 Maria V. Pokrzywinski, age 80 of Grafton, ND passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2022 at her home.
Maria V. Kamrowski was born on August 9, 1941 in Pulaski Township, Walsh County, North Dakota. She was born the daughter of the late John and Vivian (Duray) Kamrowski. Maria was born and raised in Walsh County. She attended grade school at St. Anthony’s Academy Convent School in Warsaw. Maria graduated from St. Benedict’s Catholic School of Crookston, MN. Maria united in marriage to Ron Pokrzywinski on August 5, 1963 in Warsaw, ND. They made their home in Hawley, MN until 1969 when they moved to the family farm near Warsaw. They farmed together for 40 years. She loved her life on the farm where she spent her free time gardening and mowing. Maria also loved to play cards and looked forward to the daily bingo in the Grand Forks Herald. Maria was a lifelong member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church of Warsaw. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Maria is survived by special family friends: Jason and Jodi Hefta, and their children: Megan, Jacob, and Lucas, Minto, ND; several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Ron, and her siblings. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, April 4, 2022 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church of Warsaw. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery in the spring.

 Nicholas Zaharia, 91, of Neche, ND and formerly Bathgate, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at Wedgewood Manor, Cavalier, ND. He was also under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Mass of Christian burial will be Monday, April 4, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at Sts. Nereus and Achilleus Catholic Church, Neche, ND. Visitation will be held Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. rosary and vigil service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Pembina County Faith in Action.
Nick was born January 5, 1931 to William and Dora Zaharia, in rural Pembina, ND. He grew up in the Pembina area attending country school and later attended the Walsh County Agricultural School in Park River, ND. He met Rita Carignan picking potatoes in the Walhalla area. They married October 6, 1952 settling near Bathgate where they lived at the “Old Demars Farm”, the “Home Place” and then ultimately at the Zaharia Farm. Nick raised livestock and farmed for over 70 years. He later moved into Neche, where he enjoyed visiting with neighbors and anyone passing by. Nick especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren, parades and the Pembina County Fair. He was a member of Sts. Nereus and Achilleus Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Nick served many years on the Pembina School Board and the Pembina Township Board. He was also a 4-H leader. Rita passed away February 4, 2021. Nick is survived by children: Mark (Joanne), Cummings, ND; Billy (Lorrie), Owatonna, MN; Danny (Jessie), St. Mary’s, KS; Jim, Nashville, TN; Tommy (DesaRae), Pembina, ND; Teddy, Bathgate, ND; Missy (Scott) Reck, Grand Forks, ND and Julie (Chad) Fraser, West Fargo; 26 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Mary and Ann, brothers and sisters in law. and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Proceeding him in death were his parents; son Edward; great-grandson Thaddeus and brother Mike.  John “Butch” Campbell, age 76 of Grafton, ND passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2022 at his home in Grafton.
John was born August 9, 1945 in Grafton, ND the son of the late Harold and Bertha (Samson) Campbell. He grew up and attended school in Grafton, graduating from Grafton High School in 1963. He was united in marriage to Judy Kearney October 22, 1964. He served in the US Army from 1964 to 1966 and spent one year in Vietnam. He then returned to Grafton and served in the Army National Guard for 16 years. Upon his return from Vietnam, he began working for HomeGas Corporation which eventually became Ferrellgas. He was united in marriage to Margaret “Maggie” Hershey, the love of his life, on January 18, 1986 in Grafton. He retired in the spring of 2006 after 40 years of service in Grafton and Grand Forks. Maggie passed away on December 3, 2015 and he continued to make his home in Grafton until the time of his passing. John was a member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Grafton where he served on the Cemetery Board and the Finance Council, among others. He was an active member of the Grafton American Legion Post #41 where he had served as Commander and worked as a finance officer for over 30 years. He was also a member of the VFW. John enjoyed golfing, fishing and playing cards with his friends and neighbors. He loved sports and rarely missed watching a Vikings game or a UND hockey game. John loved traveling with his wife, Maggie, and took many road trips to the east and west coasts to visit their children and grandchildren. John is survived by his children: Jody Campbell, Fargo, ND; Jamey (Heather) Campbell, Detroit Lakes, MN; Jeff (Joy) Campbell, Bothell, WA; Melissa (Jake) Uphus, Fargo, ND; step-children: Scott (Tanya) Hershey, York, PA; James Hershey, Elizabethtown, PA; 17 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; siblings: Mike (Teresa) Campbell, Moses Lake, WA; Roger (Lori) Campbell, Greenbush, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Maggie; brother, Robert “Joe”; sisters, Patricia, Ju and Susan; grandson, Joshua. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, March 29, 2022 at 11:00 AM at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Grafton. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Military rites will be provided by the Grafton American Legion Post #41 and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard. The service will be live streamed on the Tollefson Funeral Home Inc. Facebook page. Interment will be at the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in the spring.  James Alan McDonald, 91, passed away on January 8, 2022, at Wedgewood Manor in Cavalier, ND. Memorial service will be held Saturday, March 19, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bathgate Presbyterian Church, Bathgate, ND. Visitation will be held Friday, March 18, 2022 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service at the Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND.
James was born November 8, 1930, at Bathgate, ND, to Percy and Avis (Stratton) McDonald. He attended school at Crystal, ND, before moving to Neche, ND, where he attended country school. He went to high school initially at Bathgate and then later graduated from Park River, ND, high school. James then attended the State School of Science at Wahpeton, ND, for two years while also engaging in farming. His love of agriculture would continue throughout his life. In 1955, James enlisted in the United States Army and served for two years primarily at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. Following his service, he returned to North Dakota and joined his father’s farming operation. On November 1, 1959, he married Myra Miller in Hazen, ND. During the early years of marriage, James would farm from spring to fall and then work as a truck driver in the winters living in Grand Forks, ND. He would continue to farm until retirement. James and Myra have three sons, Landis, Stuart, and Jason. James was a member of the Bathgate, ND, Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder. He was also a member of the American Legion in Neche. James is survived by his wife of 62 years, three sons, Landis (Susan), Stuart (Margaret), and Jason (Pamela), and grandchildren, Ann, Connor, Katherine, Lilly, and Tyler McDonald. Preceding him in death were his parents, sisters: Lois (Lee Lembke) of Porterville, CA, and Nola (Bill Asher) of Las Vegas, NV. The family is very appreciative of the care he received at Wedgewood Manor while he lived there in Cavalier.  On Sunday, March 13, 2022, Melissa Sue Kuznia, 46 of Drayton, ND, gained her angel wings as she was surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.
Melissa was born on September 26, 1975 to David and Debra Kuznia in Karlstad, MN and lived in Drayton, ND, graduating from Drayton High School in 1994. She attended college at Northland Community and Technical College in Thief River Falls, MN and Northwest Technical College in East Grand Forks, MN. She recently went back to school to get her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND. Melissa worked many jobs in her life and her jobs were never about the work, it was about making connections with people. She loved her job at MTI where she worked for many years as a sales representative and assistant supervisor. She then started at Noridian Healthcare Solutions in August 2008 until the time of her death as a Provider Outreach and Education Representative where she educated providers and suppliers on the Medicare program. She also worked at the Grafton Blueline Club, Inc., from 2011 as a Site Gaming Manager at Last Chance Bar, until the time of her death. Melissa always had a twinkle in her eye, a megawatt smile that could light up any room, and an ability to make anyone around her feel like they were the most important person. She loved to laugh and was always making sure people around her felt included. She loved to gamble, a casino was always a short trip away. She enjoyed a good shopping trip, live music, bands, concerts, and sporting events. She never married and had no children but she was the love in so many lives and gave her love away so freely to those that were fortunate to receive it and we were all better for it. Melissa was very family oriented and loved spending time with her parents, sister, many aunts/uncles, cousins, and countless friends from coast to coast. Melissa is survived by her loving parents David and Debra Kuznia, Drayton, ND and her lifelong best friend and sister, Becky Kuznia, Fargo, ND along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and an endless amount of friends. Melissa is preceded in death by both sets of grandparents David & Rita Westerson and August & JoAnn Kuznia; aunts Alvina Krolak, Mona Rae Peterson, Linda Kiefat; uncles LuVerne Peterson and Gerald Schaefer, plus many friends and cousins gone too soon. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, March 19, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Edward’s Catholic Church, Drayton. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the service. Interment will in St. Edward’s Cemetery at a later date.  Cecil A. Watson was born April 1, 1931, on a farm near Bathgate, ND, the son of Bruce and Birdie (Bill) Watson. He died Friday, March 4, 2022, at the age of 90. He attended Ormley rural school for four years and graduated from Cavalier High School in 1949 and was the last surviving male of that class. He served in the US Navy as an aviation electronics technician and radioman on a flight crew from 1952 to 1956. Cecil received a Masters degree in engineering from NDSU, he taught at NDSU two years before returning to the farm near Bathgate, ND. While farming he served on the ND Wheat Commission for twelve years and was chairman of the national wheat organization US Wheat Associates promoting the use of ND and US wheat around the world. He received the ND governors Award of Excellence for traveling to 45 countries promoting wheat. He was a charter member of the Pembina County Historical Society and was president for several years. He also taught science at Neche High School for ten years. He held a private pilots license earned while he was in college in Fargo. He was a member of the Laverne J. Thompson Post 11 American Legion.
On September 6, 1952, he married his high school sweetheart Marilyn Eastman, in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Marilyn passed away on April 17, 2010. On February 13, 2013, he exchanged vows with Pat Shipp, a high school friend, in Santa Clarita, CA. Pat passed away July 10, 2020. Survivors include four sons: Daryl (Noel) Watson, Cavalier, ND; Charles (Sheryl) Watson, Bathgate, ND; Jerome (Jennifer) Watson, Farmington, MO; and Thomas Watson, Tempe, AZ. Grandchildren: Nicholas (Becky) Watson , Joseph Watson, Grand Forks, ND; Jordan (Natasha) Watson, Alex Watson, Cavalier, ND; Brandon Watson, Bathgate, ND; Zachary (Jackie) Watson, Doe Run, MO; Ben (Amber) Watson, Freeport, FL; Whitney Watson, Park Hills, MO; Brianna (Sam) Zozaya, Queen Creek, AZ; Ashlan (Daniel) Arenas, Hutto, TX. Great-grandchildren: Rylee, Reegan, Amaya, Meelah, Adrianna, Ellie, Kiera, Kallie, Teagen, Quinncy, Beau, Mila, Jackson, Samuel, Olivia and Wilder; Siblings: sisters, Betsy Lawrence, Cavalier ND; Muriel Devitt, Buffalo, MN; Beverly Guimont (Dave), Elk River, MN; and brother, Glenn Watson, Cavalier, ND. Sisters-in-law: Margit Eastman, Mayville, ND; Darlene Watson, Cavalier, ND; Pat’s daughters Christy and Cindy and families, and many nieces and nephews. He was a member of Cavalier Baptist Church and served on the church board for many years. He put his trust in Jesus as his savior when he was 12 years old. His favorite Bible verses were Ephesians 2 verses 8 and 9. Missions were important to him, and he served on the mission committee of the church for over 40 years. He was giving support to 11 missionary families, some for over 50 years. Preceding him in death were his parents; wives, Marilyn and Pat; sister, Frances; brother, Dale; great-grandson, Conner; sister-in-law, Jan Watson; brothers-in-law: Rev. Danielson, 55, of Walhalla, ND passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at Sanford Medical Center, Fargo, ND. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, March 7, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Boniface Catholic Church, Walhalla, ND. Visitation will be held Sunday, March 6th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church.
Julie A. Herman was born May 20, 1966 at Cavalier, ND to Lynn and Sharon (Verville) Herman. She grew up in Walhalla, ND and graduated from Walhalla High School. She worked at various jobs in Walhalla and most recently worked at Marvin Windows in Grafton, ND. On August 2, 1991, she married Terry Danielson at Roseau, MN. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, hunting, loved animals and cruising on the Ranger. She is survived by her husband, Terry; children: Kevin Kalis and Brandon Danielson (Lauren Swanson), all of Walhalla, ND, Andrew (Ashley) Danielson, Colfax, ND; grandchildren: Kayleigh Kalis, Carley Kalis, John Kalis, and Kelly Danielson; her mother, Sharon Fowser, Jordan, MN. Also surviving are her siblings: Jeff (Vicki) Herman, Lisa (Larry) Poole, Angela (Jason) Schueller, Kristina (Mark) Halverson, Sophie Herman, and Sarah (Justin) Price. Preceding her in death were her father, Lynn Herman, son, Kelly Kalis, and step-father, Dale Fowser. |
