![]() Virginia J. Wimpfheimer, 97, of Cavalier, ND passed away Saturday, November 30, 2019 at Wedgewood Manor, Cavalier, ND. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 6, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. the United Lutheran Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour before the time of services. Burial will be held in the Cavalier Cemetery. Virginia June Wimpfheimer was born June 30, 1922 in St Thomas, ND. She moved to the family farm near Cavalier before her first birthday and remained a resident of Cavalier the rest of her life. She completed high school with the class of 1942 and then worked at the Red Owl grocery. She was later employed by Dr. Waldren, before becoming a receptionist at the new Cavalier Clinic in the 1950s. There she scheduled and greeted patients for over three decades and eventually knew most Pembina County residents. She’s remembered for sharing cheer and concern with all who came to the clinic. Virginia was devoted to her family and cared for her elderly parents and later several siblings. She loved animals and enjoyed socializing with her many farm cats. In earlier years she was an avid league bowler, and she maintained long friendships with neighbors and fellow members of her church. Virginia was the youngest child of Carl and Katherine Wimpfheimer, who farmed in Pembina county beginning in the 1880s. She was predeceased by her siblings Sadie, Gladys, Edna, Irene, Frances, Ben, Harold, Charlie, Clarence, and Stanley. Virginia is survived by nieces: Janice, Sharon, Robin, and Colleen, and nephews: Duane, Bob, and Todd, as well as many great-nieces and nephews.

![]() Maria E. Cano, 65, of Cavalier, ND passed away Friday, November 29, 2019 at the St. Joseph’s Hospital, Park Rapids, MN. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the Cavalier Evangelical Free Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 3rd from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church. Burial will be held in the Cavalier Cemetery. Maria Esther DeLeon was born March 7, 1954 at Raymondville, Texas, to Jose Ines and Julia (Ozuna) DeLeon. She attended school at Othello, WA. Following her schooling she worked as a farm laborer and at a convalescent home in Othello. On April 2, 1976, she married Jesus Cano at East Chicago, Indiana. After their marriage they lived in East Chicago, IN. In 1981, the family moved to Cavalier, ND. While in Cavalier she worked various jobs and received her associates degree in accounting. She was most recently the secretary at the Cavalier Evangelical Free Church. Maria especially loved helping the elderly and also enjoyed quilting. She Is survived by her husband, Jesus Cano; children: Ann (Hector) Jurado from General Bravo, Mexico and Nat (Gracy) Cano from Cavalier, ND; grandchildren: Nicole (Brandon) Terry, Damian Avila, Demetrius Avila, Diamente Cano; Hector Jurado, Jr. and Anhuar Jurado; and Greg Cano. Also survived are her siblings: Blanca Martinez, Dr. Conrado DeLeon, Felicitas Rodriguez, Sosten DeLeon, Oscar DeLeon, MariaElena Hernandez, Hermelinda Garza, Bisente DeLeon, Julie Arriaga, and Benny DeLeon. Preceding her in death were her parents; Jose Ines and Julia DeLeon; daughter, Elsa Cano; and brother, Jose Ines DeLeon, Jr. ![]() John M. Evenson, age 88 of Edinburg, ND passed away on Wednesday, November 27, 2019 at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND. John Markus Evenson was born July 19, 1931 near Edinburg, ND the son of the late John and Minnie (Hammerstad) Evenson. He graduated from Edinburg High School in 1949 and from Concordia College in 1953. John was drafted into the United States Army in 1953 and served in Arkansas and Oklahoma. John was united in marriage to Eunice Haug on June 20, 1954 in Edinburg, ND. The couple lived at Fort Sill for one year. Following his discharge from the Army John taught school in Bemidji, MN and Gardar, ND. In 1959 the couple moved to Edinburg, ND. John taught science and served as principal. In the summer months he farmed and raised cattle until retiring from farming in 1987. He retired from education in 1994. John and Eunice moved to Maple Manor in Langdon in 2018 and the Good Samaritan Center in Park River in 2019. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church where he served on the church council. He served as Past Commander of the Edinburg American Legion Post. John enjoyed gardening, planting flowers and just being out in his yard. He was a big Bison Football fan and recorded all the games and watched them many times. He loved to follow his older grandsons in all their sporting events when they were in school and he didn’t miss many games. He looked forward to the Sunday visits from his younger grandsons in the last few years. John and Eunice spent part of 5 winters in Arizona but decided they were missing too much at home and quit. John was very involved with Edinburg community events. There weren’t too many events that he did not attend. He was on committees for Edinburg town, school and church reunions. He and Eunice were the grand marshals in the parade for the Edinburg reunion in 2007. He followed all the Edinburg sporting events and was a big Spartan fan. One of his highlights was when Edinburg won the State Class B Boys Basketball tournament in 1988. He watched those games for many years. He enjoyed running into former students and visiting. When he was younger he enjoyed deer hunting and fishing. He and Eunice enjoyed going for evening drives, checking the crops and going to Dairy Queen. He loved visiting at the Table of Knowledge and he truly loved the town of Edinburg. ![]() Walter Paton Millar, 99, passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2019, at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital, in Cavalier, ND. He was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada to James Harvey Millar and Mabel (Paton) Millar on April 21, 1920. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 3, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. at the Park Center-Walhalla Presbyterian Church, Walhalla, ND. Visitation will be held Monday, December 2, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will be held in the Hillside Cemetery in Walhalla, ND. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Walhalla Ambulance Service or the Pembilier Nursing Center. Walter grew up in the Hyde Park area of Neche, ND. He attended Hyde Park Rural School #36 and graduated from Neche High School in 1938. He then worked for various farmers in the area until joining the US Marine Corps in August 1942. As a citizen of Canada, Walter had the distinction of being the first Marine that was not a naturalized citizen of the United States at the time of his enlistment. During World War II, he served in the South Pacific. He was formally discharged in October 1945. Walter became a US citizen in May 1946. After his discharge, Walter returned to North Dakota and resumed farming his grandfather’s homestead. He married Eileen Rosen on November 7, 1956. They raised three sons and one daughter. Walter retired from farming in 1982 but continued to help with harvest every year through his 93rd year. After his retirement from farming, he organized a Marine reunion for the men with whom he served. The reunions became an annual event and provided Walter and Eileen an opportunity to travel for the next 25 years. Walter was a lifelong member of the Park Center-Walhalla Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and The American Legion; he served on the St. Joseph Township Board for many years. Walter enjoyed woodworking and did many handy-man jobs for friends and neighbors. Walter is survived by his children: Glen, Walhalla, ND; Allen, Rogers, AR; Wayne (Dianne), Wahpeton, ND; and Carol, St. Paul, MN. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen, his brother, Burton Millar, and sister-in-law, Shirley Millar. ![]() Dorothy Ann Lunski, 83, of Grand Forks, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at Valley Senior Living on Columbia Rd. in Grand Forks with complications from a massive stroke. Dorothy was born April 22, 1936 in Grafton to Valentine and Amelia (Wesolowski) Rolczynski of Warsaw, ND. Her parents moved to Alvarado, MN where she was raised on the family farm. She attended school and helped her dad in the fields. Dorothy was united in marriage to Clarion Lunski on November 15, 1955. They resided in Grand Forks. Clarion preceded her in death on January 29, 2016. Dorothy worked at UND Dining Services for 36 years. She was an honorary member of NRHH and a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Dorothy loved to cook and bake which she enjoyed sharing with others. She also enjoyed crocheting. Dorothy is survived by brother, Dominic Rolczynski; sister, Rose Marie Altendorf; sister-in-law, Kitty Rolezynski as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarion; her parents; brother, Henry; brother-in-law, Ray Altendorf and sister-in-law, Jean Rolczynski. Leslie Scott Siegler was born September 8, 1956 in Superior, WI the son of Allen Leroy Siegler. Sr. and Delores Elaine Rollness. Les primarily grew up in the Grafton area. After finishing school, he worked for Berger House Moving Company for many years and did farm work and mechanics. He met Shirley Anderson and together they had a daughter, Heather. Les later spent the rest of his life with the love of his life, Roberta Campbell until her death in 2015. Les was the type of person who would give the shirt off his back. He often would help anyone in need. He had many special friends who he spent a lot time with and grew up with in the Grafton area. He is survived by his daughter, Heather (Bill) Loftsgard and their children and Les' grandchildren, Chelsey and their son, Liam. Al, the son of Damion and Mary Jochim, was born in Strasburg, ND on March 16, 1941. The family lived on a farm outside of Strasburg until he was 12. They then moved to Rapid City, SD where he graduated from Cathedral High School in 1959 and went on to attend the School of Mines & Technology. In 1965, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Mary Alice Pengilly. Together they raised three children: Vonda, Troy, and Nikki. Al was employed as an iron worker in the early years of their marriage before settling down with his family in Tolna, ND when an opportunity arose for him to begin raising turkeys. When Al retired from farming in 2000, he and Alice began spending their winters in Arizona. He was always known to be able to fix anything and enjoyed doing handyman jobs for other people at the retirement park. The past three years their summer home was in Grafton, ND. Al’s faith and love for his family was evident by all who knew him well. He was also hard working and had a competitive spirit. During high school and college he excelled on the football field, and he carried that competitive spirit with him throughout his lifetime as a coach and mentor. During his years coaching girls softball he led four different teams to state championships and took one of those teams to a national tournament in Pine Bluff, AK. He was a firm believer in coaching the fundamentals and would tell his teams “You keep running those bases until they throw you out and then you better be sliding” and “I don’t care what you have to do you just keep that ball in front of you as it will only hurt for awhile if it hits you!” With a never give up attitude he was a leader and an encourager to his family, his friends and the teams he coached. Sitting at center court, “Let’s Go Blue” are the simple words we will remember him cheering loudly to encourage the players and fans during every girls and boys basketball games he attended. He was the biggest fan to his children, grandchildren, and numerous others. Al was also an avid golfer and was ready to play a round of golf anytime. Al is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary “Alice” and his children Vonda (Darryl) Collette, Grafton, ND, Troy Jochim (Clare), Bismarck, ND, and Nikki (Rob) Gellner, Grafton, ND. Al also has seven grandchildren, Kameron (Anne) Collette, Evan (Stephanie) Collette, Molly (Justin) Zahradka, Brady Jochim, Maddie Jochim, Gage Gellner and Gracie Gellner, three great grandsons, and brother in law, Dale Schumacher. He was preceded in death by his parents Damion and Mary Jochim and his two sisters Lillian Jochim and Alice Schumacher. Hiltner, 61, of Drayton, ND, passed away Thursday, November 21, 2019, at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier, ND. Memorial service will be held Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the Brooks Funeral Home, Langdon, ND. Visitation will be held for one hour before the time of the service. Burial will be held in the Union Cemetery, Osnabrock, ND. Ava was born November 11, 1958, in Cavalier, ND, to Clarence and Florence (Lajimoidinere) Denault. She grew up in various places and spent her summers in Langdon, ND. Ava graduated from high school in New York. On July 2, 1977, Ava married Gene Hiltner in Langdon, ND. She worked for various business’ in the area, and most recently worked for Friendship in Grafton as a caregiver. Some of the things she enjoyed were ceramics, sewing, and spending time with family. Ava is survived by her husband, Gene; daughter, Cynthia Hiltner, Grafton, ND; son, Aaron Hiltner, Forest River, ND; grandchildren: Acaydia, Kadyn, Emily, Leo, and Felix; sibings: Ellen Burks, Rose Denault, Wesley (Linda) Denault, and Nora (Brad) Schoenberg; sisters-in-law: Ardy Denault and Dorothy Denault; brother-in-law, Dennis Mikkelsen; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mavis M. Mosolf was born September 4, 1936 in Bathgate, ND the daughter of the late Frederick and Elizabeth (Gebur) Mosolf. The family moved to Park River when Mavis was a small child. She grew up and attended school in Park River, graduating from the Walsh County Agricultural School in 1954. Mavis worked at Service Dry Cleaners in the alterations and sewing department until the store closed. She continued to do alterations out of her home until moving to the Good Samaritan Center in December of 2012. Mavis also helped her mother clean the Federated Church in Park River. Mavis was a member of the Park River Federated Church. She loved crocheting, knitting and sewing. She was known to go to the bakery at least a couple of times a day for coffee and sweets. She was very kind hearted and loved to spend time with her nieces and nephews. Mavis is survived by her brother, James (Jean) Mosolf, Park River, ND; nieces: Bonnie (Jim) Nowell, Jody (Todd) Deibert, Diana (Randy) Hahn; nephews: Wayne (Barb) Brandvold, Michael Brandvold, Dale Brandvold and Aaron (Heather) Mosolf. Several great nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister and brother-in-law, Gloria and Burnett Brandvold, nephews: Ronald and Richard Brandvold and an infant sister. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Park River, ND. ![]() George H. Nelson, age 80 of Grafton, ND passed away on Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN. George H. Nelson was born March 23, 1939 in Auburn, ND the son of the late George and Ruth (Landowski) Nelson. He attended rural school near Auburn and in Grafton, ND. Following his education he farmed with his father for Alvin Lykken. George enlisted in the United States Navy and served in Minneapolis, MN working as an airplane mechanic. Upon his discharge he returned home and started farming. George was united in marriage to Charla Matcha on December 30, 1988 in Grafton. The couple made their home near Grafton. George retired from farming in 1994 and then worked for Lee Lykken. He was a member of the Grafton American Legion, AMVETS, life member of the Walsh County Gun Club and Grafton Eagles. George loved to be on the farm and tinkering in his shop. He could fix or build anything he set his mind to. He loved to fish and spend time with his children. George is survived by his wife, Charla, Grafton, ND; his children: Ventzi Nelson, Grafton, ND; Asya Nelson, Fargo, ND; his sisters: Charlotte Johnson, Adams, ND and Lori (Kevin) Suda, Mandan, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter, Larissa; sisters: Carol and Linda and brother Paul. Funeral services will be Friday, November 22, 2019 at 10:30 AM at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Visitation will be Friday for one hour prior to the service.
