 Alvin Peterson passed away July 30, 2022 at the Good Samaritan Center, Park River at the age of 91.
Alvin Edward Peterson was the thirteenth child born to Joseph and Emma (Skogstad) Peterson on November 6, 1930 on his parent’s farm, Shepherd Township, Rural Lawton, ND where he lived and farmed his entire life. He was baptized and confirmed at Vang Lutheran Church, rural Fairdale. He attended school in Shepherd Township through the 8th grade. After spending a year in the Korean War, where he was a battalion welder, he returned to Shepherd Township to farm with his father and his brother, Albert. He was member of the American Legion Post 147, Park River and served on the Shepherd Township Board for many years. Alvin was previously married and had three children: Michael, Darlene and Denise. Michael passed away August 23, 1969. In April of 1970, Grace Schmidt was hired as a housekeeper and to take care of the children. This was a good fit for the family. Alvin and Grace were married in their new home, on November 23, 1976. She was the light of his life and they enjoyed many happy years together. Alvin was a hardworking man, had a sense of humor, and liked to tell jokes, drink coffee and visit. He liked to play little jokes on his grand kids and great grand kids and enjoyed their laughter. Alvin is survived by his daughters: Darlene (Gary) Krom, Lawton, ND; Denise Sandford, Perham, MN. As well as his five grandchildren, Jennifer Krom, Stacy Sandford, Kyle Krom, James Sandford and Trevor Schmidt and three great-grandchildren: Teagyn Sandford, Blake McKusick and Gracelyn Krom. His step-sons: Ronald Schmidt, Tolna, ND; Warren “Gene” (Leslie) Schmidt, Moorhead, MN; his sister-in-law, Avis Peterson, Chico, CA and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael, parents, wife Grace, brothers and sisters: Peter (Ruby) Peterson, Clarence (Evelyn) Peterson, Ernest (Joy) Peterson, Edwin (Mabel) Peterson, Albert Peterson, Joel Peterson, Elda (Andrew) Flaten, Chester Peterson, Lillian (Chester) Hove, Violet (Steve) Meline, Ethel (Albert) Schuster and his twin brother, Allan Peterson. Funeral services will be Thursday, August 4, 2022 at 1:00 P.M. at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Vang Cemetery, rural Fairdale, ND. Military Rites will be provided by the Park River American Legion Post and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard.

 Eli Luke Wilcox, age 8 of Fordville, ND passed away on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at his home in Fordville.
Eli Luke Wilcox was born October 30, 2013 in Fargo, ND the son of Luke and Lacey (Groninger) Wilcox. He attended Fordville Elementary School where he had completed the 2nd grade. Eli loved to spend time outside with his family and listening to music, especially George Strait. He enjoyed attending his brother and sister’s ball games and the occasional trip with dad out to check cows. He was known for his infectious smile and long eyelashes and his giggle will be missed by so many. He is survived by his parents, Luke and Lacey Wilcox, Fordville, ND; his twin brother Liam, sister Sadie; his paternal grandparents: Gordon and Dori Wilcox, Douglas, ND; maternal grandparents: Dwayne and Jolene Groninger, Douglas, ND; maternal great grandmothers, Patricia Steckler, Killdeer, ND; and Isabel Groninger, Minot, ND; paternal great grandparents, Daniel and Gloria Lies, Douglas, ND along with several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal great grandfathers, Leonard Steckler and Herbert (Gene) Groninger and paternal great grandparents, James and Irene Wilcox. Funeral services will be Friday, August 5, 2022 at 2:00 PM at the Fordville Lutheran Church, Fordville, ND. Visitation will be Friday for one hour prior to the service at the church. Viewing and graveside services will be Saturday, August 6, 2022 at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Douglas, ND starting at 1:00 PM, burial at 2:00 PM. A lunch will follow at the Douglas Senior Center.  Mark Sagert, 62, died Friday July 29, 2022, with his family by his side in Grand Forks, ND at Altru Hospital.
He was born July 19, 1960, in Cavalier, ND to Reinhold and Joyce Sagert (Thompson). Mark spent most of his life doing what he loved most, working and farming. Some of his hobbies including fixing anything broken, cattle, and collecting old cars. His greatest blessings were his sons, Austin and Drew. He enjoyed devoting his time to work and his family. Mark also enjoyed attending the sprint car races in Grand Forks along with his diet Sunkist obsession. He loved cheering on the Cavalier Tornadoes at most sporting events even after his boys graduated. Mark was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He will be greatly missed by the surrounding communities. Mark is survived by his brother Keith (Marilyn) Sagert, sons Drew (Jadeyn) Sagert, Austin (Allie) Sagert, and Aunt Marian Raymer. He is proceeded in death by his parents Reinhold and Joyce Sagert, grandparents, and great grandparents. Memorial service will be held Thursday, August 4, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at the United Lutheran Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 3, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church.  Rodney Edwin Melland, 84, a life-long resident of Edmore, North Dakota, passed away peacefully, July 28, 2022, following a short illness, in First Care Health Center, Park River, North Dakota.
Rodney was born May 20, 1938 in Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake, North Dakota, the eldest child of Edwin B. and Anna Grace Stevens Melland. He grew up on a farm ¼ mile East of Edmore. He received his education at Edmore Public School, graduating in 1956. Following high school, he started farming with his father until his father’s passing in 1963, at which time, Rodney, and his younger brother Dennis, formed the Melland Brothers Farming Partnership. They continued farming until they both retired in 2007. He married Gail Patricia Haugen at Nekoma, North Dakota on June 7, 1958. Together they had two children, Natalie and Mark. Rodney and Gail retired in Edmore, preferring the rural lifestyle of North Dakota. Rodney was active in the community and served as rural fire chief for many years. He was an Edmore ambulance attendant for 25 years. He served on the Farmer’s Shipping and Supply Elevator Board for eight years, and served a term as its President. He also served as President, as well as other officer positions, of the Edmore Curling Club. The highlight of his life was being a member of the Edmore Curling Club team that won the United States National Curling Championship in Duluth, Minnesota in 1971. The team advanced to the World Curling Championship in Megeve, France, where they obtained the Bronze Medal. They then visited England and were guests of the Scottish curlers at Edinburgh, Scotland. Rodney and his brother, Dennis, returned to Geneva, Switzerland in 1972 and curled in the Swiss Crystal Cup. Rodney enjoyed playing guitar, country western music, listening hours a day, riding motorcycle, restoring antique automobiles, restoring Indian and Harley Davidson motorcycles. He enjoyed visiting with friends and truly loved his family. He enjoyed a trip with his entire family to Telemark, Norway in 2002. He was a kind, gentle person and gave much of his time volunteering at the Edmore Historical Society and the Edmore Baseball Park, during its construction period. Rodney was preceded in death by his father, Edwin B. Melland, on September, 20, 1963, his mother, Anna Grace Stevens Melland, on September 7, 2017, and his sister, Frances Ann Melland Anderson on April 7, 2022. Also preceding him in death were his grandparents, Oscar and Christina Hoium Melland, Andrew and Gunhild “Nellie” Kittilson Stevens, and a niece, Tamra Studsrud Mahone. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Gail Haugen Melland, Edmore, North Dakota, daughter, Natalie Melland, Fargo, North Dakota, son, Mark Melland, Edmore, North Dakota, grandchildren, Destiny Melland, Fargo, North Dakota, Issac Melland, Fargo, North Dakota, brother, Dennis (Jacquelyn) Melland, Park River, North Dakota, brother-in-law, John Anderson, Lakeville, Minnesota, two nieces, three nephews, and several cousins. Funeral services will be held at Concordia Lutheran Church, Edmore, North Dakota on Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be held at Tollefson Funeral Home, Park River, North Dakota, on Monday, August 1, 2022 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Wallace Joseph Feltman of Grafton, ND passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 28, 2022 at the Lutheran Sunset Home of Grafton surrounded by his family.
Wallace was born June 29, 1929 in Grafton, ND the son of Joseph and Selma (Schuster) Feltman. He grew up and attended school in Harriston District 121 and one year at St. Anthony School in Warsaw. He attended Minto High School for two years and Grafton High School where he graduated in 1947. Wallace was honored to receive his Bachelor of Science Degree from Mayville State University. Wallace was principal of Chase Elementary School for 28 years and director of the Summer Migrant Program for 22 years. He retired from teaching after 43 enjoyable years. Wallace had many passions; farmer, educator and community involvement including local and state PTA (Parent Teacher’s Association), and a member of state and national Principal’s Association. He spent 31 years on the Walsh County School Reorganization Committee, Minto Farmers Elevator Board and honorary Knights of Columbus. Wallace and Evelyn were married October 13, 1953 in Argyle, MN, the start of their 68 wonderful years together. They lived on the family farm near Warsaw until 1990. Upon retirement they moved to Grand Forks, ND for 25 years until returning to Grafton. Wallace is survived by his children: Marlin (Betty) Feltman, Grand Forks, ND; Diane (Bill) Christensen, Scottsdale, AZ; Cheryl (Curt) Stock, Fargo, ND; and Greg (Rondee) Feltman, Grafton, ND; eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Evelyn, brothers: Winslow, John, and Steve and sisters: Steffie, Rose, Jean, Luella, Madge, infant Cyrella and one grandson Michael. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, August 3, 2022 at 11:00 A.M at the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church of Warsaw. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9-11:00 AM at the church. Carolyn Anne Winkler, 78, of Cavalier, ND, passed away Monday, July 25, 2022, at Wedgewood Manor, Cavalier, ND. Carolyn was born January 18, 1944, at Altona, Manitoba to George and Yvonne (Martineau) Doyle. She grew up and attended school in the Leroy area. On March 22, 1962, Carolyn married Leonard Winkler at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Leroy. She worked in the meat department with Red Freschette at Lyle’s Jack and Jill for many years. She later worked at the Developmental Center in Grafton and retired after 20 years. Carolyn loved spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed walking, dancing, Bingo, word searches, and playing cards. She is survived by her children: Sandy (Norm) Becker, Cavalier, ND, and Darlene (Mark) Kihne, Tea, SD; grandchildren: Krystel Becker, Zach (Abby) Landon, and Anthony Kihne; step-grandson, Kenny Johnson; great-grandchildren: Avaya and Ryker Landon; siblings: Elaine Kalis, Mary Peterson, Jimmy Doyle, Frances Doyle, Junie Doyle, Ann Armstrong, Patricia Rodvold, Marie Kukuk, Grace Peletier, and Manny Doyle. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leonard; numerous sisters and brothers-in-law; and nieces and nephews who were very special to her.  Ronald Edward Carignan, 84, of Walhalla, ND, passed away Sunday, July 24, 2022, at the Pembilier Nursing Center, Walhalla, ND with his children by his side. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, July 29, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Boniface Catholic Church, Walhalla, ND. Ronald was born October 6, 1937, near LeRoy, ND, to Edward and Jennie (Koropatnicki) Carignan. He grew up in the Cavalier and LeRoy area and attended country school. When Ronald turned 18, he served in the United States Army for two years. On November 8, 1960, Ronald married Rosanna Brusseau at Olga, ND. After their marriage they lived and farmed in the Walhalla area. Ronald served on many boards in Walhalla. He was a 4th Degree Knight and financial secretary of the Walhalla Knights of Columbus Council 4485. Ronald enjoyed camping, fishing hunting, gardening, and spending time with family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His life was centered around family and faith. He is survived by his children: Roxanne (Wayne) Gapp, Wahpeton, ND; Randy (Bonnie) Carignan, Walhalla, ND; Renae (Jeff) Carpenter, Thompson, ND; Roger Carignan, Walhalla, ND; Russell (Kellie) Carignan, Grafton, ND; 22 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; siblings: Doreen Dettler, Louis (Lorna) Carignan, Jerry (Annette) Carignan, Larry (Colleen) Carignan, Diane (Pat) Melton, Corriene (Dennis) Miner, Connie (Tom) Eagan, and special friend, Cece Kryzsko. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosanna; parents; brother, Melvin Carignan and sister, Rita Zaharia.  Geraldine “Babe” McKenna Belzer, 86, of Cando, ND, passed away on Friday, July 22, 2022 in Bismarck, ND. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cando with Fr. Daniel Musgrave, celebrant, on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at 2:00 pm. An open house visitation wake will be held at the Belzer family home on Friday, July 29, 2022 from 6 pm to 9 pm. Babe’s funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Saturday, July 30, at 2 pm at the church with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Cando, ND.

He requested she be named for her mother, Geraldine Byrne McKenna. For many years she was called Baby G and finally, it was shortened to Babe. Babe had good memories of living in Brocket and Lakota, ND, where her dad, MJ McKenna, worked for the Great Northern Railway as a depot agent. However, her favorite town to live in has been Cando! She and her family moved to Cando in 1946, when Babe was ten years old and entering the 6th grade. She claims to have “fallen” for Terry Belzer that year! Babe graduated from Cando High School in 1953 and began training with the Sisters of St. Joseph School of Nursing that same year. She graduated in August 1956 and worked briefly at the hospital in Cando as an RN. Terry and Babe were married November 17, 1956 and became farmers with Terry’s parents, Julianne and Phil Belzer. Terry built two houses for their family of eight children during their life together. Besides tending to her motherly duties, Babe enjoyed time with her friends and had many hobbies: painting, doll making, trunk refinishing, wreath creations, quilting, writing and publishing two children’s books and music for the community and their church. In some of these endeavors, the help of Terry was essential (trunks)! He was known to exclaim, “This is no five-minute project, Babe!” Babe is survived by her five sons, Bruce (Suzan Houtz), Tom, Pat (Kim Neumann), Paul (Heather Kuklok), Dan (Tony Williamson) and three daughters, Tami (Dave) Gunter, Bernie (Dave) Tschider, Gretchen (Bill) Curl, son-in-law Tony Allmaras, and twenty-one grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, one brother Terry (Mary Ann) McKenna, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, MJ and Geraldine McKenna, her husband Terry and their infant son Kelly John, grandson Philip Belzer Tschider, sister Trudy Nygaard, sister Beverly Sundahl, and Phil and Julianne Belzer. She also loved and “lost” many dogs; her favorite dog was Maggie May!  Shirley Johanna Sigurdson, also known as Shirley Jo Ange, 85, died of natural causes June 23, 2022 at home in Seattle, WA. She was born October 20, 1936, in Walhalla, ND, the daughter of Thorberger and Ruth (Gestson) Sigurdson.
Shirley began life in Mountain, ND and moved with her family to Seattle, WA in 1942. She graduated from Ballard High School, Class of 1954 where she worked on the “Talisman” school newspaper leading her to take a course in printing and land a job as a printer for Sears Roebuck. Over her lifetime she participated in a myriad of clubs and civic organizations including Girls Club, Drill Team, All City Sorority Club, PTA Dance Committee, and being a Seattle Seafair Princess in high school. Later there were World and Trade Fair committees, lobbying in Olympia for the Democratic Party Committee, Icelandic Club, Nordic Heritage Museum, Seattle Swing Dance Club and quite a few others. She continued to support many of these organizations and more with donations and volunteering until shortly before her passing. Very much a people person, Shirley found her “calling” working in the food and beverage industry, leading to becoming Assistant Banquet Coordinator at the Fairmount Hotel in San Francisco and bartending in San Diego before returning to Seattle where she married Anthony (Tony) Ange and together they owned and operated Jacken’s Restaurant & Lounge. She then became president of Queen City Chapter of the American Businesswomen’s Association. Later she was manager/coordinator for Vance Corp. and Pioneer Corp. restaurants. Always one to buck the expectations of others, Shirley took flying lessons and became a licensed private single engine sea pilot. She bought her cabin on a sylvan acre and a half of beach property on Hood Canal where she was an avid boater and water-skier, hosting many great parties for her friends and family, while also allowing countless children (nieces, nephews, cousins, grands and their friends) to play freely in nature while she and her longtime companion Stan Broom (aka Uncle Stanley), taught them how to fish and harvest crabs, oysters and clams, as well as drive a boat and waterski. In her later years she travelled extensively, dancing her way across the globe with her Swing Dance Club until declining health led to settling down at home where she found she could still exercise her love of learning about new people and places in the countless books she would read. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her siblings, Kristine, Sam, Anna, Halldora, Ellen Lovisa, Donald, Elizabeth, Marino, Carolyn, Frances, Lavern, “brother/cousin” John, “sister/cousin” Flora, and significant other Stanley Broom. Surviving siblings are Sylvia, Jacque, and Harold. She is also survived by scores of nieces/grandnieces and nephews/grandnephews (and their friends) who will remember her generosity of time and spirit. There will be a graveside service and burial on August 1, 2:00 p.m. at Thingvalla Cemetery, 8453 129th Ave NE, Edinburg, ND 58227 For Seattle area folks there will be a memorial service on August 21 from 1-4:00 p.m. at the Ballard Elks Lodge, 6411 Seaview Ave NW, Seattle, WA 98107 Those who wish to remember Shirley in a special way may make gifts to the Thingvalla Cemetery Association or Mountain Cemetery in care of Lisa Byron, 8455 Hwy 32, Edinburg, ND 58227.  Yvonne G. Brakke, age 89 of Grafton, ND passed away on Monday, July 18, 2022 at Lutheran Sunset Home.
