With the words, “Good night Vonnie, I gotta go!” Donald Merlyn Hylden reached out his hand to his Savior Jesus Christ and bid farewell to those he loved. Don was born 11/17/1929 in the home on the 1881 original homestead farm to David W. Hylden and Alvina D. (Colsen). Don passed away at the First Care Health Center in Park River on 10/10/2020. He was the last surviving grandson of the pioneers in the Pleasant Valley farming community. He was baptized and confirmed at Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church of rural Park River. He attended Vernon Township country school and graduated in 1947 from WCAS where he was active in basketball, FFA and played the trombone in the band. Don farmed with his brothers after high school and then was drafted into the US Army. He served two years that included 8 months on the front line in Korea. Sergeant Hylden was honorably discharged in 1953. Don was happily married to LaVonne J. (Lykken) for 68 years; they were united on July 3, 1952. Donnie and Vonnie had three children: Mark (Esther), Daniel (Carol) and Julie (Peter) Sondeland. Their 8 grandchildren are Jordan (Emily) Hylden, Jarrod (Elise) Hylden, Justin Hylden; David (Sarah) Hylden, Elisa (Tim) Stamps; Sadie (Ben) Storhaug, Abbie (Jacob) Hays, and Aaron Sondeland. 12 great grandchildren: Charles and Donnie Hylden; Winnie, August and Peter Hylden; Arthur and Elinor Hylden; Sahara, Tristan and Silas Stamps; along with Hadlie and Haven Storhaug. Don served in his church as an officer and Sunday School teacher. He helped organize and was a charter member of Victory Free Lutheran Church after Pleasant Valley closed. Don was a past president of the Walsh County Farm Bureau, and a member of the local school board, Livestock association and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his parents David and Alvina, sister Dorothy Gronhovd and brothers Mike and Duane and granddaughter April Joy Hylden (Mark). The funeral will be at Victory Free Lutheran in Park River on Thursday the 15th of October at 2 PM. Visitation will be Thursday for one hour prior to the service at the church. Military rites will be provided by the Paul Farup American Legion Post and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard. The motorcade to the Pleasant Valley Cemetery will pass by the Pleasant Valley Church where the US Flag will be at half-mast to honor the last grandson of the pioneers. Memorials will be used to fund the purchase and installation of a US Flag at the cemetery. Due to Covid-19 social distancing and face masks will be required.

Marjorie Ann Johnston age 89 of Cando, ND passed away Friday, October 9, 2020. A private family service will be held on Sunday, October 18, 2020 with Rev. Bonnie Weaver officiating. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Cando, ND. Marjorie was born May 18, 1931 in Cando, ND to Herbert and Minnie (Hanson) Baeverstad. Marjorie attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. While there she sang for many events and continued singing throughout her life. On July 22, 1951 Marjorie married Harvey D. Johnston of Rolla, ND. They were married for 62 years. The couple farmed in the Cando area until they retired and enjoyed spending 13 winters in Texas. Marjorie was active in Cando Lutheran Church by teaching Sunday School, Bible School, Circle and WELCA. Marjorie is survived by her son Michael (Joleen) Johnston of Cando, ND; daughters Lisa (Rick) Soggie of Fargo, ND, Julie (Randy) Lemm of Hillsboro, ND and Nancy Jo (Larry) Kropp of Jamestown ND; grandchildren Calli Ann (David) Larson , Great Grandchildren Sawyer and Reese Larson of Clearbrook, MN; Elli (Luke) Ressler of Hillsboro, ND, Anna (Fiancé, Troy Wiegandt) Lemm of West Fargo, ND, Jill Johnston of West Fargo, ND and Andrew Nugent of Brookings, SD. Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband Harvey, her Parents, Sister Eileen (Robert) Corcoran and Brother Harold (Sally) Baeverstad. Hortensia "Marie" Guzman, age 84 of Laredo, TX and formerly of Grafton and Grand Forks, ND passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at her daughter’s home in Laredo, TX. Hortensia Sepeda was born June 26, 1936 in Dilly, TX, the daughter of the late Margarito and Aurora (Flores) Sepeda. Her family later moved to Crystal City, TX where she grew up. She was united in marriage to Pedro Guzman on January 12, 1953 in Crystal City. The couple lived there and in North Dakota until 1972 when they moved to Grafton, ND. The couple worked for Orville Gilleshammer Farms. Hortensia worked grading potatoes and driving trucks during harvest. She later started working at the Grafton Developmental Center and worked there until retiring at age 65. The couple moved to Grand Forks, ND. Pedro passed away in 1997. In 2016 she moved to Laredo to live with her daughters. Hortensia is survived by her children: Endenia Guzman, Laredo, TX; Celia (Arnold) Ramirez, Laredo, TX; Alonzo (Julie) Guzman, Grand Forks, ND; Fred (Sue) Guzman, Lakeville, MN; Peter (Marrilee) Guzman, Grand Forks, ND; Jesse (Irma) Guzman, Red Oak, TX; 17 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and sister, Irene Lara, Crystal City Tx. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and five sisters. Bjornson, 83, passed away on October 6, 2020 at his home in Grand Forks, ND. Kenneth was born on October 23, 1936 in Mose, ND, the son Sophus & Irene (Melland) Bjornson. Kenneth grew up in the area and attended schools in McHenry, ND. He was united in marriage to LaVonn A. Hovel on February 22, 1959, in Cooperstown, ND. Together they raised 3 children. They lived in Cooperstown, Hannaford, New Rockford and Park River before making Grand Forks their home in 1986. Kenneth worked many jobs all over the state. He worked on a farm, drove semi truck, drove greyhound bus, worked as a painter, worked on oil rigs and helped paint missile silos. Kenneth and LaVonn also attended AVTI together where they learned the art of truck driving. They later drove trucks as a team. He retired in 2006 as a driver with Trans-systems. He enjoyed gardening, caring for his flower beds, riding horses and tinkering in the shed. Kenneth is survived by his wife, LaVonn; daughter, Roxann (Randy) Johnson; son, Mitchell (Leslie) Bjornson; grandchildren, Brandon(Paige) Bjornson, Brittany (Davis) Bjornson and Benjamin (Jaden) Bjornson; brothers, Dennis, Ronald and Gerald; sister, Louan (Dale) Vigen; sister-in-law, Carolyn Bjornson and numerous nieces and nephews. A visitation will be at the funeral home on Monday for one hour prior to the service. Masks are required at the visitation and service. Harland was born November 19, 1980 in Cando to Terry & Rebecca (Johnson) Harland. Jason grew up and attended school in Cando. Jason enlisted into the US Army at the age of 18 and returned to Cando after being honorably discharged. Jason was united in marriage to LaRana Pombo on January 14, 2012. He received his GED and the couple moved to Fargo in 2013 where he was employed at a local manufacturing plant. LaRana passed away on October 7, 2015. Jason returned to Cando and ill-health forced him to stay home and he was unable to work. He loved spending time with his two children, Kadence and Karson. Jason liked being outdoors, hunting, fishing, and traveling. Jason is survived by his children, Karson and Kadence Harland; his father, Terry Harland; brothers, Patrick Harland and Rico Harland; niece, Autumn; and nephew, Garret. He was preceded in death by his wife, LaRana and his grandparents. Myrna Greenwood, age 80 of Grafton, ND passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2020 at Unity Medical Center of Grafton. She was born September 30, 1940 in Langdon, ND to the late Francis and Burness (Henderson) Larson. She was raised in the Calvin area and graduated from Calvin High School. Myrna attended Mercy School of Nursing in Valley City, ND graduating with her Registered Nursing degree. Myrna married James Greenwood on August 5, 1961 in Devils Lake and they made their home in Grafton. Myrna worked at the Grafton Clinic and Unity Hospital, but retired from nursing serving homecare and hospice families. She was a recipient of 50+ years of nursing award. Myrna continued her nurturing and caretaking into retirement by volunteering at Lutheran Sunset Home, the Walsh County Food Pantry, Unity Hospital Auxiliary, and St. John’s Catholic Church. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and American Legion Auxiliary. Her favorite role was grandma and great grandma, which she took incredible pride in. Myrna was known for her baking, especially lefse, and loved to quilt and sew. Myrna is survived by her children: Jaymes Greenwood, Cass Lake, MN and Jacqueline (Kit) Midgarden, Hoople, ND; grandchildren: Rebecca (Adam) Chyle, Mason City, IA; Bryan (Ashley) Midgarden, Hoople, ND; and Brenna (Michael) Bigwood, Fargo, ND: great grandchildren: Jackson and Clara Chyle. Janet Eileen Watson, 83, of Cavalier, ND passed away Saturday, October 3, 2020 at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier, ND. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at the Peter’s Cemetery, rural Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 6th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Cavalier Baptist Church, Cavalier, ND. Social distancing and masks are recommended. Janet Eileen Werven was born October 26, 1936 at Backoo, ND to Matt and Mae (Martineau) Werven. She grew up in the Backoo area, where she attended school. Jan later moved to the state of Washington and married Dean Quinnett on August 12, 1963 at Burien, WA. They made their home in Washington where Jan ran a day care and was a foster parent. In 1974, they moved to Neche, ND where she continued to be a foster parent until 1977. While in Neche, she started a Christian Theater Company called Gospel Theatre. After Dean's passing, Jan moved to Cavalier. On May 5, 2001, she married Glenn Watson. She enjoyed all kinds of crafts, operating Gramie’s Attic in Cavalier, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include her husband, Glenn Watson; children: Dean (Terri) Quinnett, Kent, WA, Doug Johnson, Medora, ND, Terry (Jodi) Johnson, Auburn, WA, Guy Quinnett, Burien, WA, Dee Quinnett and Patty Quinnett both of Cavalier, ND. Her grandchildren: Joey (Russell) and Paul; Eugene and Garrett; Chad (Katrina) and Janna (Justin); great-grandchildren: Julia and Darlyn; Gavin, Sarah ,Brogan, Garrett Jr and Elaina; Lucas, Evan, Tyler, Eva, Maelle, and Maddy; seven great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings: Donald Werven, Matt (Janet) Werven, Gordon (Linda) Werven, Evelyn Swift, Luella Latozke, Betty Hanson, and Lorraine Martinson. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Dean Quinnett; siblings: Maurice and Lawrence Werven and Mae Dahl. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations sent to Diva Dogs Racing to continue Jan's support of her great granddaughter, Eva, and her goal of running the Jr. Iditarod. Jan was one of Eva's biggest supporters and she always wanted to watch Eva achieve her dream. |
