![]() Daniel J. Shoults, age 57 of Grand Forks, ND, passed away peacefully with family at his side on Thursday, November 5, 2020 at Vibra Hospital of Fargo, ND. Dan was born October 28, 1963 in Grafton, ND, the son of the late Hilary Shoults and Ruth Shoults Gornowich. He was a graduate of Minto High School and Thief River Technical School with a degree in Radio Broadcasting. Dan enjoyed his radio DJ years at KZZY in Devils Lake, ND. He then went to work as a transportation specialist at Valley Memorial Homes in Grand Forks and became known as “Dan the Van Man.” Dan enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins, listening to all types of music, Starbucks coffee, and hosting trivia at the El Roco in Grand Forks. Dan is survived by his siblings: Marge (Warren) McFall, Bill (Diane) Campbell, Peg (Roger) Shaver and Beth (Lory) Bylin; his sisters-in-law Barb Campbell and Lisa Shoults; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and brothers: Joe Campbell, Jim Campbell, Bob Campbell and Paul Shoults. A private memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at 10:00 AM at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton. A public visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Inurnment will be open to the public at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery of Minto following the service. Masks will be required and social distancing guidelines will be followed.

![]() Janice M. Wysocki, age 82 of Minto, ND passed away on Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at the Unity Hospital of Grafton, ND from a rare form of cancer. Janice M. Phelan was born September 5, 1938 in Walsh Centre Township, ND the daughter of Jerome and Rodell (Morris) Phelan. She grew up and attended school in Minto and later attended Aaker Business College in Grand Forks. Janice was united in marriage to Leonard “Sonny” Wysocki on November 26, 1956 in Minto, ND. The couple made their home in Minto where Janice worked for a time as farm labor, beet truck driver, ceramic teacher, staining and wallpaper business and in the greenhouse at Grafton Floral. Janice was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Society in Minto, the Minto American Legion Auxiliary and the Red Hat Society of Grand Forks. She loved to g arden and work in her flower beds. Her flower beds were her pride and joy and added much beauty to their yard. She was an excellent seamstress and made many prom dresses and favorite pajamas for all her grandchildren. In her spare time she enjoyed quilting, embroidering, reading and doing the crossword every morning in pen. Her biggest joy was her family. Janice was always happiest with her house full of her children and grandchildren. She was a mom/grandma that made it to every event possible whether it was a sporting event or a dance recital. She will be greatly missed. Janice is survived by her husband of 63 years, Leonard, Minto, ND; her children: Len (Janet) Wysocki, Grafton, ND; Brian (Sheri) Wysocki, Minto, ND; Shelly (Gary) Syverson, Bismarck, ND; Sharlene (Randy) Knutson, Erskine, MN; eight grandchildren: Corey (Chelsea) Wysocki, Andrew (Samantha) Wysocki, Ethan Wysocki, Erin & Abby Syverson, Jake Knutson, Kelsey (Austin) Tadman, Jaycee Knutson; great grandchildren: Graycie, Zaiden & Emma Wysocki, and Grayson Wysocki. Janice was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Gerald and sister Clariss. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, November 14, 2020 at 10:30 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Minto. Visitation will be from 9:00 – 10:30 A.M. at the church. Covid-19 restrictions of up to 50 people will be followed and face masks are required. Interment will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery of Minto, ND. A video of the funeral service will be available on Janice’s obit page on the funeral home website. Doris Harriet Skavhaug, 94, of Park River, ND passed away on November 4, 2020. Doris was born on Nov 7, 1925 in Vergas, MN to Gilbert Paul Nelson and Mabel (Johnson) Nelson. She attended Newbre Country School and later attended high school in Southam, ND. She was a member of Sarepta Lutheran Church, rural Adams and Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Park River. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Doris lost her mother when she was 9 years old. She then learned to make bread and other baking which led to her love for baking and cooking throughout her lifetime. She made wonderful buns, kolachi's and cinnamon twists! Doris married Leonard Ellefson on January 25, 1944. They made their home in Edmore, ND. They were blessed with four children: Sheldon Wayne, Randi Kaye, Rodney Lynn and Tammy Rae. They moved to Lawton, ND where Doris managed and cooked at the Lawton Cafe. She met many wonderful people in Lawton and the surrounding area including the high school kids who came to the cafe after school for a place to hang out. They played the jukebox and danced and Doris sometimes danced with them. They had fun! Doris married Alden Skavhaug of Adams, ND where they made their home and farmed for several years. They were blessed with two sons: Kevin Lynn and Colin Lane. Doris moved to Park River, ND in 1967 where she was head cook at the Walsh County Ag School. She enjoyed her job at the high school and talked about it often during her lifetime. She loved the students and oftentimes referred to them as 'her kids.' She did custodial work for several businesses in the area. She became a QSP and provided for many people over the years. She loved her clients and their families. Doris enjoyed several hobbies: baking, sewing, music and reading (she especially enjoyed Laurraine Snelling books). She played the guitar, piano and accordian - all by ear! At family gatherings the three Nelson sisters (Doris, Lila & Gladys) would often sing and harmonize while the family gathered and listened. She enjoyed simple carpenty. When she had a project to be done, she enjoyed the challenge. She loved what she did and she did it well. She worked until she was in her late 80's. When Doris lost her son, Rodney Ellefson, in 2014 her heart was broken. She grieved like she loved - very deeply. She moved to the Good Samaritan Home in Park River in 2017 and lived there until the time of her death. She loved her family and friends but above all, she loved the Lord. Funeral services have been postponed until the summer of 2021.![]() Antoinette “Nettie” M. Greicar, age 105 of Pisek, ND, passed away on November 4, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Society of Park River. Antionette (Nettie) Marie Cicha passed away Nov 4, 2020. She was born on a farm in rural Lankin to Frank V. and Mary (Uhlir) Cicha. After graduating grade school, Nettie worked as a mother’s helper, working on various farms. One season she worked on a threshing crew as a cook on the Greicar farm where she met this tall charming man named Charles. They married July 27, 1936 in Pisek and started raising their family of eight. They lived and worked on the Greicar family homestead being the third generation to live there. Times were hard but working together, their strong faith helped them make a good life on the farm. Every year Nettie would have a large garden which she would spend her days canning vegetables to last through the harsh ND winters. In 1969 the Greicar homestead was sold, so Dad built a house in Pisek, but retirement was not in the picture. They were hired by Walsh County as park managers of the Homme Dam. Charles and Nettie worked there for 9 years returning to Pisek to start retirement in 1979. Charles got sick with cancer and after fighting the big C for 2 and ½ years he left us in 1986. Nettie continued to live in Pisek, keeping herself busy growing a magnificent flower and vegetable garden every year. She loved sewing and made many quilts. She crocheted many doilies which received Blue Ribbons at the Walsh County Fair. Nettie’s hands were never idle as she continued to crochet covers for clothes hangers. She continued mowing her own lawn until 98 years of age when her sons took her lawnmower and ladders so she wouldn’t climb on the roof to clear snow. Nettie was a member of St John’s Nepomucene’s Church and Altar Society of Pisek. Pisek American Legion Auxiliary, and the Park River Senior Citizens Center She was devoted her life to her religion and was firm and her faith. Her pride and joy were her family. She was a hardworking, loveable woman with a kind generous spirit. She loved playing the card game Kings in the Corner and usually won too. Nettie is survived by her children Joann Votava, Park River, ND, Irene Anderson, Columbia Falls, MT, Lorraine (Joe) Trouba, Ray, ND, Evelyn (John) Wineski, Park River, ND, Charlie (Maryann) Greicar, Bismarck, ND, Donny (Sherry) Greicar, Park River, ND and Mary Lund, Park River, ND; 23 Grandchildren, 47 Great Grandchildren and 16 Great Great Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Allen, Grandchildren: Adrienne Anderson, Timothy Greicar, Andrew Greicar, Kinley Jelinek, and Gary Votava; Siblings Frank J, Mary, Agnes, Anna and John. Mass of Christian Burial will be held privately at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church of Pisek, due to COVID restrictions. Interment will be at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Cemetery. Memorials can be directed to St. John Nepomucene Catholic Cemetery, Pisek Volunteer Fire Department, Park River Ambulance, First Care Health Center, or Good Samaritan Society in Nettie’s memory. A Celebration of Nettie’s life will take place once COVID restrictions have been lifted. ![]() Maurice David (MD) Collette, 94, of Grafton, died Nov. 3, 2020, at Lutheran Sunset Home, Grafton. He was born Sept. 19, 1926, to Alcide and Beatrice (DeSautel) Collette, of Oakwood. He was educated at and graduated from St. Aloysius Academy, Oakwood. On Sept. 8, 1948, MD married Isabel M. Corriveau at Sacred Heart Church, Oakwood. They were lifelong sweethearts and were married 71 years at the time of her death in 2019. In 1953, they adopted a daughter, Bonnie Bea. A son, Donald David, was adopted in 1956. MD farmed his entire life in the Oakwood area, raising potatoes and wheat. He served on many boards and associations. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, curling and golf, celebrating a hole in one at the Grafton golf course. The couple were snowbirds for many years, spending winters in Mesa, Ariz. He retired from farming in 1991. In 2015 they moved to an apartment in Leisure Estates, Grafton, and subsequently into the nursing home there. Isabel died in December 2019. MD is survived by his children, Bonnie Kavanaugh (Jim Field), Fargo, and Donald (Karen), Hanceville, Ala.; two granddaughters: Jaime (Layne) Donovan, Virginia Beach, Virg., and Amanda (Frankie) Dyer, Centre, Ala; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, sister; Evelyn McCarty, grandson Nicholas Collette, and son-in-law Tom Kavanaugh. A private family service will be held on Friday, Nov. 6, at Tollefson Funeral Home, Grafton, with burial following at Sacred Heart cemetery, Oakwood. Czapiewski, 99, of Oslo, ND passed away Tuesday, November 3, 2020 in Aneta Parkview Health Center in Aneta, ND. Harry Raphael Czapiewski was born on December 28, 1920 in Walshville Township in Walsh County North Dakota. He was the son of Alozi and Stella (Riske) Czapiewski. He was raised and educated in Walshville Township. Upon the completion of his education, he farmed with his brothers, Florian and Ernest. Harry married Margaret Paschke on November 25, 1961 in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Warsaw, ND. Harry farmed until his retirement in 1985. However, Harry continued with farm work well into his 90’s, helping his sons on the farm. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening even after retirement. On November 25, 2020, Harry and Margaret would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; a daughter, Audrey (John) Saunders, Brooklyn Park, MN; his sons, Lee (Sheila) Czapiewski, Oslo, MN, Michael (Jennifer Lunde) Czapiewski, Grand Forks, ND, Larry (Kelly McGlynn) Czapiewski, Oslo, MN and granddaughters, Leann, Jamie and Sara. Due to COVID-19 Concerns: masks and social distancing are recommended. ![]() Robert LeRoy Quackenbush, 85, of Cando, ND, formerly of Rock Lake, ND passed away on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 at Sanford Broadway Medical Center in Fargo, ND. Private family services will be held. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Cando. Military Honors will be provided. Bob was born on 2-17-1935 in Cando, ND to Raymond and Evagene (Osborn) Quackenbush. Bob was raised on a farm in the rural Crocus area where he also attended school. Bob was united in marriage to Ilene Lindenberg on November 5, 1953. To that union four children Robert Jr. Jeanie, Pamela, and Susan were born. Bob joined the US Air Force in 1954. He took an early discharge in 1959 to return home to help on the family farm due to his step-fathers Herald Snavely deteriorating health. Bob continued to farm until 1982. After he retired from farm, he drove school bus, and also worked at the Rock Lake Cenex driving the bulk truck. For several years Bob cared for his wife, Ilene, who had suffered a stroke. In 2020 Bob sold his home in Rock Lake and moved to Cando. Bob could be found at the Rock Lake Cafe every morning playing cards. He was also an avid hunter. Above all, Bob loved his family and made many sacrifices for them. His grandkids and great-grandkids brought him so much joy. He usually had a child or two on his lap, whether it have been a little one or a big one. Bob is survived by his wife Ilene, children Robert Jr. (Shelly) of plains, MT, Jeanie (Tim) Wiener of Rock Lake, Pamela (Jeff) Berg of Webster, ND, Susan (Pat) Flanagan, of Hillsboro, ND. Eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. and two sisters Sandra (Morris) Parvey of Ramsey, MN, and Marcia (Lawrence) Thiel of Bottineau, ND. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Raymond Quackenbush, and James Snavely, and one grandson Kyle Quackenbush. ![]() Rodger D. Carlson, age 79 of Park River, ND, passed away on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 at the Sanford Hospital of Fargo. Rodger Carlson was born May 20, 1941 in Maddock, ND, the son of the late Edward and Emma (Hjelden) Carlson. He grew up and attended school in Maddock. Following his education, he began trucking. He later moved to Montana where he worked for Farmer’s Union, Conoco and the Ford Garage. He was united in marriage to Dianne Aabrekke on August 6, 1963 in Wolf Point, MT. The couple moved to Maddock, ND in 1981 where he farmed with his nephew and brother-in-law. They moved to Park River in 1985 and he began working for Heritage Ford and Glen Porter until his health forced him to retire in 1993. He was a member of the North Viking Lutheran Church of Maddock. He enjoyed hunting and working on cars. Rodger is survived by his wife Dianne, Park River, ND, daughters: Cindee (Lino) Hernandez, Bancroft, WI and Carol Hagen, Forest River, ND; 5 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by his parents, son David in 2003, 4 sisters and 2 brothers. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery of Park River in the spring. Paul L. Hartje, 54, of Bathgate, ND passed away Sunday, November 1, 2020 at the Sanford Medical Center, Fargo, ND. A private service will be held at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church rural St. Thomas, ND. The public is invited for the committal service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 7th at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery. A public visitation will be held on Friday, November 6th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND. Masks and social distancing will be required.
Paul Leslee Hartje was born May 4, 1966 at Grafton, ND to Allen and Alice (Robinson) Hartje. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He grew up in the Glasston-St. Thomas area and graduated from St. Thomas High School in 1984. Paul then attended the AVTI in East Grand Forks for diesel mechanics. He then worked for various farmers in the St. Thomas area. After becoming an airplane mechanic at St. Simond's Island, Georgia, he worked at the airports in Northwood, ND and Brookings, SD. Paul also worked as an auto mechanic at Bruender's Corner Mart in Tyler, MN. Paul has been self employed at the Cavalier Airport until the time of his death. Keeping airplanes safe for people to fly was his top priority in his work. His love and specialty was working on crop sprayers for anyone, at anytime for as long as the job took. Things he enjoyed were snowmobiling, hunting, fishing and making homemade venison sausage. Paul was a simple man, however his hands and mind were gifted in fixing everything. Paul's gift to others has been lifelong. He became the ultimate giver of life in donation through Life Source. He loved his wife, children, family, and friends with all his heart. On November 12, 1999, he married Shelia Kemnitz at Northwood, ND. She survived him as do his sons: Gabriel Hartje (Sydney), Bathgate ND; Elijah (Rylan) Hartje, St. Thomas, ND, Zachariah Hartje (Jessica), Fountain CO; siblings: Teresa Perrault, Mark (Mary) Hartje, Steven Hartje, Dawn (Paul) Twenge, David Hartje, and Thomas (Wendy) Hartje. Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Gladys Kemnitz, brothers-in-law, Dennis Kemnitz, Rick (Sheila) Kemnitz, Perry Kemnitz (Val) and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; baby sister Leah, and many aunts and uncles. |
