 Dennes L. Papenfuss, 88, of Cavalier, ND passed away Monday, December 30, 2019 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND. A memorial service will be held Friday, January 3, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Lutheran Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 2nd from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Cavalier Ambulance Service, Cavalier Fire Department, or the United Lutheran Church.
Dennes Lee Papenfuss was born July 25, 1931 at Glasston, ND to Erwin and Cecelia (Sellheim) Papenfuss. He grew up in the Hamilton, ND area and graduated from Hamilton High School in 1950. Dennes then served in the U.S. Navy as a Fireman First Class during the Korean Conflict until his discharge in 1954. In 1956, Dennes married Doris Finnson in Milton, ND. After their marriage, they moved to Fargo, ND where he attended Moler Barber College. He barbered in Cavalier for 49 years. He was a member of the United Lutheran Church for over 60 years, serving on the church council. He also was a member of the Cavalier American Legion for more than 60 years. Things he enjoyed were deer hunting with his sons, he also loved sports especially Twins baseball, Duke basketball, and Eagles football. He also enjoyed going to auctions and raising cattle on his hobby farm. Survivors include his children: Denise Papenfuss, Diane (Paul) Brown, all of Cavalier, ND, Kathy (Mark) Lowe, Bismarck, ND, Kurtis Papenfuss, Grand Forks, ND, and Brad (Laurie) Papenfuss, Portland, ND; grandchildren: Julianne (Garrett) Horntvedt and Lydia Lowe, Bismarck, ND, Jacob Papenfuss, Fort Drum, NY, and Marley Papenfuss (fiancé, Alex Hair), Washburn, ND; great-grandsons: Oliver and Theo Horntvedt, Bismarck, ND. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Doris; brothers: Clemeth, Louis, and Earl; twin sisters: Norma “Sis” Thorlakson and Nira “Dolly” Fredericksen.

 Wilma O. Gemmill, age 80 of Edinburg, ND passed away on Friday, December 27, 2019 at the Park River Good Samaritan Center.
Wilma O. Momerak was born May 20, 1939 near Park River, ND the daughter of the late Vilhelm and Odelia (Dahl) Momerak. She attended school in Park River. Wilma married Gordon Gemmill on November 24, 1956 in Park River, ND. The couple lived on the Gemmill Farm near Edinburg until 1958 when they purchased their own farm. The couple lived and farmed near Edinburg until 2004 when they moved into town. Wilma cooked at the Amundrud Café and the Borg home in Mountain, ND. She later did home care in Arizona, California and Walhalla. Gordon passed away on December 28, 2011. Wilma moved to the Good Samaritan Center in November of 2019. She was a member of the Grace Free Lutheran Church and WMF. She started the Women’s quilting group at Grace Free. She was a member of the Edinburg American Legion Auxiliary. She loved to spend time with her family. She is survived by her children: Karen (Bruce) Langerud, Gardar, ND; Linda (Leslie) Moe, West Fargo, ND; Mary (Kent) Laxdal, Edinburg, ND; Betty (LeRoy) Nelson, Edinburg, ND; Barbara (Chris) Kendall, Milton, ND; Ron (Jeanette) Gemmill, Edinburg, ND; 18 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, siblings: Ordean (Darlene) Momerak, Minot, ND; Leonard (Adele) Momerak, Grafton, ND; Bernice (Ed) Pengilly, Langdon, ND. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, grandson, Jason Kendall, great grandsons: Jayden Nelson and Curtis Matthew Laxdal; brothers: Harvey and Wally and sister, Donna Evenson-Mertens. Margery Lee Steenerson, 90, passed away peacefully at Valley Senior Living in Grand Forks, North Dakota on December 26, 2019 surrounded by her loving family.
Margery was born in Drayton, North Dakota on July 17, 1929, daughter of Lee and Barbara Cochran. She attended Drayton Public School, graduating in 1947 and then attended Aaker’s Business College. On September 22, 1949 she married Marlin Steenerson in Drayton. Over the years, Margery worked at local grocery stores, Erickson’s Clothing and Drayton Discount, as the bookkeeper. Margery was a member of Drayton United Methodist Church, UMW and also a member of the Rosebank Rebekah Lodge of Drayton. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother and will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Family members include her children, Tom (Doreen) Steenerson, Grand Forks, ND, Nancy (Dan) Anderson, Cavalier, ND and Barbie Steenerson, Drayton; grandchildren, Lisa (Travis) Bursinger, Grand Forks, Chris (Tiffany) Steenerson, Grand Forks, Amy Gierszewski, Grand Forks, Devin (Alesha) Gierszewski, Portland, ND and Brady Steenerson, Grand Forks, ND; brother, James Cochran, Drayton; brother-in-law, Don (Kathy) Steenerson, Grafton; sister-in-law, Carol Steenerson, Fargo; and several great grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the service.  Frank Miller, of Clarkfield, passed away on Wednesday, December 25, 2019 at the Granite Falls Hospital at the age of 69.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 3, 2020 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Montevideo with Father Paul Timmerman presiding. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 PM on Thursday, January 2 at Anderson - TeBeest Funeral Home in Montevideo with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Robert Franklin Miller (Frank), born in Cody Wyoming, November of 1950 passed away December 25th, 2019 at the Granite Falls Hospital after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. Frank, as he was known to his friends and family, was adventurous as a young man. The road he traveled took him to North Dakota, where he met his beautiful wife Mary Lou Jarolimek. They were married in 1974 and the product of their blissful 45 year marriage was 5 wonderful children; (his favorites) Julie, Lyle, Nathan, Kiley and Emily. The young couple with their first three children struck out on their own and moved the family to Colorado where Frank accepted a position as a manager at a local bean elevator near Windsor. They lived there for many years and welcomed their two youngest daughters into the family. In 1990 Frank was hired to manage Walton Bean Company which brought them to Clarkfield, MN. There he served on the fire department for 17 years. Seeking adventure in 2000, Frank and Mary Lou, with their oldest daughter Julie, opened Miller’s Family Restaurant in Clarkfield, which they operated for many years. He loved people. He was very social in the community and loved to travel. Frank was a devoted family man and delighted to share stories about his children and grandchildren at any opportunity. Everyone who knew Frank, remembered him for his authenticity, generosity, and kindness. He had a special skill that allowed him to get to know people and make everyone comfortable around him, he loved to listen to others. He treasured his 11 grandchildren, making them cookies for any occasion and finding the most thoughtful gifts. Frank could fix just about anything, was an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing his yearly bounty of fresh garden vegetables and canned goods with family and friends. Frank is survived by his wife Mary Lou; five children: Julie (Mark) Bukowski of St. Leo, MN; Lyle (Jessica) Miller of Rochester, MN; Nathan (Tegan) Millbright of Portland, OR; Kiley (Shane) Zinter of Thief River Falls, MN; Emily (Chris) Boedigheimer of Park Rapids, MN; and 11 grandchildren: Patrick (Marissa), Trystan and Jade Bukowski; Dylan, Boaz, Patience, and Temperance Miller; Ayden, Gavin, and Kamryn Zinter; and Luka Boedigheimer; brother Don Miller of Burlington, WY; two sisters Sharron Britton of Bosie, ID and Claudia (Clyde) Box of Merritt Island, FL; and numerous family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Patrecia (Lyle) Johnson, and Raymond Miller; brother Jack Miller; and sister Carmen Johnson.  Isabel Margaret (Izzy) Collette, age 93, died after Christmas Mass on Wednesday, December 25, 2019 at the Lutheran Sunset Home.
Isabel was born May 2, 1926 to Alcidas and Margaret (Krier) Corriveau, at Oakwood, ND. She was educated at and graduated from St. Aloysius Academy in Oakwood. On September 8, 1948 she was married to Maurice D. (MD) Collette at Sacred Heart Church, Oakwood. They were lifelong sweethearts and were married 71 years at the time of her death. They were lifelong members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. In 1953 MD and Isabel adopted a daughter, Bonnie Bea. A son, Donald David was adopted in 1956. Isabel was a hard-working farm wife and homemaker. She also had several part-time positions at Grafton businesses. She enjoyed golf, curling, gardening and entertaining family and friends. She was a member of the Oakwood Homemakers Club and Sacred Heart Altar Society. She volunteered at the Lutheran Sunset Home and St. Aloysius Academy where Bonnie and Donald attended school. The couple retired from farming in 1991. In 2015 they moved to an apartment at Leisure Estates in Grafton and subsequently into the nursing home. Isabel is survived by her husband, Maurice D. Collette, her children: Bonnie Kavanaugh (Jim Field), Fargo, ND; Donald (Karen) Collette, Hanceville, AL; two granddaughters: Jaime (Layne) Donovan, Virginia Beach, VA; Amanda (Frankie) Dyer, Centre, AL and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Norbert Corriveau; grandson, Nicholas Collette and son-in-law, Tom Kavanaugh, Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at 10:30 AM at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Grafton, ND. Visitation will be Tuesday for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Oakwood, ND in the spring. Memorials are preferred to the North Dakota School for the Blind, Adult Services Program 500 Stanford Road #A, Grand Forks, ND 58203. The family extends their thanks to the staff and Leisure Estates and Lutheran Sunset Home for the excellent care they provided to Isabel. She always said, “They take good care of us here.”  Mary E. Monette, 68, of Cavalier, ND. passed away Tuesday, December 24, 2019, at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, December 28, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Brigid of Ireland Catholic Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held Friday, December 27th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. vigil service at the church. Burial will be held in the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Olga, ND.
Mary Elizabeth Beaudoin was born April 20, 1951 at Grafton, ND to Donald and Helen (Crawford) Beaudoin. She grew up and attended school in Cavalier. On May 13, 1977, she married Robert J. Monette in Cavalier. They lived in Cavalier after their marriage, where she operated a home daycare. She loved raising her children as well as those children who came to her daycare. Mary then worked at the Developmental Center in Grafton, ND, while there she enjoyed her clients and transitioning them into the workforce. Things she enjoyed were cross stitching, canning, and baking. She is survived by her children: Tammy Brooks, Devils Lake, ND, Dawn (Sean) Fraser, Cavalier, ND, Daniel (Michelle) Monette, Reynolds, ND, and Gary Monette, Cavalier; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and siblings: Marlene (Rick) Dorion, Marlys (Ken) Billings, Margie Marciniak, and Mike (Becky) Beaudoin. Preceding her in death were her parents, Don and Helen and her husband, Robert.  Arline Delna Larson, age 91 of Adams, ND passed away peacefully on Dec. 20, 2019 at the Park River Good Samaritan Center.
Arline Delna was born August 13, 1928 in Adams ND the daughter of Melvin and Olga (Bolstad) Hilde. She graduated from Adams High School and Moorhead State College. She taught first and second grade in Bisbee, ND until marrying Dennis Larson in 1951. They farmed in Bisbee before moving to Adams and taking over the Hilde farm until 1996. Arline taught Title 1 and subbed in Adams for several years. Arline was a member of Adams Mountain Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Adams Kraft Club and Walsh Quilters. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, gardening, canning and playing cards with her grandchildren. Arline is survived by her husband Dennis of 68 years, her children: Sharon (Ray) Callaghan, Fargo, ND; Merle (Joan) Larson, Adams, ND; Lona Lindgren, Sperry, OK, Avis Larson, Eden Prairie, MN; nine grandchildren: Megan, Brady and Casey Callaghan, Amanda Goll, Elizabeth Jacobs, Cole Larson, Kyle and Brendan Lindgren, Roxanne Boyce and 10 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, twin infant sisters and son-in-law, Rory Lindgren. Funeral services will be Saturday, December 28, 2019 at 11:00 AM at the Adams Mountain Lutheran Church. Visitation will be Saturday for one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be at West Adams Cemetery in the spring.  Joyce A. Gerszewski, age 77 of Minto, ND passed away on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at the Lutheran Sunset Home of Grafton, ND.
Joyce A. Maszk was born November 24, 1942 in Grafton, ND the daughter of the late Daniel and Irene (Kowalski) Maszk. She attended school in Minto, ND. Following her education she was united in marriage to Michael Gerszewski on July 25, 1960 in Minto, ND. The couple made their home in Minto. Joyce owned and operated Jo Jo’s Day Care in Minto and worked with her husband at the school in Minto, retiring in May of 2019. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Society and the Minto American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed crocheting and spending time in her flower gardens. Joyce loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Joyce is survived by her husband, Michael, Minto, ND; her children: Scott (Marilyn) Gerszewski, Curtis (Sandy) Gerszewski and Michele (Mark) Spale, all of Minto, ND; five grandchildren, four great grandchildren and half-brothers: Dale Maszk, Paul Maszk and Brian (Mary) Maszk all of Illinois. Zikmund, age 76 of Cando and formerly of Pisek, ND passed away on Tuesday, December 17, 2019 at the Towner County Living Center of Cando.
Maurice L. Zikmund was born on July 24, 1943 on the family farm in Prairie Centre Township, Walsh County, the son of the late Joseph A. and Lucy (Kouba) Zikmund. He attended country school and later Pisek High School. Following his education, he worked for several area farmers before starting farming in 1969. He was united in marriage to Deborah McCambridge Lietz on February 18, 1982 in Conway, ND. The couple made their home near Pisek and continued to farm until retiring in 1992. Following his retirement, he worked for Ayr Com installing fiber optic cables. The couple moved to Cando in 2010 and he moved into the nursing home in October of 2014. He was a member of the St. Luke’s Catholic Church of Veseleyville, the Knights of Columbus, the Park River Jaycee’s, several square dancing groups, and the NE North Dakota Pioneer Machinery Association. He enjoyed tinkering around the farm, working with his livestock and spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Deborah, Cando, ND; children: Michael (Jamie Thompson) Lietz, Grafton, ND, Tom Lietz, Midland, TX, Tammy Yarber, Fargo, ND, Lori (Jeremiah) Moen, Harwood, ND, Jason Zikmund, Grand Forks, ND, Kayla (Steve Martz) Zikmund, Fargo, ND, Daniel (Lyndsay Lopez) Zikmund, Park River, ND; 10 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; siblings: Marie Greicar, Lucy (Kevin) Fruhwirth, Vicky (Russell) Denault, sister-in-law Lorraine Zikmund as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son Maurice Jr., brother Joseph Zikmund, brothers-in-law Ben Greicar and Dennis Konze, and nephew Clair Greicar. Mildred Becker, 102, of Cavalier, ND, passed away Sunday, December 15, 2019, at the Borg Memorial Home in Mountain, ND. Funeral services will be Friday, December 20, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND with visitation from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be held in the Cavalier Cemetery.
Mildred was born November 10, 1917, in Antler, ND, to Edwin and Mathilda Johnson. She married Mervin Becker on May 10, 1936. They farmed primarily in Inkster and Hensel-Crystal and called both of those areas “home”. After Mervin’s death in 1979, Mildred moved to Cavalier and resided there until moving to the Borg Nursing Home in 2012. She was a member of the Cavalier Presbyterian Church. She found much joy in sewing, crocheting, playing the piano, cooking and gardening. She took great pride in her flowers, rock beds, and trees. Mildred may not have owned a cell phone, but she always gave her best smiles when asked to take a “selfie” with her great-grandchildren. She learned to play the piano by ear and entertained her family often with the “Beer Barrel Polka” even while living at the Borg Home. Her homemade lefse, doughnuts, bread and dumplings were always a treat for her family. Mildred lived a long full life and was cherished by all who knew her. She is survived by her children: Shirley Amundson ,Larimore, ND, Clark (Melva) Becker ,Inkster, ND, Myrna Becker, Phoenix, AZ, Gary (Patty) Becker, Crystal, ND. Her grandchildren: Bradley (Denise) Becker, Susan (Jeff) Trosen, Pamela (Gary) Lorenz, Denise (Peter) Sobolik, Corey (Rochelle) Becker, Tracy (April) Amundson, Jay Amundson, Lee Amundson, Maree (Shawn) Burke, Tony Flowers, Lance Raedel, Jeff (Shelly) Erlendson, Jennifer Erlendson. Many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. One sister, Pearl Lehman ,Little Fork, MN; two sisters-in-law: Dorothy Johnson, Devils Lake, ND and Doris Johnson, Cando, ND.
