 Twyla Ester Brown was born on September 30, 1967. She left us while sleeping peacefully and journeyed to the Spirit World on June 30, 2021, at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks ND at age 53 years old.
Twyla’s Wake will be held on Wednesday, July 7th at the Fort Totten Recreation Center beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a time of prayer and remembrance at 7:00 p.m. The procession to Fort Totten will leave at 4:00 on Wednesday from City Plaza, Devils Lake. The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, July 8th at 10:00 a.m. at the Fort Totten Recreation Center with Reverend Anthony Samy officiating. She will be laid to rest in St. Jerome’s Cemetery, Crow Hill. Twyla was the daughter of She attended school at Oberon Elementary School, then continued at the Kicking Horse Job Corp in Helena MT, receiving her GED in 1988. She was not done learning and in 1992-1993 attended Cankdeska Cikana Community College and graduated with an Associate Degree in Business Administration and Accounting. She then attended the Haskell Indian Junior College and earned her AAS in Office Technology and Data Processing. Twyla then began a long work career with the Spirit Lake Tribe. She worked at CCCC as a Title III secretary, with the Spirit Lake Tribal Water Resource, Spirit Lake Finance Department and 2002 at the Spirit Lake Little Hoop College as a Secretary, later at Felix Restaurant, Spirit Lake Tribal assistance secretary, Spirit Lake Tribe Little Hoop data entry and file clerk, CCCC student apprentice and most recently in 2017 at the Spirit Lake Casino as a front desk clerk and night auditor. She resigned to take care of her 5 grandchildren Helena, Gabriel, Haleigh, Tayvias and her special baby boy Caius, that she took as her son. Twyla had many memorable moments with her grandchildren. Twyla was a very dedicated loving grandmother. She treasured her grandchildren and embraced every moment with them. She was a fun loving and caring sister, aunt, grandma, and mother. She was always willing to help anyone out whenever she could. She was always a great listener and gave great advice in any situation. Most of all she loved her grandchildren and her son Steven, trying so hard to put him on the right path in life. Twyla loved to cook and kept an immaculate house. She enjoyed her weekly outings with her sister Gwen and family. She enjoyed watching the Green Bay Packers play and was a very dedicated fan. She also enjoyed binge watching her favorite up-to-date moving “Pretty Little Liars” and “The Walking Dead”. Twyla enjoyed listening to her 80’s music, watching “Pretty In Pink”, “Breakfast Club”, Weird Science” and “Dirty Dancing”. She had fun playing Coin Masters and word trip games on her phone. She enjoyed problem solving situations. She like anything challenging. Twyla was highly intelligent in finding new ways to surprise everyone she met. She loved joking around with family, especially her niece Kimberly. She also enjoyed watching Jason Feather Jr. and Jonathan Pero play high school basketball. She loved spending time at her sister Gwen’s place, having movie night with the family. Her trip to Las Vegas in March was an incredibly special time. Twyla always enjoyed anyone’s company. She made friends everywhere she went. Twyla will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. She was an incredible mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin and dear friend. Our beloved Twyla is survived by her mother Clara Brown; children Steven A. (Berdina Fox) Demarce, Pierre SD, Marlene (Jeremy Dauphinais) Demarce, Fort Totten; grandchildren Terrance Demarce, Elijah L.A. Demarce, Helena Demarce, Gabriel Blueshield, Haleigh Blueshield, Tayvius Demarce, Caius Demarce, Xavier Demarce; adopted children Michael McGee, Indica Fox, Summer Fox, Jason Feather Jr., Jace Feather, Dolen Richotte, Victoria Feather, Kris White and Jonathan Pero Jr.; uncle Francis Brown; sisters and brothers Larina Bugg, Lenore WhiteLightning, Elaine Brown, Steve Brown Jr., Stephanie Ramōn, Jackie Peltier, Gwen Brown and James Brown; many nieces and nephews and special nieces that were always around her Maureen Brown, Nikoni Brown and Roberta Christianson. She was preceded in death by her Dad, Stephan A. Brown Sr., husband Jason B.  How surreal this is, to be writing about one of our favorite people--Joyce A. (Loughead) Iverson...the BEST wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandma, great grandma, aunt, sister and friend. At age 70, our courageous hero peacefully passed away on Wednesday, June 30th, 2021 with her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren by her side. She fought a vicious battle against advanced lung cancer, then bone cancer, a new lung cancer, followed by lymph node cancer and lastly, brain cancer, but she WON. At the time of her passing, our hero had no active cancer. Unfortunately, the toll of this vicious battle left her very physically weak and short of breath. Her mental strength and clarity, however, never wavered. A true testament to the strong, resilient person that she was; strong, sharp and caring up to her last moments on this earth!
Our favorite person was born on February 26 (1951) and according to her, this was always the best day of the year. Her parents were Joseph and Alma (Odden) Loughead (known by most as Ga-Ga); and she was the last of 10 children, leaving behind her sister Lois (Lloyd) Peterson (Grand Forks, ND); her brothers Joey (Sandy) Loughead (Grafton, ND) and Jerry Loughead (Park River, ND) and many, many nieces and nephews. She grew up and attended school in Park River, earned her GED and attended/graduated from Aakers Business College in Grand Forks, ND. In the summer of 1971, Joyce began dating Larry A. Iverson and they married on December 3rd, 1971; they spent 49 wonderful years together creating a beautiful family, which was Joyce’s proudest accomplishment. She always referred to us as “The Iverson 5.” Since then, we have added many wonderful people to our original 5. Her family: Larry A. Iverson, her forever companion; their oldest daughter, Tammy and her husband, Jason McMillian and their 4 children Cody (Emily) Boyle, Misty (Jimmy) Praska & Drew & Maci McMillan; their middle child, Lori and her husband, Cory Seim and their 3 children Nicholas Mathern, Caden & Kaylee Seim, and the caboose, their son Larry J. and his wife Kirissa Iverson. She was also blessed with 5 great grandchildren: Caprice, Poppi, River & Sage Praska and Gi Gi Boyle. She loved being a part of all of our lives. Joyce had a variety of work experiences over the course of her life, but she was proudest of being part of the First Care Health Center Family because her co-workers made her feel valuable, needed and important. Looking back, everywhere she worked, she helped people in our community whether at the Life Skills and Transition Center, Park River Good Samaritan Center, First Care Health Center or even as owner/operator of the Club Bar in Park River, ND. Joyce had a huge presence and family was so important to her. There were many things that brought her happiness, but being surrounded by good times and laughter from the people who meant the most to her was what really lit up her world. For this reason, she loved all family get-togethers and the holidays, especially Christmas and the Fourth of July. As Joyce's family grew, so did her activity list. She loved attending all events from birthday parties, to dance recitals, to sports events, family graduations and weddings. She was and will forever be the glue to our family, our family matriarch, our brave, courageous hero. Joyce will be welcomed in heaven by several family members, including her parents; sisters Joanne (Adrian) Denault, Marilyn (Woody) Sculthorp; brothers Wilber Stenerson, Alan Stenerson, Willard (Barbara) Stenerson, Jimmy Loughead, and her best friend Nancy Peterson. Memorial Services will be Monday, July 5, 2021 at 2:30 PM at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Park River. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Inurnment will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery, Park River.  Deborah Morin was born July 13, 1951 at Fort Totten ND. She was called Home on Saturday, June 26, 2021 at her home in Devils Lake.
She was the daughter of the late Frank Morin and Betty (Jetty) Morin and sister to Andrew Morin Sr., Charles Morin (deceased) and Kevin Morin, Mary Frances (Morin) Herman (deceased), Patricia Walking Eagle, Marsha Morin and Bonita Morin. She had two children Della Rose Felix (deceased) and Everett D. “Sonny Bear” Felix Jr.; six grandchildren Shanelle, Skyla, Tevin, William, Joshua and Jacoby; great grandson Oliver. Deborah is preceded in death by her father Frank, mother Betty, sister Mary Frances and younger brother Charles, her one and only daughter Della Rose, maternal and paternal grandparents, nephews Andy Morin Jr. and Delana Gaking, many aunts, uncles and cousins. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 1, 2021 at 11:00 am. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with Reverend Paul Schuster celebrating the Mass. Burial will be with her daughter Della Rose in St. Michael’s Cemetery. The procession to St. Michael will leave at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday from City Plaza in Devils Lake. Urn Bearers will be Josh Felix and Jacoby Smith.  Debra “Debbie” Voeller, 60 of Wahpeton ND passed away June 28, 2021 at Eventide Devils Lake Care Center.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday, July 6th, 2021 at the Ramsey County Event Center, rural Devils Lake at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Jim Paulson officiating. Burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery. Debra “Debbie” Patricia White was born on April 18, 1961 to Darral and Ruth (Bishop) White. She grew up in Maddock ND and received her GED. She married Robert “Bob” Voeller on October 3rd, 1980 in Towner ND. The couple lived in Rugby and later moved to Devils Lake in 1990. Debbie had four children, Michelle, Kristy, Jessica and Jason. Later, she met her partner and best friend, Dean Kraft, after she moved to Wahpeton in 2002. Debbie worked various jobs over the years including a cook, clerk, stock person, blackjack dealer and working with sugar beets. In her free time, she enjoyed playing bingo, going to the casino, traveling, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed crocheting blankets for her children, grandchildren, and other loved ones in her life. Debbie is survived by her children, Michelle (Shawn) Hill, Kristy (Eric) Thompson, and Jason (Ariel Paulson) Voeller, all of Devils Lake, her partner and best friend, Dean Kraft of Wahpeton, three grandchildren, Arianna and Nate Hill and Kiara Thompson, sisters Elaine (Bruce) Mickelson of Yuma, AZ, Sharlene (Gary) Hoffart, Hankinson, ND, Delores Schill of Lakeview, MN, and Dorothy White of Jamestown, ND, five nieces, one nephew, one great niece and three great nephews. Debbie was preceded in death by her daughter Jessica Rae Voeller and her parents Darral and Ruth.  Elmer J. Schill, age 79 of Minto, ND passed away at Lutheran Sunset Home on Sunday, June 27, 2021.
Elmer was born on October 19, 1941 in Langdon, ND to the late William and Mary (Kordosieur) Schill. He grew up in Hannah, ND and attended and graduated from St. Alphonsus Catholic School in Langdon, ND. After graduating, Elmer and his brothers farmed together until 1980 in the Hannah area. Elmer met Shirley Broeffle and they married on September 27, 1980 in Cloquet, MN. Elmer and Shirley moved to Grafton in 1980, where Elmer worked for the Life Skills and Transition Center. In 1997, Elmer and Shirley moved to Minto and he began working for Cenex. Elmer was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Grafton. He loved to be outdoors and working in their garden. He was a wonderful woodworker and enjoyed making things for his home and family. If there was one thing he loved the most, it would be his grandchildren; he adored being their grandpa. Elmer is survived by his wife, Shirley; children: Kurt Pierson, Superior, WI; Kim (Lynn) Thorvilson, Seattle, WA; and Karla (Dave) Lund, Fargo, ND; grandchildren: Alyssa, Luke, Ian and Ari; siblings: Leona Schneider, Walhalla, ND, Dorothy Saurer, Langdon, ND, Wilfred (Sue) Schill, Langdon, ND, Dennis (Diane) Schill, Langdon, ND, Pat (Dennis) Domagala, Langdon, ND, and Betty (Larry) Otteson, Wisconsin. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary. Per Elmer’s wishes, there will not be any public services at this time.  Jimmy Bakken, age 61, of Fairdale ND, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Friday June 25th 2021.
Jimmy Dean Bakken was born on January 31st,1960 in Minot ND to the late Gilman and Isabelle (Lemmage) Bakken. Jimmy was the 8th of 10 children. The family lived in Wilton ND, moved to Stanton, ND; where Jim started school., When the Nekoma Missle Base started construction moved to Milton ND.; where Jim graduated. Jim enjoyed playing basketball in high school scoring the most points in a game. This was when the buckets were counted as 2. He met the love of his life, Judy Samuelson, at the 1978 girls basketball tournaments in Adams. She moved up a row and ‘accidentally’ sat in his lap. Jim worked as a welder at Fargo Tank in Fargo, ND. He worked for the Samuelson Dairy farm for a year. Six months after Judy’s graduation, Jim and Judy were married at the Adams Mountain Lutheran Church, in Adams ND on November 22, 1980. They joined in with Judy’s parents Grade A dairy farm milking cows. When Judy’s dad passed away in 1984 in 1986 they sold the cows. Jim worked at a gas station in Park River and he spent some time in Killdeer working as a carpenter. They purchased Judy’s family farm in 1988. In 1990, Jim joined the Union in Fargo ND as a Millwright, working on equipment at the Sugar Beet plants. He transferred his Union book to Bismarck ND and worked in the upper Midwest on the Power Plants . One of his accomplish-ments was to be the Crane operator when loading a Generator onto a trailer to be sent for repairs on Russia’s Worlds Largest Cargo Jet He was forced into retirement due to many medical conditions Jim was a Cub Scout leader, A member of the Grace Free Lutheran Church council, He enjoyed fishing and teaching others to fish. He was an avid hunter of deer, turkeys, pheasants, antelope, taking his family Elk hunting in Colorado, and took special pride in bringing the first gopher shot into the Edinburg Hardware store, earning himself a box of 22 shells many years. He was a member of the men’s and couples bowling leagues in Adams. He taught them how to process the meat they harvested and make sausages to enjoy all year . They would raise or buy pigs and process them at home. Jim enjoyed entering demolition derbies in the area and racing his 1969 Chevy Nova. Jim is survived by his wife Judy, 2 sons; Jamie (Amy) Isabelle and Silas of Kindred ND, and Jeremy of Fairdale. Siblings; Joanne Kelly, Fargo ND, Diana (Dean Zuraff) Bossert, Mandan, Larry Bakken, Steven’s Point WI: Danny (Dianne)Bakken, Stanton ND; Bonnie (Myron) Harsch, Coleharbor ND; Linda (Ron) Kendall, Big Lake MN; Terry (Laurie) Bakken Killdeer/Garrison ND, and Randy (Melissa) Bakken. Jim was preceded in death by his parents one brother, Jerry, father in law, Reif (Bud) Samuelson; and sister in law Darlene. Inurnment will be at West Adams Lutheran Cemetery.  Lynn P. Woinarowicz, age 55 of Grand Forks, ND passed away on Friday, June 25, 2021 at the Altru Hospital of Grand Forks, ND.
Lynn P. Woinarowicz was born April 22, 1966 in Grafton, ND the son of the late Roman and Eloise (Wesolowski) Woinarowicz. He graduated from Grafton High School and attended Mayville State University for one year. Following his education he moved to Grand Forks where he worked for Comfort Inn and UND. In 2006 Lynn’s health forced him to move to Valley Eldercare where he has lived since. Lynn loved music and even wrote some of his own songs, he was a movie buff and enjoyed history. Lynn loved Jesus and had a very strong faith. He served as Past President of the Resident Council at Valley Eldercare. He enjoyed his relationships with all the people he knew there. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff at Valley Eldercare for the many years of faithful service to Lynn. Lynn is survived by his siblings: Mark (Tammy) Woinarowicz, Spring Creek, NV; Rachel (Barry) Lund, Mount Washington, KY; Becky (Ken) Wilson, Castle Rock, CO; Denise Henriksen, Caledonia, ND; Kelly Woinarowicz, Grand Forks, ND; Roman (Cheryll) Woinarowicz, Oslo, MN. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, June, 29, 2021 at 10:30 A.M. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Grafton, ND. Visitation will be Tuesday for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery.  Rose Heintz, 104 of Devils Lake ND passed away Friday, June 25, 2021 at Eventide Devils Lake Care Center.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, July 6, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Devils Lake with the Very Reverend C.F. Wilhelm celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Visitation will be held on Monday, July 5, 2021 at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. with Reverend Mr. Ken Severinson, Deacon officiating. Rose Elizabeth was born to Theodore and Margaret (Schneider) Heilman on November 23, 1916 in Devils Lake the 8th of 12 children. She attended elementary school there through eighth grade. In her late teens she moved to Minneapolis MN for two years and worked as a housekeeper. She returned from there and married John Heintz, Jr. in October of 1937. They had two children, Jerry and Rosalie. While living in Devils Lake she worked at various restaurants, the Lunch Box and the Two Spot, among others. Rose is survived by her son Jerry of Kansas, daughter Rosalie of Devils Lake, one granddaughter, one great grandson, one great-great grandson, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter-in-law Joan Heintz, four brothers and seven sisters.  James W. Otto, age 85 of Fargo, ND and formerly of Edinburg, ND passed away on Thursday, June 24, 2021at Sanford Health in Fargo.
James W. Otto was born February 9, 1936 in Osnabrock Township, ND the son of the late William and Kathleen (Wild) Otto. He attended rural school there and graduated from Milton High School. Following his education he enlisted in the United States Army and served in Germany from 1956-1958. Upon his discharge he returned to the Milton area where he worked with his uncle Clarence Otto doing construction and masonry work. James was united in marriage to Lois Stegman on December 29, 1965 in Cavalier, ND. In 1966, the couple moved to Edinburg where he continued his work in construction in the Milton/Osnabrock and Fairdale area. He retired in 2017 and the couple moved to Fargo in May of 2018. James was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church where he served on the church council. He enjoyed trading trade tokens and refinishing furniture. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved spending time with his grandkids. James is survived by his wife, Lois, Fargo, ND; children: Patti (Ken) Novacek, Mayville, ND; Michael (Paula) Otto, Park River, ND; Lisa (Tom) Steinolfson, Colfax, ND; seven grandsons: Nathan (Shelly), Darren (Kim), Jason (Katelyn), Max (fiancé Melissa) Sam (Whitney), Ben (Whitney), Dillon (Courtney); five great grandchildren: Tucker, Paxtyn, Maddyn, Harper and Hailey; brother, Duane (Beverly) Otto, Langdon, ND; along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, uncle Clarence, brothers: Robert and Richard and sister, Mary Louise. Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 30, 2021 at 1:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church, Edinburg, ND. Visitation will be Wednesday for one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the Edinburg American Legion and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard. Lawson Roger Thumb, precious son of Levi Thumb and Lisa Robertson was born sleeping on Thursday, June 24, 2021 at 1:25 a.m. at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks ND.
His family was so looking forward to bringing this little one home to Oberon to become the newest part of their loving family. This beloved child of God is survived by his parents Levi and Lisa; paternal grandpa Elvis (Phaedra) Thumb Sr.; paternal grandma Michelle Myrick; maternal grandpa Galen Robertson; maternal grandma Shelly Luger; maternal great grandparents Barbara Robertson, Richard Charboneau, Phyllis Luger and Beverly Luger; paternal great grandparent Pauline Myrick; aunts and uncles Bailey Thumb, Elvis (Tara) Thumb Jr., Joseph Thumb, Gabriel Jackson, Brock Wolford, Brady Wolford, Braxton Luger, Miranda Belgarde, Sydney Luger, Sophie Robertson, Bella Ridley and Payton Fassett; many dear and special great aunts, great uncles and cousins.
