Joyce Tongen December 11, 1926 — November 27, 2023 Cavalier, ND Joyce Ethel Tongen, 96, of Cavalier, ND, passed away Monday, November 27, 2023, at the Borg Pioneer Memorial Home, Mountain, ND. Funeral service will be held Friday, December 1, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the Askew Funeral Home in Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held one hour before the time of service at Askew Funeral Home. Immediately after the service, burial will take place at Hillside Cemetery in Walhalla, ND. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Borg Pioneer Memorial Home, 61 Borg Drive, Mountain, ND 58265. Joyce was born on December 11, 1926, to Olafur and Ethel (Bjornson) Einarson in Mountain ND. She grew up on the farm near Milton, ND. She was an alumnus of Milton High School and went on to further her education at Mayville State College. She was a schoolteacher for Park Center Rural School near Walhalla. She met her husband, Clair E Tongen, at a country dance and married on December 31, 1946, at the Lutheran Parsonage in Mountain ND. They made their home initially on the farm near Walhalla and later moved to Cavalier where they raised their youngest child. Joyce resided in the Borg Nursing Home for quite some time where she was loved by all. Joyce was an excellent cook and baker as well as a wonderful mother and very proud Grandma. She enjoyed reading, gardening, and was an active member of the Presbyterian Church both in Park Center and Cavalier. She enjoyed walking and volunteering at the Cavalier Thrift Store in her later years. Survivors include her children: Constance Graham and children Sean (Elane) Graham and Heather Graham; Joel (Loretta) Tongen and children Erik and Adam (Ana) Tongen; Karen (Darrell) Kemnitz and children Ryan (Jenna) Kemnitz and Rachel (Marcus) Ramsay; Becky (Lynn) Ault and children Stephanie, Julie (Nik) Kemnitz, Katelyn and Richard "Ricky". Great Grandchildren: Finnegan, Mason, and Samantha Graham, Bodie Graham, Harper, and Holden Tongen, Ava, Henry, and Everett Kemnitz, Nora and Jade Ramsay, Ivy and Charlee Kemnitz. Her sister, Beverly Bleakley. Joyce is preceded in death by her husband Clair Tongen, parents Olafur and Ethel Einarson, brothers Dennis Einarson and Bill Einarson, sisters Judy Klindt, Lorraine Chaput, Fern Stabo, Olivia Veer, Mavis Einarson, Doreen Nelson, and sister Inga who died as a child. Also preceding her in death is her son-in-law, Richard (Dick) Graham.

Donald J. Denault, 92, formerly of Cavalier, ND passed away Saturday, November 25, 2023 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, December 1, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Brigid of Ireland Catholic Church in Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 30th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. vigil service at the church. Donald was born near Olga, North Dakota, to Levi and Catherine (Hurley) Denault. He attended the Tongue River School and then farmed with this dad. On September 16, 1950 he married Marilyn Sundberg of Loma, ND. They farmed east of Langdon until 1963 when they bought land in South Olga Township. They raised cattle and grew crops. As a young man, Donald taught himself to play guitar. He and Marilyn both enjoyed playing guitar and singing. They were in a band in the late 60’s. He was also a skilled marksman and enjoyed deer hunting. As a farmer, he had many skills and talents including carpentry and working with animals. In the 1970s he also worked at the PAR site, first as a carpenter and then in security. Donald is survived by his daughters: Julia (Bob) Landry of Eagan, MN, Anita (Gary) Stevens of Cavalier, ND, Susan (John) Freienmuth of St Charles, MO, Wanda (Colin) Busch of Kamas, UT and Dawn (Roger) Gendron of Divide, CO. Evelyn Feltman of Grand Forks, ND, died November 24, 2023, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, 5 days short of her 91st birthday. Evalenor was born Nov 29, 1932, in Grafton, ND to Harry and Eva (Stoltman) Schuster. She attended grade school in a one-room schoolhouse, School District #83 one mile from home. After graduating from the Northwest School of Agriculture, Crookston, MN in 1950, she went to Mayville State Teachers College for one year in 1951. On November 27, 1950, she married Raymond Feltman at St. Stanislaus Church in Warsaw, ND. Raymond died December 9, 2004. Evelyn worked as a seamstress for Goodman’s in Grand Forks, Frito Lay Potato, Grand Forks Glass and Paint, Home of Economy Furniture, and enjoyed the summers she volunteered in Medora. She finally retired at the age of 80. She remembered every customer by name over all the years that she worked in sales. She was an active member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Grand Forks. Evelyn was very sociable and loved to stay busy with church dinners, attending local music and entertainment events, and meeting friends for meals. She was especially proud of and enjoyed spending time and staying involved with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they have grown through the years. Providing a meal of sauerkraut and spareribs, or corned beef and cabbage to numerous friends and family was always one of her greatest joys. She blessed many people with her amazing homemade buns, caramel rolls, and baked goods. P.S. If you have a Tupperware container labeled Ev, please return it! White, 70, of Walhalla, ND passed away Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital, in Cavalier, ND. Delbert was born September 26, 1953 at International Falls, MN to Amie and Ruby (Coanat) White. He grew up in Walhalla and then later worked for Stremick Farms. On February 9, 2001, he married Nancy Ouellette at Cavalier, ND. He enjoyed riding in the hills, playing cards, bingo, and Yahtzee. Delbert especially like the Minnesota Vikings and spending time with his family was very important to him. He is survived by his wife, Nancy, children: Jasmine White, Crookston, MN, Tiffany White (Shelley Roundtree), Jackson, MS, Derek White, East Grand Forks, MN, grandchildren: Mackenzie, Megan, and Brett Yellow, Arianna and Shawn Roundtree, Kinsle and Karson White. Joseph “Joe” Flahavan Landrigan, age 71 of St. Thomas, ND passed away on Sunday, November 12, 2023 at his home. Joe was born December 13, 1951 to the late John and Mollie (Flahavan) Landrigan in Grand Forks, ND. He was raised in St. Thomas, ND where he attended St. Thomas Public School and played football. In 1969, Joe enlisted in the US Navy at age 18. He completed basic training in San Diego, CA. In 1970, he joined the Vietnam War onboard the U.S.S. Richard B. Anderson where he was stationed in Japan until he was honorably discharge in 1974. Joe returned to St. Thomas, ND where he resided for the remainer of his life. He married in 1976 and was the proud father of 2 daughters. Joe attended Wahpeton State School of Science and graduated with degrees in Heating and Cooling and Plumbing. Joe worked as a plumber and ran his own plumbing business for several years. He worked in Grafton at Kutz & O’Brien and at the boiler plant at the Developmental Center before retiring. Joe loved his daughters, grandchildren, longtime companion and friend Kim Littlejohn, dogs, friends, and his community. Joe enjoyed working on cars and raced stock cars at the Grand Forks Speedway, Hallock and Hamilton. He was an avid NASCAR and Steelers fan. Joe will be greatly missed by his children: Jayce (Richie) Schumacher, Grafton, ND, Keeley (Paul) Ray, Maple Grove, MN; 7 grandchildren Greer, John, Elle, and Jack Schumacher and Fallon, Arden, and Farrah Ray; sisters Kass (Jim) Mihelich, Tower, MN, Mollie (Gordon) Weis, Seabrook Island, SC; nieces and nephew. Myrna Stremick, 86, of Walhalla, ND passed away Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital in Cavalier, ND. Myrna Tetrault was born April 16, 1937, in Grand Forks, ND to Leonard and Hilda (Urlaub) Tetrault. On September 22, 1956, she married Philip Stremick at St. Boniface Catholic Church. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church where she was active in many different church activities, and she was also involved in several Walhalla civic organizations. Myrna was a devoted employee of the Askew Funeral Home for over 31 years. She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother and she was blessed with many lifelong friends. She touched so many lives throughout her lifetime. Donna Clarice Moen was born September 15, 1932, to Carl J. and Dagney (Olson) Moen. Donna grew up on a farm near Whitman, ND with her siblings: Sherman, Almira, and Maurice. After graduating from Concordia College in 1954, she taught Business Training at the University of Minnesota at Morris, MN, then on to Fargo Central High School. Back in Fargo she met the love of her life- a ND Ag College/ Happy Hooligan pilot, William John Newell. Donna and Bill married June 28, 1959, at Whitman, ND. They moved to a farm near Neche where they raised their family and built a life together. Donna was devoted to her family, friends, and faith. She loved music and laughter. She was always involved in her community where she was a member of the Neche UMC (their pianist, choir member, quilter, and Sunday School teacher), Cub Scout & Girl Scouts, PTA, American Legion Auxiliary, Red Hatters, Square Dancing, and Eastern Star- she enjoyed them all. She had the privilege of being North Dakota’s Order of the Eastern Grand Organist in 1992-93. Survivors include her children: Kay (Sheldon) Braget of Cavalier; Mark (Deanna) Newell and Wayne (Paula) Newell, all of Neche; grandsons: Cody (Charlotte), Blayne, Luke, Adam, and Sam; brother, Sherman Moen; great-grandchildren: Kassidee and Bentlee; brother-in-law, Manford (Eldean) Newell and sister-in-law, Marj Moen. Hoff, 105, of Walhalla, ND passed away Friday, November 3, 2023 at Langdon Prairie Health in Langdon, ND. Funeral service will be held Thursday, November 16, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Walhalla Assembly of God Church in Walhalla, ND. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour before the time of services. Howard W. Hoff was born October 10, 1918, to Joseph and Minnie (Ireland) Hoff. He lived in the Walhalla area his entire life. On August 10, 1941, he married Ann R. Syrup at Fargo, ND. After their marriage they lived and farmed south of Walhalla. Howard’s favorite job was blading the roads, and welding for over 30 years, and was able to make anything. He is survived by his children: G. Roger Behm, 66, of Mentor, MN and formerly of Cavalier, ND, passed away Friday, November 3, 2023, at the VA Hospital in Fargo, ND after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 9, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at United Lutheran Church in Cavalier. A visitation will be held Wednesday, November 8, 2023, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the church. Roger Earl Behm was born in Grand Forks, ND on November 23, 1956, to Earl (Squirt) and Margaret Ann (Yoney) Behm of Niagara, ND. He attended school in Niagara and Petersburg, graduating in 1975. After completing school, he enlisted in the Air Force from 1975 and retired in 1979. He received the Air Force Commendation Medal for his valiant service. He was united in marriage to Marilyn Schmidt on June 20, 1975. They moved to Cavalier in 1980 where they made their home raising their three children and establishing Behm’s Plumbing Inc. He built a successful plumbing business, serving the area for 48 years, and establishing additional branches in Mentor, Alexandria, MN and Mesa, AZ. Roger served as a volunteer fireman for the Cavalier Fire Department. He also served as a board member for the Cavalier Country Club and the Maple Lake Association Board. He was a proud member of the American Legion and the Elks Lodge. Roger enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and being at the lake with his family and friends. He enjoyed watching his grandkids participate in their sporting events and activities. For the past few years, Roger and Marilyn enjoyed spending their winters at their home in Mesa, AZ. Family members include his wife, Marilyn; children: Chris (Kellie Thomas) Behm, Alexandria, MN; Holly (Casey) Bergh, East Grand Forks, MN; and Lindsay (Josh) Austfjord, Casselton, ND; Grandchildren: Shelby (Tom) Zach, Nicholas Behm, Sophie Thomas; Kaden Robinson, Taylor and Megan Bergh; Emma, Lucille, Lillian and Beau Austfjord; Great-grandchildren: Allie and Isaac Zach; Siblings: Jolene (Kevin) Nason Lakeland, FL; Jill (Mike Bina) Kroke Michigan, ND; and Robert (Kelly) Behm Bismarck, ND; Brother-in-Law: Michael Wardzinski of Bismarck, ND; Donald (Michelle) Schmidt Washburn, ND; Russ Schmidt West Fargo, ND; Brian (Mary) Schmidt Lakota, ND; Sister-in-laws Joyce (Mark) Magnus Northwood, ND; Evy (Eric) Olson Bozeman, MT;and several nieces and nephews.
