys! He was employed by Paul Fedje, David Hensrud, and at the time of his passing, TG Farms of Hoople. Dale is survived by son, Jason (Stacy) Brown, Park River; daughter, Nicole (Clayne) Pipkin, Cavalier; grandchildren, Aiden, Brayson, Cooper, Brynleigh, David, Alyssa, and Lori; fiance, Linda Storey; mother, Deloris; brothers, Mike, Gene (Judy), Matthew; and sister DeAnn (Doug) Haugland. Dale was preceded in death by his father, brother Ron, and granddaughter, Susan. Dale was a jeans and t-shirt type of guy, the family invites everyone to wear their comfortable clothes to celebrate his life. Memorial service will be held Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, Hoople, ND. Visitation will be held for one hour before the time of the service at the church. |
