Valerian F. Schanilec, age 93 of Grafton, ND, passed away on Thursday, November 12, 2020 at his home. Valerian Schanilec was born April 19, 1927 on the family farm near Veseleyville, ND, the son of the late Anton and Elizabeth (Dusek) Schanilec. He attended country school near there. Following his education, he began farming. He was drafted into the US Army and served from 1951-1953, stationed at Osaka Hospital in Japan. Upon his discharge, he returned home to continue farming. He moved into Grafton in 1969. He was united marriage to Elaine Ganyo on June 6, 1980 in Grafton, ND. The couple made their home in Grafton following their marriage. He retired from farming in 1989 and continued to live at their home in Grafton. He was a former member of the St. Luke’s Catholic Church of Veseleyville and currently a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Grafton. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, a 57 year member of the VFW and a 59 year member of the American Legion. He enjoyed gardening, casino trips and farming. Val is survived by his wife Elaine and son Anthony, both of Grafton, as well as sisters Frances Kiedrowski, Minneapolis, MN and Alexia (Leo) Klava, Walker, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers-in-law: James Kiedrowski, James Ganyo, Richard Ganyo, and Jerome Ganyo; and sister-in-law Lois Ann Melland. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, April 30, 2021 at 10:30 A.M. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Grafton, ND. Visitation will be Friday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at St. John's Catholic Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the Grafton American Legion and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard. The family would prefer that those attending please wear face masks.
