 Dorothy L. Kalka, 86, formerly of Pembina, ND passed away Friday, December 31, 2021 at Valley Senior Living in Grand Forks, ND. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, January 7, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at the Assumption Catholic Church in Pembina, ND. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour before the time of services on Friday.
Dorothy was born August 27, 1935 at Pembina, ND to Amos and Nancy (Sandberg) Jerome. She grew up in Pembina and graduated from Pembina High School. On October 19, 1955, she married Walter “Laddie” Kalka in Pembina, ND. Dorothy worked as a telephone operator and later at Motor Coach Industries; she then operated a daycare in Pembina. Things she enjoyed were crafts, flowers, and working on family genealogy. In 2010, she moved to Grand Forks, ND. She is survived by her children: Jon Kalka, Pembina, ND, Mary (Craig) Knutson, Hudson, WI, Diane (Joel) Muir, Hallock, MN, Jerry (Lisa) Kalka, Cottage Grove, MN, son-in-law, Peyton Stanlake, Parkers Prairie, MN; grandchildren: Carl and Greta Knutson, Mariah Tvrdik (Scott Walker), Christina Tvrdik (Jr. Diehl), Nicholas Tvrdik (Vicky Townsend), Madison Muir, Kassidy and Colton Kalka, great-grandchildren: Sylvie, Wesley, and Gavin, step-grandchildren: Chelsey (Bryan) Burt, Chase Stanlake, Alexis Stanlake (Wyatt Grondahl). Also surviving are her step-great grandchildren, Harper, Rowan and Vienna, sister, Doris (Don) Swanson, and supportive friend, Jan Tweeten. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, Walter “Laddie”, daughter, Jan Stanlake, and great-grandson, Andrew Tvrdik-Walker, brothers: Leonard, Lavern, and Merle “Hona” Jerome, and sisters: Eleanor Tucker and Ruth Humble.

 Robert Paul Novak, age 56, of Grand Forks, passed away Monday, December 27th, 2021 in his home at Valley Senior Living Center.
Robert Paul Novak was born April 2, 1965, in Grafton, ND. He was the son of the late Vivian Novak, and Elaine Novak of Grafton, ND. He attended school in Grafton and received his GED. After high school, Robert enlisted in the Army National Guard. Later he was discharged from service after suffering with numerous physical and mental health issues. Robert enjoyed working and took pride in the various jobs he had over the years. Due to his physical and mental health issues, Robert struggled over the years and was limited in his ability to fully enjoy life. Robert loved watching sports of all kinds, especially football and hockey. His absolute favorite team was the Miami Dolphins. Robert also loved listening to music of all kinds and watching movies. He enjoyed playing cards and was also a pretty good basketball player in his day. Robert liked to make jokes and have fun. Robert is survived by his mother, Elaine Novak, (Grafton), brother, Michael (Maureen) Novak of Crookston, MN, sister, Carol Mikkelsen (Kent) of Langdon, brother, Gerald Novak, of Grafton, and Mark (Erika) Novak of Maple Grove, MN. He was preceded in death by his father, Vivian Novak. Robert was very proud of his nieces and nephews. Robert also had many extended family members and friends along with the amazing support services that he has received over the years. Robert’s family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation for all the doctors, nurses and care coordinators at Altru Hospital and Valley Senior Living Center that made Robert’s life better over the years with their wonderful and tireless support and love. Words cannot express our gratitude. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, January 15, 2022 at 10:00 A.M. at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Grafton, ND. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be at the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, in the spring.  Kenneth Alvin Osowski passed away December 21, 2021 at the age of 69. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather.
Ken was born on November 3, 1952 to Ambrose and Helen Osowski in Grafton, ND where he was a lifelong resident. Following graduation he worked at A&H Implement 1972-78, Altendorf Trucking 1978-82, self-employed 1982-2006, and Allen Collette Farms 2006-present. He was united in marriage to Debra Tisdale on Feb. 20, 1996 in Las Vegas. Ken was a well respected member of the community who was the most loyal, hardest worker one will ever find with a strong work ethic. He was a caring and gentle man who was loved and respected by many. When not at work, he could be found watching old re-runs of shows such as Gunsmoke or a sports game or tinkering on some project out at his farm. May God bless this incredible humble man! Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Debra of 25 years and children: Sarah (Brett) Knutson, Collin Osowski (Tarah) and Evan Osowski; six grandchildren; sister, Genny (Larry) Walz; one niece and two nephews. Charles William “Bill” Kingsbury, age 82 of Grafton, ND passed away on Thursday, December 16, 2021 at the Altru Hospital of Grand Forks, ND.
Charles William Kingsbury was born September 8, 1939 in Grafton, ND the son of the late Harley and Noela (Glenn) Kingsbury. He attended rural school at the Bell School and graduated from the Walsh County Agricultural School in Park River. Following his education he started potato farming with his father Harley. Bill was united in marriage to Joyce Rustebakke on June 16, 1963 at Elk Valley Lutheran Church, rural McCanna, ND. The couple made their home in Grafton and St. Thomas until 1967 when they moved to the family farm near Grafton. In 1991 the couple moved into Grafton where they have made their home since. Bill was an avid photographer. Spending much time shooting wildlife across the county, the North Shore, and all the beautiful North Dakota landscapes, especially his beloved Theodore Roosevelt National Park and Medora. He was a member of the Grafton Federated Church, Crescent Lodge & Kem Shrine along with numerous other local organizations and boards. He served as President of the Red River Valley Potato Growers Association. He served on the ND APUC Board, the Bank of North Dakota Advisory Board and a proud member of the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation. Bill is survived by his wife, Joyce of Grafton, ND; children: Barry (Leah) Kingsbury, Grafton, ND; Melinda (Les) Sauve, Forest Lake, MN; Joanna (Kevin) Etzler, Breckenridge, MN; his grandchildren: Amanda (Joe) Dosch, Brittany (Brady) Kays, Cody Kingsbury, Isaac, Heather & Holly Sauve, Andrew, Alyssa, Elizabeth & Emma Etzler, his great grandchildren: Noah, Robert and Dawson Dosch, his siblings: Linda (Don) Carlson, Meridan, ID and Joyce (Leo) Staskavige, Wenatchee, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Ralph and sister, Patti Ganyo. Funeral services will be Thursday, December 23, 2021 at 10:30 AM at the Grafton Federated Church, Grafton, ND. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton. Friends may also call at the church on Thursday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Crescent Cemetery in the spring.  Richard L. Meyer, 70, of Neche, ND passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 5, 2021, surrounded by his family at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital in Cavalier, ND.
Richard was born March 30, 1951, in Breckinridge, MN the eighth of ten children, born to Albert and Jessie (Astrup) Meyer. He grew up in Fairmount, ND and graduated from Fairmount High School in 1969. On June 12, 1969, he enlisted in the National Guard and attended Fort Leonard Wood, MO for basic training. He served in the military for over 20 years and was discharged as a Staff Sergeant. In the fall of 1969, he enrolled at NDSCS in Wahpeton. After completing his degree, he enrolled at Mayville Sate College majoring in Mathematics and Physical Education. His first teaching job was in Kindred, ND, where he also worked for Cenex doing the bookkeeping. In the fall of 1983, he moved to Neche, and began teaching at Neche High School, until it consolidated with Pembina and taught at North Border – Pembina until he retired in the Spring of 2016. He taught 38 years total and stated he was only going to be in Neche five years and yet ending staying many more. One spring afternoon, he stopped and asked a question, which led to his five years of driving semi for North Star Co-op. On February 3, 1984, he met the love of his life, Lois Humble at the VFW in Grafton, ND. They were married June 1, 1985. To this union, they were blessed with three children: Jessica, Paul, and Melissa. Richard enjoyed attending all his kid’s sporting events and activities. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 36 years Lois, children: Jessica, Neche, ND, Paul (Anne) Fargo, ND and Melissa, Cavalier, ND, grandchildren: Sophia, Caleb, and Oliver who were the apples of his eyes. Papa was his favorite title. He is also survived by his siblings: Gerald “Oz” (Mary) Meyer, Towner, ND, Robert “Tub” Meyer, Battle Lake, MN, Ronald “Butch” Meyer, Wayne “Jake” (Jet King) Meyer, Phyllis McMahon, David Meyer, and Rebecca “Becki” (Steve) Beach all of Fairmount, ND, sisters-in-law: Margaret Schmidt, Fargo, ND, Sharon Meyer, Sun City AZ, and Nita Meyer, Milbank, SD, brothers-in-law, Vincent Humble, Wahpeton, ND, Vernon (Linda) Humble, Cando, ND, Alan Adamsen, Grafton, ND, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, Albert and Jessie Meyer, brothers: Allan and Charles, sisters-in-law, Norma Meyer and Darlene Adamsen, brothers-in-law, Gerald McMahon and Michael Schmidt, and his in-laws, Howard and Frances Humble. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, December 11, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Nereus and Achilleus Catholic Church, Neche, ND. Visitation will be held Friday, December 10, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. rosary and vigil service at the church.  Emma M. Bennett, 72, of Walhalla, ND passed away Friday, December 3, 2021 at her home. Funeral service will be held Friday, December 10, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Walhalla Lutheran Church, Walhalla, ND. Visitation will be held Thursday, December 9th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will be held in the Vang Cemetery.
Emma M. Cox was born October 20, 1949 in Drayton, ND to James and Leota Cox. She attended two country schools and graduated from Drayton High School. Emma then attended Aaker’s Business College in Grand Forks, ND. She then worked at Montgomery Wards, before marrying Emmet Bennet on December 19, 1970 in Drayton. After their marriage they lived in Walhalla, where Emma worked at the Dairy Queen and Hwy 32 Diner. Emma enjoyed baking cookies and spending time with her family. She is survived by her husband, Emmet, sons: Bill Bennett, Cavalier, ND and Justin Bennett, Walhalla, ND. Preceding her in death were her parents, brother, Robert and his wife, Mary Cox. Lila B. Charon, 85, Fargo passed away Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at Bethany on 42nd, Fargo. Lila was born November 11, 1936 in Grafton, North Dakota to Wallace and Beatrice (Anderson) Ferguson. She graduated from Park River High School where she was the Homecoming Queen in 1954. She married the Homecoming King, Franklin Charon on June 7, 1954 in Warren, Minnesota. They lived in Grand Forks before moving to Fargo in 1959. Franklin passed away July 16, 2005. She was an amazing mother and was passionate in her faith in Jesus Christ. She is survived by her 4 children, Janel (Steve) Rozek, Fridley, MN, Gayle (Paul) Brant, Fargo, ND, Franklin (Ranae) Charon Jr., Fargo, ND, Greg (Tanya) Charon, Fargo, ND; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Judy Bjorge, Park River, ND and many nieces and nephews. Daniel Carvalho, 74, of Hoople, ND, passed away Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at the First Care Health Center, in Park River, ND. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 16, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 with a 7:00 p.m. memorial service at the First Lutheran Church, Hoople, ND.
Daniel S. Carvalho, Sr. was born March 6, 1947, at the Big Island of Hawaii, Hilo. At 13 years of age Danny and his friends started a band. At 14, he got a job modeling for TV commercials and fashion shows and continued this for 4 years. He was hired for Hawaiian Bandstand to be a regular dancer and musician. In 1964, Danny graduated from Farmington High School in Honolulu, Oahu. After graduation he joined The Construction Battalion for electrical engineering in all utilities and did this for five years. His work took him around the USA, South Pacific, and Asia. Danny then worked as a heavy equipment operator for all utilities for many years in Las Vegas, Nevada. On April 8, 2000, he met his first love, Ruth Tharalson Hall. Since 2014, he has resided in Hoople, North Dakota where he loved the peace and quiet. Over the years he played many musical instruments including guitar, baritone saxophone, trombone, and congas and other percussion instruments. As a hobby his passion was restoring old cars and hotrods. He is survived by his children: Daniel and Dana; four grandchildren, Jarrod, Samantha, Davis, and Carlena; three sisters and one brother, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents: Daniel and Delores; and two sisters and three brothers. My sweetheart of 21 years got his angel wings December 1, 2021. |
