Charles D. Dix

Charles D. Dix, 95, of Cando, ND passed away on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at the Towner County Medical Center in Cando.  Mass of Christian Burial will take place at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cando with Fr. Daniel Musgrave, celebrant, on Monday, November 2, 2020 at 3:00 P.M. Visitation will be held on Monday, November 2, 2020 at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. and also at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church from 2:30 P.M. to 3:00 P.M.  Music will be provided by The Freund Family and Gladys Fluge. Casket bearers will be Patrick Dix, David Dix and Charles Grandchildren. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Cando. Military Honors will be provided.

Charles Donald Dix was born September 2, 1925 in Cando, ND to Charles H. and Fay (Reid) Dix.  He attended 7 years at Prairie Rose School west of Cando and graduated from Cando High School in 1943.  He volunteered into the U.S. Navy in March, 1943 and after serving in the Pacific Theatre during World War II on a Landing Ship Tank in the Engineering Department.  He was discharged in October 1946 as a Motor Machinists Mate First Class.  After the Navy, he went to work for the Murray Funeral Home in 1948 and then went to attend Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago and the University of Illinois.  He graduated from Worsham’s in December, 1948, and continued on with the Murray Funeral Home of Cando, Rolla and Belcourt.  In July 1960, he moved to Jamestown and worked at the Daly Peterson Funeral Home for a brief period.  In September 1960 he moved back to Cando and built Dix Funeral Home which was opened on October 30, 1961 and operated until 1980, when it was sold to Chuck Dunnigan.  In 1968, seeing the need for good housing in Cando, in cooperation with the FHA through Rural Housing Act, constructed two 4-plexs and four 8-plexs in Cando so people could have a luxury apartment to live in. 
Being an avid hunter and sportsman, in 1950 he with the help of Harold Holien, formed the Dakota Rifle and Pistol Club and worked hard to see its completion.  Charles was the Past President of Cando Commercial Club, Past President of the Dakota Rifle and Pistol Club, Mayor of Cando from 1983-1990, Adjutant of Hal Parker Post #79, of which he was a member since 1946, past member of Cando Promotions, President of the Cando Centennial Committee, which was instrumental in acquiring the old First State Bank Building for the Cando Pioneer Foundation, member of the State and National Funeral Directors Association for many years and was a Past President of the Cando, Bisbee and Rock Lake Knights of Columbus.
Charles was united in marriage to Edith L. Ingeberg on September 15, 1951 and to this union four children were born, one daughter, Nancy and three sons, Pat, David and Mark.  They just celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary last month. 
Charles is survived by his wife Edith; daughter Nancy Orthman, Valley City, ND; sons Patrick and Ana Dix, Rock Springs, WY; and David and Maria Dix, Cando, ND and four grandchildren. 
He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Fay Dix; one son Mark, two brothers Arthur and Harry, sister Betty Hartl and son-in-law Carl Orthman.
