 Wallace Alan Rutter Jr. age 39 of Grafton ND, passed away peacefully after a brave 6 month
battle with stage IV esophageal cancer on Wednesday, September 30th, 2020 at the Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo, ND. Wallace was born on February 12th, 1981 in Grafton, ND. He grew up, attended school, and graduated from Grafton High School in 2000. Wallace remained in Grafton his entire life. He was well known in the community as an outgoing, peaceable and caring man who always had a smile and kind word for everyone he saw. He had an insatiable appetite for knowledge. His knowledge of the world, history, and human nature was beyond his years and beyond his personal experience. As a lifelong member of the Grafton Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Wallace had a profound love for God’s Word. His knowledge of the Bible was remarkable and he devoted much of his time to personal study. The Carnegie Regional Library in Grafton was one of his favorite places to spend time. He had a lifelong love of books and found joy and adventure within their pages. His love for music always had him singing a happy tune and helped him remain upbeat throughout his courageous battle. He is survived by his parents, Wally and Thommie Rutter of Grafton, ND; his sister Mary Curtis (Rutter), brother-in-law Jeff Curtis and niece Vanessa Curtis, all of Seattle, WA; his aunt Mary Nordman of Santa Ana, CA; his aunt Shirley Rutter of Bismarck, ND; his uncle Juan Trevino, aunt Susie Trevino and family of Edinburg Texas. He is also survived by numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his Grandparents Franklin and Olive Rutter of Turtle Lake, ND; Grandparents Matilde and Juanita Trevino of Corpus Christi, TX; his uncle Kenneth Rutter of Turtle Lake, ND, and uncle Lowell Rutter of Turtle Lake, ND. A virtual memorial service is being arranged, details and date pending final arrangements by the family.

 David G. Dahlen, 72, peacefully passed away on September 27, 2020 at First Care hospital in Park River, ND surrounded by his family.
David was born on April 16 1948 to Leonard and Drusilla (McCarthy) Dahlen. He grew up in rural Webster, ND where he attended rural school until his family moved to Devils Lake. He, then, attended and graduated from Central High Devils Lake in 1967. After his graduation, he joined the Navy in 1968. He was discharged in 1972. Upon his return he worked at various jobs in the Devils Lake area. In 1974, he met the love of his life Barbara Kay while she attended nursing school in Devils Lake. They were united in marriage on November 28, 1975. This was the day after Thanksgiving and was forever known as their anniversary date. From this union, they had three children Jencie Kay, Sarah Jo, and John (Casey). Earlier in their marriage they lived various places throughout the Midwest.In the late 70’s, David decided to move his family to Wahpeton, ND so he could attend plumbing school at North Dakota State School of Science. He worked in different towns after graduation and finally settled in Park River, ND. He worked for Hunter plumbing and was trained in heating and air conditioning. He earned his master’s plumbing license and opened Dahlen Plumbing and Heating where he served the community and surrounding area for many years. He retired at age 62 and worked part-time for his son. In later years, he became a snowbird and wintered in Arizona. He loved golfing and every Wednesday afternoon he could be found at the Hillcrest Golf Course. He is survived by his wife of 45 years Barbara; children: Jencie Dahlen of Sisseton SD, Sarah (Stephen Sharpe) Dahlen of Grand Forks and Casey (Grace Peterson) Dahlen of Park River; grandchildren Max Dahlen (Jencie), Remington, Weston, Finn, and MaKya (Casey & Grace) along with Drusilla and Jo Etta (Sarah & Stephen); brothers Bill (Mary) Dahlen of West Fargo and Dan (Nola) Dahlen of Devils Lake, as well as special sister-in-law and brother-in-law David and Roberta Bearinger. He has many sisters/brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews in his extended family. He is preceded in death by his father, Leonard, and mother, Drusilla as well as two infant sisters. Father/Mother in law Ovila and Marion Charbonneau. David believed in supporting the community so in lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Hillcrest Golf Club and/or Park River Ambulance both in Park River, ND. Due to COVID no food will be served. Please wear masks and follow social distancing. There will be an open house at the Tollefson Funeral Home on Monday, October 5th from 12pm to 2pm. Following the open house there will be a graveside memorial at Memorial Park Cemetery in Park River. If you would like to bring a lawn chair to the outdoor memorial service, it would be acceptable. Military Rites will be provided by the Park River American Legion Post #147 and the US Naval Honor Guard.  Joyce O. Sagert, 88, of Mountain, ND, formerly of Neche, ND, passed away September 19, 2020, at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier, ND. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 23, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. at the United Lutheran Church, Cavalier. Visitation will be held for one hour before the time of the service. Use of masks and social distancing is recommended.
Joyce was born August 8, 1932, in Vang, ND, to Joseph and Olga (Christianson) Thompson. She attended school at Vang and high school in Walhalla. On July 8, 1952, she married Rienhold Sagert. They farmed in the Neche area. Joyce enjoyed playing cards, gardening, crocheting, and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her children: Keith (Marilyn) Sagert, Neche, ND and Mark Sagert, Cavalier, ND; grandchildren: Jeremy (Kayla) Sagert; Carmin (Dan) Lampi; Kevin (Irina) Sagert; Drew (Jadeyn) Sagert; and Austin Sagert; six great-grandchildren and sister, Marion (Richard) Raymer. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers: Earl, Arthur, and Marvin Thompson, and sister, Adeline Williams.  Thelma F. Nelson, age 80 of Grafton, North Dakota, passed away Wednesday, September 16, 2020 at the Unity Medical Center of Grafton.
Thelma Faye Watkins was born June 17, 1940 in Drayton, North Dakota, the daughter of the late Willis and Marion (Uggerud) Watkins. She grew up in rural Drayton attending Herrick School in rural Walsh County and Grafton High School, graduating in 1958. She started working at Earl’s Shoe Store while in high school and continued working for Herbel’s Shoe Store and the Shoe Box until it closed. Thelma was united in marriage to LeRoy Nelson on February 18, 1961 at the Grafton Lutheran Church of Grafton. Thelma worked as the librarian for the Grafton Public Schools until her retirement in 2005. She was a member of the Grafton Lutheran Church, church circle, a Luther League advisor and a Sunday school treasurer. She was also involved with the Girl Scouts. Thelma loved being with her family and friends. She enjoyed baking, cooking, gardening, canning, sewing and crafting. When she worked at the school she would often bring in bundt cakes on Thursday’s, which the teachers dubbed “Thelma Thursday”. She also made caramel rolls for the city shop crew. Thelma is survived by her husband of 59 years, LeRoy Nelson, Grafton, ND; daughters: Monica (Chris) Olson, Braham, MN; Marcia (Chris) Olson, Grafton, ND; Melinda (Burrell) Nadeau, Andover, MN; grandchildren: Melissa (Kevin) Hopke, Cory (Melissa) Blanchard, Sydney (Jesús Flores) Will, Lily Nadeau and Claire Olson; brothers: Robert (Marilyn) Watkins, Raymond (Kathy) Watkins and George (Darlene) Watkins; sisters: Mary (Everett) Wheeler and Renae (Lynn) Fredrickson; sister-in-law, Ann Marie Estad and brother-in-law, Bennie Nelson. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters: Helen Louise Watkins and Doris Thomasson and mother and father-in-law, Everett and Stella Nelson. Funeral services will be Monday, September 21, 2020 at 10:30 A.M. at the Grafton Lutheran Church of Grafton. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the Grafton Lutheran Cemetery. Masks will be required and social distancing guidelines will be followed.  Melvin G. Lembke, 89, of Neche, ND, passed away Monday, September 14, 2020, at his home near Neche, ND. Visitation will be held Thursday, September 17, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Askew Funeral Home in Cavalier, ND. A private family memorial service will be held on Friday. Use of masks and social distancing is recommended.
Melvin was born July 26, 1931, at Neche, ND, to George and Martha (Saiger) Lembke. He grew up and attended country school near Neche and graduated from Neche High School. On December 18, 1953, Melvin married Elaine Quam in Cavalier, ND. Melvin farmed in the Neche area his entire life. Elaine and Melvin wintered in Donna, TX, for many years. Some of the things he enjoyed were playing cards, traveling, and spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Elaine; children: Rhonda (Lanny) Schweitzer, Cavalier, ND; Randy (Peggy) Lembke, Foristell, MO; and Curtis (Mary) Lembke, Manassas, VA; grandchildren: Samantha and Sallie; Chad (Julie) and Brittany; Brett and Brynn; great-grandson, Maxwell; step-grandchildren: Patrick and Shane; siblings: Mona Taylor-Vosper, Donna (Ken) Kallestad, Darlene Bartholomay, and Wayne (Vicki) Lembke. He was preceded in death by his parents.  Timothy John Jelinek, age 56 of Park River, ND, passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2020 at 2:00 PM in the Little Park across from the Federated Church in Park River. Guests are asked to bring their own chairs. Lunch will be served. In case of inclement weather, the services will be held at Victory Free Lutheran Church. Inurnment will be at the St. Mark’s Catholic Cemetery of Conway.  Beverly A. Pegg, 82, of Cavalier, ND, passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2020, at the Good Samaritan Society, Park River, ND. Graveside service will be held Monday, September 7, 2020, at 10:30 a.m. at the Cavalier Cemetery, please bring your lawn chairs. Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held Sunday, September 6th, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Askew Funeral Home in Cavalier, ND. Social distancing and face covers are recommended.
Beverly Ann Hobart Simmons Pegg was born July 14, 1938 in St. Thomas, ND the 11th child of Ernest “Jake” and Laura (Chapman) Jacobsen. When Beverly was four months old her mother passed away, her father was unable to care for the younger children and they were placed in the Children’s Home in Fargo, ND. At the age of one year, she was adopted by Donald and Betsy (Gifford) Hobart. Her adopted family moved and lived in various locations throughout her life, including Fargo, Minneapolis, Seattle, and San Diego. Beverly graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in San Diego in 1956. In 1959, she graduated from San Diego Junior College. On July 28, 1961, Beverly married Howard R. Simmons at the First Presbyterian Church in Las Vegas, NV. She was a bookkeeper at Industrial Supplies in El Cajon, CA. Howard passed away March 14, 1985. Bev then married Herbert “Herby” Pegg at the Cavalier Baptist Church. She was involved with helping Herby with his cattle and the Rendezvous and Threshers events. They were also in many parades and car shows with Herby’s “Moon” car. Herby passed away on March 19, 2014. Bev belonged to the Cavalier Baptist Church, Pioneer Heritage Association, Hamilton Homemakers, Cavalier Cemetery, and her “Card Group.” She is survived by her stepchildren: Judy Pegg, Cavalier, ND and Jeffrey (Maria) Pegg, West Fargo, ND; step grandchildren: Rebecca (Rick) Olson, Plymouth, MN and Seth Pegg, Fargo, ND, nephews: Rob, Mark, and Shawn Willhelm; and other nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were both sets of parents, husbands: Howard and Herby, brothers: James, Earl, Gordon, and Calvin, infant brothers: Melvin and Russell; sisters: Mary in infancy, Norma Graham, Edna Carpenter, Joyce Reiter, and Barbara Willhelm. |
