Larry F. Durand, age 78 of Grafton, ND passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2020 at the Unity Medical Center of Grafton, ND. Larry Francis Durand was born June 4, 1941 in Grafton, ND the son of the late Wilfred and Arbella (Demers) Durand. He attended school in Oakwood, ND, Kelso, WA and graduated from Grafton High School in 1959. After a short time in the US Navy he enrolled at Mayville University in the fall of 1961, graduating in 1965 with a BS Degree in Business and Music. He received a Masters Degree in Education from NDSU in 1970. Larry began his work in education in the fall of 1965 and continued for 45 years, serving as Superintendent for 33 years. He also served as the coordinator for the Northern Red River Valley ITV System for a number of years. Larry married Shirley Demester on August 19, 1967 in Grafton, ND. They made their home in Braddock and Hoople before moving to Grafton in 1975. Larry and Shirley enjoyed camping and traveling in their motor home wintering in Arizona and California. Larry was an avid golfer and was a member of the Fair Oaks and Larimore Golf Clubs. He loved to spend time with his two granddaughters. Larry is survived by his wife, Shirley, Grafton, ND; daughter: Jaime (Chris) Mattson, Grafton, ND; two granddaughters: Alyza and Brynnlie; brother, Lloyd Durand, Madison, WI: and sister-in-law, Patty Durand, Oakwood, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Todd, infant sister, Angeline and brother Melvin. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at 10:30 AM at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Grafton. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton, ND. Friends may also call at the church on Wednesday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at St. John’s Cemetery, Grafton, ND in the spring.
