Vernon A. Gillespie, age 99 of Pisek, North Dakota passed away Friday, July 5, 2024 at the Park River Good Samaritan Center. Vernon Alexander Gillespie was born September 19, 1924 in Park River, North Dakota, the son of the late James and Mary (Duffy) Gillespie, who had immigrated from Isle of Islay, Scotland via Canada. Vernon attended and graduated from the Walsh County Agriculture School in Park River. He bred and raised Airedale Terrier dogs and sold them all over the United States. After his schooling he began farming and purchased the family farm near Pisek in 1968. Vernon was united in marriage to Virginia Kinney on January 6, 1957 in Lakota, North Dakota. The couple made their home on the family farm near Pisek where they raised their family. He also worked for the Grafton Developmental Center for 21 years. Virgina passed away January 6, 2015. Vernon continued to make his home near Pisek until moving to the Park River Good Samaritan Center in April, 2022. He loved spending time with his family, especially his wife, Virginia; farming, caring for his dogs and cats and watching sports, the Twins and Vikings. Vernon is survived by his children: Patricia Olson, Edinburg, ND; Kathleen Fleming, Yankton, SD; James (Rose) Gillespie, West Fargo, ND; Thomas (Josefina Martinez) Gillespie, Grafton, ND; Bradley (Lona Miller) Gillespie, New Effington, SD; his grandchildren: Jessica (Andrew) Olson, Alexander Olson, Tayler (Eric) Roth, Shelby Fleming, Lukas Fleming, Alejandro Gillespie, Hunter Gillespie, Thomas Gillespie and Amber Gillespie; great granddaughter, Kolbie Virginia Roth; niece, Mary Colleen Shostedt, Duluth, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 58 years, Virginia, an infant son, son Wallace Gillespie, son-in-law, William Olson, siblings: Sarah (Frank) Anzelc, Alice (Neil) Liming, Wallace Gillespie (WWII, 1945) and nephew Patrick Anzelc. Funeral services will be Saturday, July 13, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. at the Bethel Baptist Church, Park River, ND. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery, Park River.
