John “Butch” Campbell, age 76 of Grafton, ND passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2022 at his home in Grafton. John was born August 9, 1945 in Grafton, ND the son of the late Harold and Bertha (Samson) Campbell. He grew up and attended school in Grafton, graduating from Grafton High School in 1963. He was united in marriage to Judy Kearney October 22, 1964. He served in the US Army from 1964 to 1966 and spent one year in Vietnam. He then returned to Grafton and served in the Army National Guard for 16 years. Upon his return from Vietnam, he began working for HomeGas Corporation which eventually became Ferrellgas. He was united in marriage to Margaret “Maggie” Hershey, the love of his life, on January 18, 1986 in Grafton. He retired in the spring of 2006 after 40 years of service in Grafton and Grand Forks. Maggie passed away on December 3, 2015 and he continued to make his home in Grafton until the time of his passing. John was a member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Grafton where he served on the Cemetery Board and the Finance Council, among others. He was an active member of the Grafton American Legion Post #41 where he had served as Commander and worked as a finance officer for over 30 years. He was also a member of the VFW. John enjoyed golfing, fishing and playing cards with his friends and neighbors. He loved sports and rarely missed watching a Vikings game or a UND hockey game. John loved traveling with his wife, Maggie, and took many road trips to the east and west coasts to visit their children and grandchildren. John is survived by his children: Jody Campbell, Fargo, ND; Jamey (Heather) Campbell, Detroit Lakes, MN; Jeff (Joy) Campbell, Bothell, WA; Melissa (Jake) Uphus, Fargo, ND; step-children: Scott (Tanya) Hershey, York, PA; James Hershey, Elizabethtown, PA; 17 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; siblings: Mike (Teresa) Campbell, Moses Lake, WA; Roger (Lori) Campbell, Greenbush, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Maggie; brother, Robert “Joe”; sisters, Patricia, Ju and Susan; grandson, Joshua. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, March 29, 2022 at 11:00 AM at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Grafton. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Military rites will be provided by the Grafton American Legion Post #41 and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard. The service will be live streamed on the Tollefson Funeral Home Inc. Facebook page. Interment will be at the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in the spring.
